"The Image Eternal" by Ruth St. Denis

   Sun, November 20, 2005 - 6:02 AM
I woke up this morning and thought of a quote by Miss Ruth that I wanted to find, and in searching for it (I didn't find it) I found this in the same book, "Wisdom Comes Dancing: Selected Writings of Ruth St. Denis on Dance, Spirituality, and the Body":

The Image Eternal

Oh, Lovers of the dance,
And you who worship music,
And living forms of sculpture
Or the painter's skill in art,
Cease with me an instant
From your labors in the studio,
In theater or in concert hall,
And let us listen for an interval
To the Eternal Music,
And inwardly behold the Perfect Image.
And then let us begin to move
To the silent drum beats
Of the Perfect Dance.

Persian Miniatures
I am OBSESSED with them!! Here's where I get mine:

www.persianpaintings.com/miniat2.html

Prof. Anthony Shay has done research into these to try to find out how women danced in those days, but alas he found that they only show about 3-4 different poses...hardly enough to reconstruct a dance. However, what I find intriguing in them are the stories they tell. We will NEVER know how women danced in those days, because no one is alive from then! BUT, we can look to ancient literature to tell us the stories of their lives, and the myths behind them.

I have a fantasy of creating a concert of different Persian Miniature images; taking four or five and telling the story behind them through dance. Wouldn't that be cool?? It would have to be a combination of Persian and Arabic movement, as really that's how Oriental dance was created!!!

BTW, this picture here is me...lol...my daughter saw this when she was about 18 mos. and she said, "Mama!" LOL...I printed it with others onto a magnet sheet and cut them out for her to play with :) Kids need to be exposed to real art at a young age, not just "children's" stuff!
