<div>Hey there peoples!

Yay I'm working Casa for the first time and I find myself in need of a ride to Casa most of the weekends. I'm in Berkeley but willing to bart if it makes pick up easier... I can give some gas money and share in the driving. I don't have a lot of stuff so I shouldn't take up too much space. Please PM me if you find yourself available for carpooling. Thanks so much =D

Once again, The Washington Post has published the winning submissions to its yearly neologism contest, in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings for common words.

        The winners are:

        1. Coffee (n.), the person upon whom one coughs.

        16. Circumvent (n.), an opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.

The Washington Post's Style Invitational also asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition.

        Here are this year's winners:

        14. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

Afrikan Chronicles I

Hi!
Well I'm here and finally feeling myself. It was a rough beginning starting with our uncomfortable and freezing cold trip from SFO to Atlanta then food poisoned on the plane from Dakar to Johannesburg. So I spent my very first hours and days in South Africa sick!
Alas the weather is beautiful absolutely beautiful! Wednesday was Zu's birthday and we went to lunch in "Little Switzerland" a timeshare resort in the mountains of the Provence (state) of KwaZulu Natal, where you can see baboons while driving on the road (we did not, heat of the day). They call it Little Switzerland because in the winter the SNOW makes the buildings look like Swiss Chalets, although they are very African thatched roofs villas!
We were however at the mercy of his brother for what was supposed to be a 2-3 hour car ride turned into an 8hr excursion. I have gotten to see some of what I feel and refer to as "real Africa". The HUGE township of QwaQwa (1 million easy) living on a beautiful hillside (imagine plateaus similar to those in Arizona only very small, and a lot more green) with the people living in tiny, corrugated metal, matchbox houses where rocks hold down their roofs; no electricity or septic systems; dirt roads with garbage everywhere and cows openly roaming and wood smoke wafting through the air. Most of these people are uneducated, unemployed and the average child and adult are HIV positive. The view I beheld was so surreal and all that is 15-30 mins away from Zu's brothers home. The sky has a perpetual haze from all the wood burning and when your in the mountains as we were at one point you can see in the distance the shiny wave in the mountain side which is the township.
Harrismith on the other hand is a dirty and dangerous place where most of the homes have gates and/or razor wire, and all the business have barred gates. Everything closes at 5 and you don't go out at night.
Mostly I've spent a great deal of time in our room reading while listening to the birds. I tell you hearing all the bird sounds is truly like being in a bird store, It's amazing. The view outside our huge windows is of the neighbors trees and plateaus in the distance. Quite pretty.
I hope everyone is well. I'll keep ya'll updated
--
Sincerely
Kristina

Afrikan Chronicles II
Hello all

Well it's certainly been an interesting trip and this Sat the 17th we
fly from Cape Town to Johannesburg and then on to the US and only Zü and I will be flying home. His 2 kids are staying on to work for a stunt agency working on a movie for the next 2 months! We've been here nearly a month and on one hand I'm not nearly ready to leave, there so much I've not gotten to see and/or do and on the other I'm ready to be home in my own bed snuggling with my Catchildren.

I last left you in Harrismith. Well Thursday the 25th Zü's kids arrived. Sunday the 28th was the celebration for Zita at the ranch in
the Drakensberg Mountains. A Huge and incredibly beautiful ranch nestled against the Drakensberg mountains. Shortly after we arrived 6 of us hiked to what they call split rock and I'm sure you can figure out why they call it that!! Besides the huge split rock it had bushman paintings on it. Really neat! We hiked back, had a great Vegetarian lunch, chatted and enjoyed the day. At the end of the day we were invited to go help round up the sheep and then the cattle. It wasn't nearly as exciting as it sounds for both the sheep and cattle were at their respective gates waiting to be let through. But then past where the cattle were we continued on for yet another 30 min hike up a different part of the mountain to a very pretty area specially with the sun setting.

