His non-ironically titled exhibition "If Walls Could Talk These Would Curse", (mixed media on paper series), will be located in the studio annex from August 5-25. A portion of the sale of his work will be donated to Little Kids Rock in Oakland, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing free musical instruments and music instruction to public school children. The exhibit will be open during the AAC's national juried exhibition, "Contemporary Abstracts", in the main gallery.
Both exhibitions are free to the public.

Opening Reception: First Friday, August 5, 6-8pm.
Artist Statement:
Phonic theE Bomber
Phonic's mixed media on paper series incorporates the use of materials largely purchased from his local community Walgreen's Drugstore or liberated from the office supply rooms of his former employers. He uses unconventional media such as “Liquid Paper”, toothpaste, packing tape, highlighters, spray paint and permanent felt tip markers to produce his work for the simple reason that these material are most commonly available environmentally. His work has been created with a complete disregard for commercial acceptance. Indeed it apparent that seeking acceptance by the “art establishment” or the garnering of critical approval has been of no concern to him in the creation of this body of work. These characteristics are consistent with the definition of "outsider art" in that he creates art purely for himself and his immediate community. The work materializes through the use of tools that are within his reach, validating the concept that the creation of art can be realized successfully with items that are readily and easily accessible to all with methods arrived at auto-didactically.
He samples and mixes elements and materials taken from his own immediate environment to create collages and pictures that typically resonate with energy and movement. It is obvious that the techniques he has picked up in the DJ world are being applied to the visual art that he creates.
A portion of the sale of his work to Little Kids Rock in Oakland, an organization in keeping with his mission of making art and music accessible to everyone. The mission of Little Kids Rock is based on the concept that music education is a transforming force in children's lives. The organization is dedicated to bringing free musical instruments and music instruction to public school children.
Biography
He was born in Manchester, England, and arrived in the United States in 1985. He entered UC Riverside as a freshman in 1986.
In 1986 he earned his FCC broadcasting license in 1986, which is still valid today. He auditioned successfully at KUCR 88.1fm, a college radio station with a signal that covered the entire Inland Empire and also much of Los Angeles County. At KUCR he hosted and formulated a popular prime time weekly 4hr music program, "King Shag's Variety Hour", for the next 5 years that featured everything from indie rock to Reggae.
In 1993 he relocated to Northern California where he co-established a DJ and sound production company called “ColliderScope”. Under this banner and also in his capacity as a founder of the pre-eminent down-tempo DJ crew, the “Magic Circle” he was responsible for organizing countless fiercely underground events and “happenings” that would routinely draw crowds ranging from two hundred to one thousand people in size over the next five years. His DJ sets were greatly influenced by his love of experimental, innovative and eclectic music and were often the high point of these events.
He also developed a successful secondary career as a club DJ using his massive personal record collection that today numbers well into the tens of thousands. He held residencies at some of the most well known club nights in San Francisco such as Club Universe, Asia SF, Club 181 and 177 Townsend. Ultimately he was selected as the official DJ for the X-Games, he has also opened for major groups such as Crystal Method and Parliament.
In 1996 John set up a new production company and web based record label called EzLuv, www.ezluv.org. He teamed up with Oakland based charity, Little Kids Rock and began promoting events characterized and informed by a love for all genre’s of music that were altruistic rather than profit oriented. The website features original music, DJ mixes, reviews, an events calendar and the bio's of the many DJ's, musicians and artists who have chosen to affiliate themselves with EzLuv over the years. The collective is one of the largest of its kind in the Bay Area and has at its heart a philosophy that emphasizes friendship and loyalty over all else.
The images found in my gallery originally came from either my cell phone camera or were appropriated from the World Wide Web. Where this is not the case I have tried to credit the source.
They are often manipulated either digitally or manually. Sometimes they are manipulated both digitally and manually.
In producing these images II am generally aiming to fulfill at least one of two objectives....
ONE
At a purely aesthetic level I try to create a psychoactive experience for the viewer by way of color selection, pattern, contrast. etc. I am influenced in this regard by the iridescent and inherently psychedelic qualities innate to materials such as mother of pearl, peacock feathers, mohair and orchids.
I will admit to "lysergic" influences too but only when artfully cornered...
You will never here me say that I took a lot of acid back in the day....that's for bloody sure! At a moral level I feel it is important to live down to ones reputation....n'est pas?
TWO
At a subjective level I try to accentuate the positive aesthetic of the images I use. For example when I use pornographic images as source material the end product is often less explicit.
I am more interested in love than lust.
I like lust an awful lot mind you...
