Matthue Roth is an old friend of mine. We used to room together in the Mission and became pretty close. He wrote a great book called "Yom Kippur a Go-Go", and there are some fun references to our friendship in there and some characters that resemble me (and K). It was strange and nifty to read. "We hire people from "Chemlawn" because green grass is somehow preferable to clean water or not having cancer. We leave the lights on in office buildings overnight just to show that the building is still standing. We "need" new clothes every spring and fall, regardless that our closets are full to bursting with perfectly wearable clothes. We pay $100 each for football tickets and say "what a shame" about Darfur. We're pigs. And, for the most part, entirely ungrateful for what we have; even totally unaware of our riches."
