My Testimonials

April 11, 2005
Katya is an amazing bellydancer as well as an inspiring teacher. Her art for "feeling" the music is definitely reflected in her dancing. She is truly talented and inspiring, she's a wonderful person and a great friend to have!!!

Re: Dina 1990 (in Dina, Egyptian Belly Dance Star) I love that she's using a veil! I've never seen her dance with one before! Plus, even she had to wear a midriff covering back then; interesting!!! She wears the hell out of it, though, doesn't mute her beauty one bit!!!

Re: Dina (very young)-Mellaya Leff (in Dina, Egyptian Belly Dance Star) OMG, the best Melaya I have ever seen! What subtlety, what grace!! You just can't teach that, you're born with it.

Where did you get this video? I would love to see the whole thing!

Yes, I know I've been absent for awhile here, but it's been for a good reason! I just finished my first semester of grad school, and I did very well! I ended up loving my ethnomusicology transcription and analysis course after all! Once I was able to apply what I was learning to the music that I'm interested in, I saw things that I would've never seen if I hadn't done that work. So, it's been a very enlightening semester!

I just got some new photos taken! Take a peek, and let me kno... read more

Salaam has hired me to direct the dancing for the Gala this year! It's nice to work with them again :) I've posted a pic above from the very first Gala we did back in '99; hard to believe that was eight years ago!

Our concert is now posted to the Waldron Arts Center website:

www.artlives.org/things_to...eries.html

There are a few additions:

-Salaam, a Middle Eastern band, from Bloomington, IN will perform with a few soloists, myself included, live improv!

-Ozan, a Turkish male folkdancer, will perform; he is a fellow graduate student of mine in the Folklore/Ethnomusicology Dept. here at Indiana University

I hope to see as many of you as possible next April 4-5!

This is wonderful, a new book on Belly Dance in Academia!!! Probably a good read, too, as Anthony Shay is a part of it; I just love reading his stuff. He's so witty and insightful.

It's called, "Bellydance: Orientalism, Transnationalism, and Harem Fantasy". You can purchase it at the publisher's website:

www.mazdapub.com/BookDetails.aspx

I will definitely use this book in my graduate studies next year! It's hard to find things specifically about Oriental Dance. ... read more
