The Downward Path to Wisdom
Just finished reading this story and am fascinated by it. I thought at the end he was simply repeating "I hate Mama" but then I realized he hates his mother more than the others because she should have protected him from all of this. In a way it reminded me of Hans Baumgartner in Ship of Fools. His parents protect him from everything except what he really needs protection from--all the evil in the world (i.e. the evil twins). Does anybody else out there have any ideas about this story? What does the title mean and how does it fit the action or theme of the story?