I like to highlight the commitment, intelligence and trust necessary for the successful pursuit of hedonistic pleasure in an ethically responsible manner...
GRATUITOUS TANGENT
Above all else, I feel that it is important to live artfully whenever possible. Time and space make up our ultimate canvas. Our actions and the decisions that underly them are our most transcendent brush strokes.
Ahhhh the existential void beckons....
Make the best usage of your "God given" talents. Recognize that it is "human" though to be imperfect.
Life is a beautiful joke.
Laughing is the currency of happiness.
We are all going to die.
There are 3500 pictures in my gallery that represent a portion of my artistic output over the course of the last few years. Enjoy them and feel free to claim them as your own .... for free.
IP attorneys relinquish there credentials before entering heaven I am told, (well just "made up" to be truthful).
I am not a natural visual artist and envy those who are...
I am however prolifically average.
Transcendence is beautiful ....accidental, intentional or otherwise in my humble opinion.
Did I mention that I am the MOST modest?
The most be FAR in fact?
Admittedly I am biased towards myself mind you.
I digress...again....
In a nutshell though....
I am playing the "numbers game"....
Why?
Cos....
I can't do what ten people tell me to so ... I guess I will remain the same.
Plus it is the only option available to me...
Git down.
Thank You Otis and thank you Punk Rock.
Champagne to all my friends
Real pain to all my enemies
I love my family....

FINAL THOUGHT
Art?
The best example of visual art is all around you...
all the time...
It costs you nothing....
You can check it out right now instead of reading this drivel...
Go ahead....
Swivel your eyeballs left and right ....
Bingo there it is.....
Check it out....
Notice...
It's 3D and animated....
Constantly changing...
Totally trippy....
Lets agree to call it ....
REALITY.
What about abstract art you ask...?
You clever so and so...
Not into the photo realistic huh?
Descartes is your co-pilot perhaps...
Well go grab a q tip cos...
The ultimate abstract art is also all around you...
if you care to tune into it
Y'dig?...
It is often referred to...
in the world of Englishmen....
as MUSIC.
C'mon!
Forget cubism
and the Jungian overtones of abstract expressionism for a moment...
MUSIC is so abstract that....
It is invisible and travels through the air in the form of "waves".
It enable telepathy for heavens sake....
You know.....
The crowd goes wild at the end of the drum solo...
Collectively...
The blues sounds sad...
no matter who or where you are
no matter whether you have ever heard it before...
We can experience music together....
As ONE.
Mark E Smith once wisely reminded us...
about the "Psychic dancefloor"
so....
STEP FORWARD.
Cos we don't need no "cosmic shit"
LETS GET THIS THING TOGETHER.
disclaimer...
The above may all be completely wrong.
...If you find the history, evolution or science of "Sound Systems" and the evolving "culture" thereof to be "interesting" or "engaging".
I use this "TRIBE" as a repository for any info/pix/stories/anecdotes/factoids on this subject. In the topics section you will find mostly articles etc that I come across during the course of my day to day research in this subject area. I compliment this with some editorial scribblings of my own....if compliment is the right word.
Very heavy on content.
Not so social.

This retrospective from small indie label "Cherry Red" records bears the statement "Pay no more than 99p" on the front cover. If you find this record for anything near that price as is still possible I might add consider yourself very luck. This is probably one of the strongest single label compilations ever released. It features some of the strongest material from....
Everything But the Girl (3 tracks total...Ben Watt solo, Tracy Thorn solo and the band together), Felt, Kevin Coyne, The Nightingales, The Marine Girls (one of Curt Cobains many pet indie fave bands) and the Monochrome Set. Also thrown in are two of the funniest spoken word diatribes ever committed to vinyl. Quentin Crisp (The Naked Civil Servant) makes like Oscar Wilde and delivers "Stop the music for a minute" to close out the record. The Orb sampled this diatribe as I recall...Also Attilla the Stockbroker etches the air with his detailed observations about the tawdry lives innercity living, glue sniffing 12 yr olds.
But the coup de grace has to be Joe Crow's stunning slab of proto electro "Compulsion". So sleek, so economical and beyond melancholy this song features a single chord change over the course of its primitive synthesized life. In spite of this or maybe because of this it attains a perfection in color, tonality and feel that Depeche Mode spent an entire career aspiring towards. Indeed, as I recall Martin Gore did a note for note eerily identical cover of this track on his otherwise drab "Counterfeit" album.
A truly amazing little label and a perfectly compiled compilation, make this record (also reissued on CD) essential. Particularly if you have any interest in learning about what was going on in the indie music world of the UK circa early "80's.
