Mahuika:Creations born of Fire
A the suge of spirit comes through me,I bring it into material form.
Felting is one of the worlds oldest manipulated fiber techniques.
The Charm of the felting process is that it is all_ways open to discovery.
I begin at the beginning with wool shorn from my friends happy Sheep.The wool is dyed with a mixture of natural dyesfrom the plant world and chemical dyes, bringing an spectrum of colour to the fibres.
Next the wool is carded and then it is time to be layed out to produce the fabric.
I use a technique known as the Asianic method of Rolling,as my work is greatly inspired by traditional mogolian techniques.
I make layers of wool on top of each other with the fibres going in opposing directions.Then it is layed on a cane mat(like a giant sushi rolling mat) I pour hot water and soap onto the wool and roll the mat.The hot water,soap and agitation shrink and matt the fibres togther to produce a fabric that is filled with texture,duriable, breathable and strong.The fabric is then hung in the sun to dry,until it is time too take its next from of creation.
The felt is cut and sewed and brought into a world where it is an art form beautiful and practical.
Blending materials,adourned felt with leather,fur,horse hair,needle felt emballishments,paua shell,pounamu,beads and feathers.
Each creation is born into this world through my humble hands it has become a ceremony of life and a artistic exspression that has aspirations to touch all four directions of the globe.
