15,000 people marched in Honolulu - August 20 March in SF!

<div>Ku I Ka Pono March - San Francisco

AUGUST 19, 2005 - CANDLE-LIGHT VIGIL - TBA - STAY TUNED

AUGUST 20, 2005 - NOON - DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO

Where: Please spread the word! We will START U.N. PLAZA (corner of 8th/market) we will march by NINTH CIRCUIT COURT BUILDING at 95-7th St. (cross street is Mission) in San Francisco and then back to U.N. Plaza. This venue can accommodate a much larger crowd, and because of its location in the heart of San Francisco, we are more likely to garner attention.

Parking: If you're driving, there should be ample parking in the city lots on Mission and 5th St. If you plan to park on the street tie a red ribbon or put Ku I Ka Pono sign (we've alerted DPT [meter maids] to go easy on the ticketing) BART: The "Civic Center" station for BART and Muni will get you to Market and 8th -- walk one block south toward Mission.

What: Protest march and rally in support of Kamehameha schools and all things Hawaiian. - Hula/Speeches/Pule - Organized mele/oli/hula (in the next blog all of the mele). This is not a show/performance - the mele/oli/hula are meant for unification, please don't come with your purple/pink pa`u and glitter kupe`e ;-)

Gentle but important reminder: Along those lines, I want to encourage us in advance to remember that we want to draw attention for a pono march and rally. Please keep signage to slogans such as "Education for Hawaiians," "Justice for Hawaiians," "Hawaiian Unity," and the like. We will have flyers from the Kamehameha Schools with educational information about the admissions policy to hand out to media and interested passersby. Let's make sure the judiciary (many of whom likely live in the Bay Area)have a completely positive impression of us when the full panel convenes to reconsider Doe vs. Kamehameha.

What to Wear: Red/Black clothing (kihei/pareo/shirt etc..), bring banners/signs (no racist comments please), there will be "Ku i Ka Pono" shirts for purchase $10-15 (limited supply).</div>

History of Kamehameha Schools &amp; Pauahi

    </a>
										<div>The Legacy of a Princess
With extraordinary foresight, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, great-granddaughter and last royal descendant of Kamehameha the Great founded Kamehameha Schools.

Princess Pauahi had witnessed the growing influence and domination of foreigners and the physical and social decline of her people. During her lifetime she had seen Hawai&amp;rsquo;i&amp;rsquo;s native population decline from 400,000 at the time of Hawai`i&amp;rsquo;s European discovery to fewer than 45,000 people in 1878. Believing that education was the only force which could reverse the hopelessness of her people, three years after the 1880 census, Princess Pauahi created her Will as an instrument for change; among the seventeen articles related to her wishes after her death, one article, the thirteenth, contained instructions to create and maintain The Kamehameha Schools.

The Thirteenth Article specified:
I give, devise and bequeath all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate real and personal, wherever situated unto the trustees below named, their heirs and assigns forever, to hold upon the following trusts, namely:

"To erect and maintain in the Hawaiian Islands two schools, each for boarding and day scholars, one for boys and one for girls, to be known as, and called the Kamehameha Schools."

"I direct my trustees to expend such amount as they may deem best, not to exceed however one-half of the funds which may come into their hands, in the purchase of suitable premises, the erection of school buildings and in furnishing the same with necessary and appropriate fixtures, furniture and apparatus.

I direct my trustees to invest the remainder of my estate in such manner as they may think best, and to expend the annual income in the maintenance of said schools; meaning thereby the salaries of teachers, the repairing buildings and other incidental expenses; and to devote a portion of each years income to the support and education of orphans, and others in indigent circumstances, giving the preference to Hawaiians of pure or part aboriginal blood

Pauahi&amp;rsquo;s intent:

The Kamehameha School for Boys opened on November 4, 1887. In a speech delivered at the first Founder&amp;rsquo;s Day ceremony the following month, Charles Reed Bishop, Pauahi&amp;rsquo;s husband and a member of Kamehameha&amp;rsquo;s first Board of Trustees, elaborated on her intentions.

Bernice Pauahi Bishop, by founding the Kamehameha Schools, intended to establish institutions which should be of lasting benefit to her country &amp;hellip;'. Her heart was heavy when she saw the rapid diminution of the Hawaiian people going on decade after decade and felt it was largely the result of their ignorance &amp;hellip;'.

The hope that there would come a turning point, when, through enlightenment, the adoption of regular habits and Christian ways of living, the native would not only hold their numbers, but would increase again &amp;hellip;'. And so, in order that her own people might have the opportunity for fitting themselves for such competition &amp;hellip;' these schools were provided for, in which Hawaiians have the preference, and which she hoped they would value and take advantage of as fully as possible.&amp;#8221;