FACT! - "Scientists have observed black rabbits and white rabbits frenzidly copulating together in the wild."

Visual and Jazz music artists come together to help jazz drummer, music shop owner and East Oakland neighbor, Jay Rose, 83 years old, to keep the doors open during difficult economic times after nearly 40 years in business.
An art opening and jazz reception on April 11, 2009 marks the relaunch of Acme Music in the Laurel District of Oakland. The show and relaunch of the store, organized by artist/DJ/musician Phonic Thee Bomber (aka John Middle), brings together works by himself and two other notable artists from Acme's neighborhood, Bethany Ayers and Cassandra Auker, in order to bring new life and attention to the struggling music shop.
Jazz music will be performed by the musicians and teachers at Acme, including Donald “The Duck” Bailey, Pete Cornell, Bob Edmonson, Daniel Myers, Dave Kremers and Vicky Grossi. Owner Jay Rose will also be on hand to step in on the drums.
"I first became involved with Acme Music because I was curious what is this place anyway? There's sheet music and bits and pieces of things for sale and well-known jazz musicians just hanging out with Jay and giving lessons to kids from the neighborhood," says Phonic. "It's classic, just like its name. This place is a hidden gem, a real old school neighborhood place founded on the love of music and community. Classic."
When owner Jay Rose started Acme Music in the '70s, he was working at his shop in East Oakland six days a week in a t-shirt and drumming at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco wearing a tuxedo in the evenings. Health problems have slowed his drumming down. Competition from on-line retailers and mega-stores has hurt business, as has the downturn in the economy. Then there was a devastating fire in which wiped out most of his instruments and stock and forced him to give up 2/3 of the shop space that he rents on MacArthur Boulevard in the Laurel District of Oakland.
At age 83, Rose, who opens the shop at 10 am and works until closing six days a week, remains positive, "I love music and I love people." Phonic and Rose have become good friends. "I like the idea of community, and Jay and this shop embodies that idea. Jay knows everyone. People, including famous jazz folk, come in just to hang out. There's a lot of history in this place and in the people, we can't let that magic be forgotten."
Acme sells sheet music, lesson books, instruments and accessories, and provides repair. Still, the core of his business has always been the lessons provided by talented and noted jazz musicians.
The event is free and is open to the public.

The CR Series electric upright bass, with its exceptional versatility and tone quality, is fast becoming an indispensable tool for the serious bassist. The lean, solid-body CR Series bass takes its place in a long history of fine instruments crafted in the Czech Republic.
Available in 4 and 5 stringed models, the CR Series is made from select maple and ebony. The full scale fingerboard is graduated for consistent response from note to note, with adjustable relief and bridge height to suit all playing styles. Our Polar™ bridge pickup system combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to pizzicato and arco technique. Optional EMG magnetic pickups expand the range to include classic electric bass sounds.
According to Bass Player magazine, the Czech made CR Series "boasts impeccable craftsmanship from a country with a reputation for quality upright bass building. It's clean aesthetics, excellent playability, and great sound put it ahead of the pack."
Three interchangeable support systems are available for the bass: the self supporting tripod stand, more conventional end pin stand, and shoulder strap assembly for full mobility.
Features
MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CR Series Double Bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face. The neck has a traditional upright shape, but with extended access to the upper register of the fingerboard. The solid-body body design enhances sustain and clarity, and is resistant to the effects of temperature change and humidity.
EBONY FINGERBOARD: The seasoned ebony fingerboard is hand graduated to insure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. Small dots across the neck provide accurate position markers.
POLAR BRIDGE PICKUP SYSTEM: The Polar pickups can sense either lateral or vertical string vibration - or both! Set in the lateral mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity in the direction of the bow. In the vertical mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained.
EMG MAGNETIC PICKUPS: The low-impedance EMG pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets. Each coil is buffered separately for a full sound quality with very low noise. (Magnetic pickups pare optional. Only models marked with the letter M have magnetic coils.)
ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for magnetic and piezo pickups, a toggle switch to select the mode of the Polar pickup, and individual bass EQ & treble EQ controls. The 18 volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics.
ADJUSTABLE BRIDGE: Two screws in the back of the body are used to adjust the bridge up and down. This allows the instrument to be set up to meet the requirements of many different playing styles.
THREE STAND OPTIONS:
1. Tripod Stand - Supplied as standard equipment, the Tripod Stand provides stable support, with full height and tilt adjustment. The stand folds down to fit in the gig bag.