Cape Town, Jan 30th, what a contrast to Harrismith! Imagine beautiful Aqua blue waters and clean, white sandy beaches, against the back drop of Green Mountains. Gorgeous! The city it's self is quite large but seems mostly well maintained and clean. We've been staying with Zü's mom Zita, in Eagles Nest, Valley Cottage, Constantia, a suburb of Cape Town in the mountains. Beautiful! The view in her front yard is mountain forest, vineyards, a small, green horse pasture and a stream. Zita also has quite an extensive garden planted by her. Here the butterflies and bees, squirrels and mice dance and mingle to the music of birds singing everywhere, and crickets and beetles provide a constant orchestral background. At night it's downright loud! And on real windy days it sounds like we're on the beach the way the wind blows down through the trees and vineyard. It's so peaceful and beautiful here, I wish you could all see and experience this with me.

Our first 2 days we drove around a lot going to Zü's old neighborhoods and driving along the coastline. We had a near death experience courtesy of Zita and her driving! We haven't had her drive since, laughing!

Saturday we spent most of the day at the waterfront/marina browsing stores and enjoying the weather. That evening we went up Table Mountain in a gondola that had a rotating floor. We had a great view of Cape Town and Robben Island, the place where Mandela was held Prisoner for so many years.
Sunday we spent the morning at Boulder beach which is also a Penguin Reserve! There were penguins everywhere and they were very accustomed to people as they hardly moved out of the way when you walked around. (kinda like my cats! lol)
Oh and the smell was horrendous think of a giant latrine! The sand was mostly nice and clean but all the rocks were covered white. Apparently it used to be a nice small penguin colony, but now it's huge and getting out of hand and the penguins are venturing to the residential areas and some of the residents think it's cute and are feeding them and so if doors are open people are sometimes finding uninvited tuxedo clad visitors in their homes. They are also getting killed and causing car accidents as they cross the road. These are rather large penguins so hitting one wouldn't be nice. Oh and the Penguins are called Jackass Penguins because there calls sound like a Donkeys Bray.

Sincerely
Kristina

Afrikan Chronicles III
Tuesday we went to Two Oceans Aquarium. Wow what a fabulous aquarium! They had some great exhibits! I love Seahorses and they had a nice small exhibit of the endangered Knysna Lagoon Seahorse, and these guys were really cool to watch. Some of them were really active and hunting shrimp! It was hysterical to watch the Sea Horse propel itself with a tiny Dorsal Fin close to a few shrimp, curl its tail around something for anchorage and then rock till it got close enough to suck one through its snout. Brilliant little creatures! Also there were Giant Spider Crabs and when I say giant I mean 3-4ft big at least! They also had a new born Nurse Shark with momma.

Thursday we drove to Sedgefield outside Knysna. This, in Zü's mind had always been the most beautiful part of the world. Zu showed us around and told us some stories and it is undeniably beautiful.

Friday was my day, we spent it at the Cango Wildlife Ranch where The Cheetah Conservation Foundation is. It is a small Zoo with interactive opportunities like cage diving with Crocodiles, petting Cheetahs and Lions, or holding giant snakes. Did you know a Cheetah is the ONLY big cat to purr?! I can tell you I found it a little unnerving at first while I was petting 2 of the big cats! One could also think that a Cheetah or Lion would be soft to touch, but quite the contrary! Their fur is very coarse and the Lion's is even more so. I pet 2 adult
Cheetahs and 2 baby White Lions! And by baby I really mean 9 and 12(?) months, pony sized and 2 or 3 hundred pounds big cats! I could so fall in love with these animals. I think I could really work at a zoo,
animal conservation group ect...

