Kate is an absolutely beautiful dancer and person! (Not to mention, very intelligent!)
I consider it such a honor to have had the chance to get to know her, dance with her, and learn from her.

I taught my last set of classes for this session on Thursday. Everyone seemed surprised that we were going to wait until after the holidays to start another session but seriously, rain kept people away, I can't imagine what the holidays would do ...

Last week I started teaching specific rhythms to the beginning class. For a travelling warmup, we walked around the room on the bass beats of a masmoudi rhythm only. Everyone could do it, but the folks who are newer to dance found it somewhat ch...

Another good class last night.
Beginning
* moving warmup: walking around the room using the things we learned last week. Seven step-touches, then two hip bounces on the 8 count. I encouraged the more advanced dancers to add a hip bump accent o...

I taught my first classes on Whidbey last Thursday and I thought I should make some notes so I can remember what we did.
Both classes were a good size, which made me very happy. We could add a few more people since the space is pretty open,...

about me
I've been studying Mid-Eastern dance since 1985, and have been a part of Xanadu Studio since 1994. Right now I'm trying to do everything I can to become a more informed, creative, aware performer.
I'm trying to learn from as many dancers as I can. To that end, I've taken workshops with: Suhaila Salimpour, Elena Lentini, Dahlena, Rachel Brice, Tarik Sultan, Morocco, Jim Boz, Hadia, Aziza -- and let's not forget Sohail Kaspar, Issam Houshan, and Mary Ellen Donald.
I taught my last set of classes for this session on Thursday. Everyone seemed surprised that we were going to wait until after the holidays to start another session but seriously, rain kept people away, I can't imagine what the holidays would do to attendance. I asked everyone to get the word out and bring their friends, and everyone said they would and that they were excited about a new session...we'll see if it pans out.
I was lucky enough that the rain stopped long enough for me to ge...

Last week I started teaching specific rhythms to the beginning class. For a travelling warmup, we walked around the room on the bass beats of a masmoudi rhythm only. Everyone could do it, but the folks who are newer to dance found it somewhat challenging -- they were essentially taking three steps, holding the weight on that foot, then taking another, slow, dragging step, and controlling the weight shift that way takes a lot of muscle and awareness. After the standing warmup, I introduced ...

Rather than learning a cookie-cutter choreography or isolated drills, in this workshop we will discover techniques to build layers of interest into your dance. These methods can add nuance and expression to both improvisational and choreographed performances.
$35 pre-registered (must be postmarked by 11/29)
$40 at door

Another good class last night.
Beginning
* moving warmup: walking around the room using the things we learned last week. Seven step-touches, then two hip bounces on the 8 count. I encouraged the more advanced dancers to add a hip bump accent on the touch.
* standard standing warmup
* new material: the slow "tic-toc" shimmy with hips, and slow, accented shoulder shimmies. I asked everyone to keep working as I went around the room to offer corrections. I think the main issue right now...

I taught my first classes on Whidbey last Thursday and I thought I should make some notes so I can remember what we did.
Both classes were a good size, which made me very happy. We could add a few more people since the space is pretty open, but I was happy with the class numbers.
For the beginning class I went around the room and had everyone introduce themselves and talk a little about themselves and their dance experience so I could try and remember everyone and gauge what I was d...