2. End Pin Stand - An optional End Pin Stand offers the upright bassist a more traditional position, similar to that of an acoustic instrument.
3. Shoulder Strap System - A light frame structure is supported by a single guitar style strap extending over the left shoulder. This holds the bass in the correct position for both pizz and arco styles. The Strap System offers full mobility and amazing comfort.
PORTABILITY: The padded tubular gig bag is only 137 cm (54") long and 18 cm (7") in diameter, and weighs 8.2 kg (18 lbs) with the instrument and stand. A storage area inside the gig bag has room for accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft. An optional flight case measures 145 x 25 x 25 cm (57" x 10" x 10").

CONVERSATION on the subject of THE FALL
A bit of back and forth on the subject of Mark E Smith
Yesterday at 08:22
Hi All,
My Friend John Middle recently wrote...after a scathing attack from me on the subject of the wanker that is Mark E Smith of The Fall.....The original scathing attack may be lost to the ether...but it prompted him to sit back...crack his knuckles....and spew forth the following:
Not a rebuttal .... a scuttle but ul.
Hope you are doing well Tim....
I like reading your outbursts.
You have a unique and sardonic sense of humor that makes me chuckle a lot.
My Mum is my best representative and I dispatched her to consort with you and yours as my proxy in recognition of this deep seated truth.
You are welcome.
John
My old friend Tim Ascough recently regaled me with a dense and expectorant sodden missive on the subject of his intense loathing of THE FALL. As a long time FALL fan I have been made aware of such feeling many times before by many people from many different walks of life. Particularly in the early 80's (when I was initially developing my appreciation of their music) I found myself on the receiving end of negative feedback ranging in tone from incredulous and disbelieving to hostile and annoyed upon playing THE FALL or bringing them up in conversation. Certainly I was never taken aback as THE FALL have a sound and musical angle that can only be described as difficult, abtruse, challenging, ramshackle, cacaphonic and so on ... and so on.
Mark E Smith, THE FALL's only permanent fixture at this juncture has a vocal style that de-emphasizes range and key by way of skewing more in the direction of squeaks, mumbles, hard consonants and hard-talk.
I generally assumed that I would be alone in my affinity with their din.
Back then THE FALL as a band were not considered "cool" at any level. Mark E Smith was considered an annoying but persistent fixture on the "scene" by most. The band dressed "wrong". Their Link Wray/Beefheart/Van Der Graaf Generator/Iggy Pop/CAN/FAUST/Velvet Underground/Country and "Northern" influences were over most peoples heads. They slagged off your favorite band without hesitation in the media...etc etc.
When you met folks who were into THE FALL back then you came across a certain type of music fan. 'Committed' in a word. The type of music fan who understood that great music is oftentimes only revealed as such by way of repeated listening. You have to 'earn' the privilege. FALL fans loved the 'differences' they heard....Wrong notes over right 'business as usual' notes.
THE FALL are about uncompromising vision in combination with committed creative execution. THE FALL for a huge portion of their career pursued these qualities in the face of overwhelming commercial disdain and public disinterest. Mark E Smith is certainly a known and respected cultural renegade THESE days. The dogged persistence that has characterized his 'career' in its entirety has paid off ultimately. The last 5 years have been good to him at a public level. Vindication...
Lets not forget though that THE FALL have been in business since 1977. They have completed 25 original albums. They have released 50 singles. They have issued 50 live and compilation albums. Mark was a dock worker prior to being in the band. He believes in hard graft and testicular fortitude. '' Nothing has happened since 1977 to STOP Mark from 'doing his thing'.....Of course the truth is that his experience in the biz has been rife with the typical (and at times uber-typical) challenging situations and problems. He has endured thirty years worth of such moments to state the obvious. Throughout, he has kept rolling ever onwards.
We are after all talking about the music business....SHOW BUSINESS. Mark has evidently faced down the type of 'shit' that stops most bands in their tracks by album 3 if they are lucky AND determined.
THE FALL are of Mancunian stock and represent the grit and "no mithering please" nature of the place to the core.
Personally, I am into the idea of having a strong 'work ethic', be it in music, art, sport or whatever. Hard work is tough to ignore or downplay ... It can't be "bullshitted" if you know what I mean.
It resonates.
What about the music?
Well .... you develop your craft thru repetition right? THE FALL have gone thru a lot of repetition. The craft is accordingly in good shape. Its not the typical 'craft' mind you. It is born of a contrary nature. It is about the advantages of making music while NOT being a musician.
