little teaching breakthroughs

If you've been through any kind of intensive with Carolena, you've probably heard/seen her "how dance & drum came together on the street" story of the 3/4 shimmy. It sounds so easy, right? And yet tons of students struggle with the step, even as they advance beyond the basics in other areas.

A few weeks ago, in our fundamentals class, instead of even mentioning the mechanics, I just told what I remember of that story and walked around with them. And lo! If you don't know anything about the whole right-neutral-right-weight-shift thing, and are just being bouncy and womanly... it IS easy. They all got it in roughly 90 seconds. Because? Carolena is a genius.

Also, our students are awesome. That might be a contributing factor! We've been having these tiny classes of committed people, and while that does make paying the studio rent a bit harder, it makes showing up to teach so much more exciting. Now, to figure out how to have big classes of committed people. Without leaving town. *grin*

wow, it took me a couple of years to master the 3/4 shimmy, now it is my favorite thing (like i could NOT do it if I tried... LOL).. on the up, on the down, twisting fwd, twisting back, with shoulders, with drops, its the most awesomest natural feeling move ever! any way that makes learning it easier, I'm all for!! Congrats!

Zuleika - Yes, totally! I don't think I'd want to cover 3/4 shimmy (which really is a fundamental that you need for a lot of the more complex ATS steps) without the story now that I've seen it work so well.

I love a 3/4 shimmy done well... Saahira, your's ROCKS. Mine, uh, not so much. I just never "get" it for more than a minute or so.
