Back Before Larry Burned His First Effigy....
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 3:30 PMThe newspaper article above was from my senior year and the "picnic" it mentions was in actuality a 13 keg free-for-all-non-school-sanctioned Senior Day party organized by myself and 3 of my girlfriends. Hundreds of people showed up including the local bikers who used the oval drive around the center of the park as a short course flat track for racing. The girls and I collected the money for the kegs, bought the kegs, got the permits for the use of the property and spent the night so we could clean the park the next day. Clean it we did..... all of our trash and any trash we could find left before our party.
This was not the only "event" I participated in either in an organizational manner or as an attendee.... there were the X-mas Tree burning parties and the Loggerhead events. Loggerhead was an extravaganza - pyrotechnics, stages & bands, hallucinogens and costumes because it was always in October. And all of these were 1982 or earlier.... and for the most part, all of the 10 Principles of BM could have been applied to them.
Ah, those were the days.... anyway, I thought the little blurb was kinda funny.....

long beach, mississippi: where area bikers show up at high school keg parties to meet chicks!
"leave no trace" was pretty much the polar opposite of our high school drinking ethic. we deliberately left piles and piles of empty beer cans in stacks in this parking lot where we got drunk every friday and saturday night. and we knew that we were being slobs and we knew that we were forcing someone else to clean up our mess and we knew that it was only increasing the likelihood of getting punished for not just the littering but the (obvious) underage drinking. talk about rebels without a cause! we were pretty much rebels without a clue. if it was a bad idea, it sounded appealing to most of the people i considered friends. then, rather ironically, as soon as i got on dead tour, i adopted the "leave only footprints" deadhead philosophy. |

Uh, yeah, so like at least 2 of the bikers were/are cousins of mine. Not sure if they are still alive or not, but I assure you, I never dated either. In fact, we weren't even "kissin' cousins."
Amazingly enough, we were also rebels without too much of a clue, but we did clean up after ourselves. When we threw bonfire parties on the beach, we were out there the next day shoveling the ashes and picking up any nails, glass or trash we left. And we always cleaned up ALL the trash; not just the stuff we created. Same for our trips to Wolf River... we had bottle rocket wars out there, but adfterwards, you'd be hard pressed to find any spent rocket sticks anywhere. Oh, and the drinking age was 18 back then, so we were not underage drinking. Now the other stuff we were doing...... |
