The Running Commentary in My Head
YAY!
Tue, November 14, 2006 - 11:58 PMI loved it, for about a year, when it started acting up. So, I used my warranty and yelled and bullied and got a maintenance person out and by the time it was 18 months old, it was deemed a loss and I was told to cut the cord to send back to the company and trash the rest of the machine (which I lugged downstairs and simply tossed into the apartment trash bin).
After another few months of trading phone calls and insults with the warranty people, I got a partial refund because of the warranty. Great. Look into other dishwashers and Danby is still the best rated and it's still the one that fits best in my apartment. Besides, it's cute and I really like it when it works. So, I take that money that that warranty company eventually sends me (I had to write a letter to the Better Business Bureau before I got it) and find that Target has this same Danby Dishwasher at a cheaper price, AND they have a better extended warranty system. So, I buy that Danby, and I love it great and do my best to take extra better care of it in case it was my fault that the last one broke. Well, less than a year later, it decides it's tired (I only run it 2-3 times a week). So, I put off the inevitable for a few weeks, but eventually, I contact Target's warranty department and begin the song and dance about broken dishwasher and extended warranty.
And I also go back to doing dishes by hand. :-/
Well, Target's warranty department is a lot more civilized than the other one was. Their warranty is essentially a Target giftcard for the amount of the appliance. Well last time I heard from them they had okayed the warranty and the refund, but that was weeks ago. I have had it on my list for about two weeks to give them a call and see what's up. And today I got my Target Giftcard!
Since I have learned recently that "large" appliances are not supposed to be disposed of in garbage bins but taken to the dump and since I have no car to take said appliance to the disposal facility or dump, I spent the evening taking the thing apart and putting it in lots of little bags that I will put in the bin slowly over the next couple of weeks. It was time well, spent, I think. Not quite done yet, but gettin' there and learning a bit about the inner workings in the mean time.
Now, if the giftcard had come any other time of year, I would have used it towards the upgraded model of Danby dishwasher. But, it's November 14, and that's a brief 41 days before Christmas or about 30 days before I have to have everything mailed or UPSed out. And I am broke. So, instead of buying another beloved dishwasher right away, I'm going to invest in a few pairs of latex gloves so my hands don't start to feel like sandpaper again and Christmas this year will be on Target!
While I thank the Universe/God for this little bit of serendipity, I really want to get another dishwasher. Oh well, maybe next year. Along with a new mattress, shoes, and a new life.
But still, it's a YAY! day!
I'm tired. I need to go to bed.

I've heard about those counter-top models, but you are the first brave soul I have ever met to actaully have owned one! Glad to hear they can really clean the dishes, even if they only have a short life! Most of the older homes I have lived in didn't even have the counterspace for something like this.
I'm not a dishwash-by-hand person either. I've been known to recycle the same spoon and cup for a week if no one is around to really slap my hand about it. Many years ago, when I was living alone, I had amassed a huge pile of dished - had company over, got lazy, etc. Anyway it was so overwhelming that I called a friend who had a dishwasher and asked her if I could use hers. I packed all my dirty dishes into 2 large suitcases lined with plastic trashbags and toted them over to her house where her machine scubbed them spotless while we watched a video. ...only caveat was the odd garlic scent that lingered in one of the suitcases... |

A YAY day indeed on behalf of Christmas. Still, it's heartbreaking that you're back to handwashing. I think if I ever have to live without a dishwasher again, I will eat peanut-butter sandwiches for the rest of my life and just keep re-using the knife.

YAY
butt I think Xmas is way over rated anyway its crazy the amount of money spent on gifts not needed I have a feeling its going to be a slim Xmas from me this year as I have so much "other" stuff to pay for right now and yes, rubber gloves will save your baby soft hands |

LOL!!! Oh, Zuzu! That's a GREAT story! Yes, I frequently recycle the same coffee cup or knife or sometimes even dish. The delights of living alone! No one around to tell me to do it differently! ;-)
Christmas will be slim, but some people will be getting some "homemade" stuff (an autographed copy of a periodical that I have a poem in, for example). Others, who I know wouldn't enjoy that, I'm going to try to be unique with or thoughtful, but on a budget. Oh! And Mother is coming for Christmas. I gotta start cleaning and hiding things! |

I hate washing dishes but it does go by faster having the 4 yr old HELPING me. No i did ot force her into this i swear!!!
Teach cats to wash dishes??? We use plastic spoons and knives and forks and plates and i put them straight ntot he recycling bin unless I have company then i bring out the real stuff I could still kick my mommies butt though she let my 4 yr old do knives while she was up there for a month. Though my daughter DOES know the the ""safety" of knives We taught her by age 2 that she is not to play with them . And i live in a Bungalow in Fla i have a section of a counter other than that my kitchen is the size of a small walk in closet . |

Yeah, sometimes when I have a party I end up living on plastic utensils and paper plates afterwards and it's a lot of fun. Little to know clean up!

My friend blake got a movable one that he has a table top on so it serves as his kitchen table when not in use. When he wants to do teh dishes, takes the top off (folds in half) and rolls it up to the sink and hitches the water to the nozzle and plugs it in and voila! Dishes done like normal style. My point is if you have room for a kitchen table and if (and this is the big one) if you have the cash to buy one of these "portable" floor dishwashers, you can live with such an appliance as a reality. It's troof!

I, too, detest doing dishes.
Long ago I started buying plastic utensils and paper plates. Which in the long run is not the most economical idea, but hey, I rationalize it by the time it saves me standing at the sink. This was all good and dandy until my beloved hubby started placing his used plastic spoons into the sink to be washed. WTF?? |