Saturday we went to Monkeyland. It is the world's first multi-species
free-roaming primate sanctuary. It is a place dedicated to the
rehabilitation of rescued Monkeys, Apes and Lemurs that had been
confined cages and/or abused. We went on a 1hr guided tour through
the monkey forest and saw a lot of Primates. Can I say baby Lemurs and Squirrel Monkeys hanging onto mommas back are sooooo cute! The Sanctuary has only been open for a year or so and they're doing really well. Then I went to the Birds of Eden Sanctuary next door which is the largest single free flight bird Aviary in the world. Previously caged birds from all over the world live here in free flight. It is very beautiful with an indigenous forest, a river and waterfall and birds everywhere. There are at least 150 to 200 birds. As we neared the end of our walk, we met a Bare-eyed Cockatoo who said hello and asked us how we were, then a very sweet little parrot landed on my shoulder and kept saying copycat copycat in my ear as well as kissy sounds and other cute little noises. Do you know that even birds can have an accent?! This was most definitely an Afrikaner Parrot!! LOL

Sunday we spent the day driving back to Cape Town and visited a few towns on the way

Since then we have mostly spent our time at Eagles Nest, Valley
Cottage, Constantia.

The closer it gets to our leaving the more anxious I find myself. I want to be home and done with this trip cause I am really in need of a good vacation!! It's NOT easy vacationing with 2 kids even if they're mostly adults! For someone who is NOT a mom, does not want to be a mom or even a step-mom I have been put in that role?! And it's really a pain feeding and cleaning and what-not with this family! All the indecision and crankiness when hungry and their slobs and and and I could go on forever… But I have also really enjoyed their company. We have had some fun times playing cards or Yahtzee and/or just being silly. I wish them the best and am envious of their staying for two more months.

When I get home I'll definitely post pictures. Hope life is going well for everyone in the USA. I look forward to coming home soon.
--
Sincerely
Kristina

Almost on the way home:
So today was a great day. Of course the weather has NOT been very summery most the time we've been here but today was an absolutely beautiful hot sunny day! (figures when we are leaving the country the next day!!!) Anyway we went to Butterfly World in the Cape Winelands and looked at lots of Butterflies and Butterfly Chrysalis! We saw newborn butterflies all wet and wrinkly with huge bodies and little wings. We saw a newborn butterfly's first flight. We saw a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and a bunch yet to complete the metamorphic stage. Also next to the butterflies is an Aviary with a few birds and an Insectarium. We saw at least half a dozen different kinds of creepy hairy Tarantulas, 3 snakes and some other big and very scary spiders. Afterward we went and had lunch at a wonderful Indian restaurant shopped and drove back to Cape Town. We are now packed and all ready to leave in the am. I wish it was over and done with.
Saturday we will fly from Cape Town to Johannesburg at 7:00 am spend the day at the airport and at 7:30pm we fly out of Johannesburg to Dakar, Senegal (where I'll not eat the food from the plane as this is where I got food poisoned on the way in!!) and then on to Atlanta, Georgia and finally to San Francisco, California arriving at 1:15pm on Sunday. I can barley contain my excitement at sleeping in our bed and seeing my kitties. (There was a small issue with the "nice" sitter we had staying with my cats and she bailed out on us leaving my 2 cats one being diabetic with no insulin or food for 24 hours?!)) So I'm most anxious to see that they are well.
Hugs to all!!
Sincerely

    </a>
										<div>Hi everyone

Love
Kris</div>

    </a>
<div>Zu and me went to the Green Festival Sat and Sun and last night and today as I'm sorting through all the stuff we brought home being information, coupons and samples of products and I'm amazed at how much I've learned, changed and grown. I have to say that I owe Zu my gratitude for allowing me to really open my eyes and explore this more conscious side of me.
I love to read my VegNews and Alt Health Magazines and spend hours researching about the fluoride in our water and how it's really toxic or about the toxic chemical Phthalates which is in plastic water bottles and cosmetics or my favorite right now Teflon!! Ewww!!
These are some of the things that fulfill my time...
So then we go to a festival where I can listen to speakers and be amongst people that have an awareness for our Mother Earth and that want to do better by here and themselves and I am overwhelmed with a sense of awe and I want to be and do better but where to start is the hard part. So here's what I do to start.
1) I recycle as much as I can down to toilet paper rolls and the plastic tip coverings of the syringes I use.
2) I compost as much as I can. I live where I can help in the making of rich healthy soil.
3) I try to only use products that won't harm the environment be it shampoo, toilet cleaner or bug killer.
4) Not only do I aspire to do and be better but I do.</div>

    </a>
<div>I know you all think you've read this before but this is a real sign of the times, read on!!!! LOL

Love~K

IF you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill BOTH ways through year 'round blizzards.

Carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse, where they maintained a Straight-A average, despite their full-time, after-school job at the local textile mill ... where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that...

I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia!

And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!

There was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!

There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ'd usually talk over the beginning and messed it all up!

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Play station video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like "Space Invaders" and "Asteroids" and the graphics sucked ! Your guy was a little square!

You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens; it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! ... Just like LIFE!

When you went to the movie theater there no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!

Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little bastards!

And we didn't have microwaves; if we wanted to heat something up ... we had to use the stove or go build a frigging fire. Imagine that!

If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid Jiffy Pop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot. That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled.

You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!</div>

Skinny models banned from catwalk
POSTED: 10:57 a.m. EDT, September 13, 2006

MADRID, Spain (Reuters) -- The world's first ban on overly thin models at a top-level fashion show in Madrid has caused outrage among modeling agencies and raised the prospect of restrictions at other venues.

Madrid's fashion week has turned away underweight models after protests that girls and young women were trying to copy their rail-thin looks and developing eating disorders.

Organizers say they want to project an image of beauty and health, rather than a waif-like, or heroin chic look.

But Cathy Gould, of New York's Elite modeling agency, said the fashion industry was being used as a scapegoat for illnesses like anorexia and bulimia.

"I think its outrageous, I understand they want to set this tone of healthy beautiful women, but what about discrimination against the model and what about the freedom of the designer," said Gould, Elite's North America director, adding that the move could harm careers of naturally "gazelle-like" models.

Madrid's regional government, which sponsors the show and imposed restrictions, said it did not blame designers and models for anorexia. It said the fashion industry had a responsibility to portray healthy body images.

"Fashion is a mirror and many teenagers imitate what they see on the catwalk," said regional official Concha Guerra.

The mayor of Milan, Italy, Letizia Moratti, told an Italian newspaper this week she would seek a similar ban for her city's show unless it could find a solution to "sick" looking models.

Quality, not size
The Madrid show is using the body mass index or BMI -- based on weight and height -- to measure models. It has turned away 30 percent of women who took part in the previous event. Medics will be on hand at the September 18-22 show to check models.

"The restrictions could be quite a shock to the fashion world at the beginning, but I'm sure it's important as far as health is concerned," said Leonor Perez Pita, director of Madrid's show, also known as the Pasarela Cibeles.

A spokeswoman for the Association of Fashion Designers of Spain, which represents those at Madrid fashion week, said the group supported restrictions and its concern was the quality of collections, not the size of models.

Eating disorder activists said many Spanish model agencies and designers oppose the ban and they had doubts whether the new rules would be followed.

"If they don't go along with it the next step is to seek legislation, just like with tobacco," said Carmen Gonzalez of Spain's Association in Defense of Attention for Anorexia and Bulimia, which has campaigned for restrictions since the 1990s. </div>

    </a>
<div>I'd like to start going to a gym again.
Where is there a good place relatively close IE Berkeley, Emeryville or even Oakland on this side of Berkeley?
Also Money is always an issue so no frou frou expensive gyms.
I used to go to and loved 24hr gym in concord on Willow Pass but then they closed and moved to the mall, all though I had stopped going before then. Unemployment happened...
I loved the gym because they had good machines all in working order and plenty of them to use at least during the hours I went, they had trainers, and several other things like swimming and I think yoga and aerobics in an upstairs room.
I paid a trainer to teach me Pilate's and Core training which I loved, even though it kicked my ass 2times a week. The other 3 days were my regularly scheduled circuit training. I always spent a minimum of an hour and sometimes, often 2 hours.
In the beginning I went with a partner and it was great then things changed and I started to go on my own and that worked for me as well. Hopefully if I find a compatible Gym I can summon up the courage to start out going alone and keep up the discipline required for this all by myself...</div>