I DON'T SING I JUST SHOUT .....ALL ON ONE NOTE....SING SING SING SING.....LOOK AT ME I JUST STING......YOUR HEART OUT.
Mark is in his 50's these days. Listen to his last three albums and see if you can pick up on a softening of his approach to creating music. NO NOSTALGIA resides therein. Instead you will find odd and unique sounds and noises. Techno synths in rockabilly shirts. Industrial grind in cod-cabaret sequins. Punk meets APHEX TWIN by way of a detour through a ROCHDALE working mans club. FOOTBALL HOOLIGAN ANTHEMS and freestyle crap-raps. His hips may have proven fragile but his ears are those of an athletic elephant, greedily filtering the RIGHT frequencies for the NEW sounds to add to the OLD new sounds.
Head music with energy.
VALUES and having an ANGLE.
No love songs.....
Mark like myself would rather read a HORROR STORY.
The Mills and Boones preoccupation of modern pop music is somewhat narrow right???? RIGHT?
What if we make the atmospheric presence of a song its HOOK?
BAD DRUGS and PARANOIA. BACK STABBING and RIP-OFFERY. Y'know life.......
Thats without going into the BAD stuff.
The 'wirey' out of tune guitars that chicken scratch at your psyche.
The "drums being kicked down the staircase" BIG BEAT.....Gary Glitter meets JAMES BROWN uptown.
The purposefuly anemic but HUGE and turgid bass undulations.
ONE NOTE SOLOS.
Mark scratching on the microphone so that it sounds like someone or something is trying to scrape its way OUT OF YOUR SPEAKERS upon playback.
LO FI NO FI .....RIGHT FI.....FEE FI thumbed noses.
"TURN THOSE BLOODY SPACE INVADERS OFF - UHHH" ... keyboard tone setting.
And to top it off......from my perspective at least the funniest and most interesting lyrics in modern music.
BOB DYLAN FANS TAKE ELEVATOR TO 13th floor AND EXIT THIS DIATRIBE BY WAY OF WINDOW PLEASE....
An example of this lyrical prowess......I could pick any of a thousand.
Check this one out for example.....
It's about methedrine related insomnia....squalid ciity living...creeping paranoia and worry.
Such that you cannot....WALK THE FLOOR AT NIGHT IN PEACE. Pacing the floor y'gedditt?
Such conditions must be the fault of another.....CITY HOBGOBLINS perchance???
CITY HOBGOBLINS
Spiders know these things
Gremlins know these things
Tap, tap, tap, tap
You think it's the pipes
But who turns on the lights?
Our city hobgoblins
Ubu le Roi is a home hobgoblin
at night
always ready.
City hobgoblins
Infest my home at night
They are not alright
Ten times my age
One-tenth my height
Our city hobgoblins
Buzz of the all-night mill
Ah but evil
Emigres from old green glades
Pretentious eh?
Our city hobgoblins
They'll get yer
I saw Queen Victoria
on the back of a large black slug
Where?
in Piccadilly, Manchester
Our city hobgoblins
They stay
I say
We cannot walk the floor
at night in peace
At night in peace
At night in peace
ME NOW.....So in closing I leave you with this thought.
Tim knows his music.
He perhaps makes several good points about MARK. He is undoubtedly a man with a strong sense of self. He may well have a large ego. He is unruly, disagreeable and contrarian in nature it would seem. I have never properly met the man so can't really be the judge of such matters.
His empirical history provides us with one obvious elemental truth about Mr. Smith.
He is a survivor. Plain and simple.
In my view....
He is a working class success story from Manchester who succeeded through bloody minded persistence and self-belief.
Begrudge him or commend him...Your choice.
MARK COULD NOT CARE LESS either way I imagine.
A genius ????? God knows.
HIP PRIEST?
(stolen from Burroughs...notebooks out plagiarists)
No such thing.
A haggard "speedy" snaggle toothed POET LAUREATE for the terminally disenfranchised.
YES...
I believe so.
and a lot more besides when you really get into it....

I am the luckiest girl in the world because I get to say to you:
Happy Wedding Anniversary to the Love of my Life.
I am honored to be your wife and I am completely devoted to you. You are an amazing person, man, husband, father. I cherish our time together and look forward to our future. You are kind, forgiving, full of thought, charming, fun, intelligent, passionate, compassionate and sweet. I admire you and I am so proud of you. I have never met anyone with as much integrity as you--the more time we spend together, the more evident this becomes. Thank you for your devotion to me, thank you for loving me as I am, thank you for wanting me, thank you for making me your family.
All my love,
Yours
