Wheel of Fortune (1870) by Sir Edward Burne Jones
I saw this piece at the Burne-Jones exhibit at the Met in NYC in the late 90s and it quite simply took my breath away. This painting is very likely 15 to 20 ft. tall and pehaps 10 ft. wide. It's massive when considering the subject matter. It depicts the fatalistic point of view of 'man' being forever bound to the Wheel of Fortune, that which Lady Fortune, or The Fates have meted out to us. Life is the wheel upon which we are forever turning and eternally powerless. A grim notion indeed, yet stunningly rendered.
