<div>I just lost my day job, my awesome rad day job that paid me decent money for 20 hours a week so I could take that money and the rest of the week and pour it into building my company. I love my 2 bosses dearly. They are on the verge of closing up shop permanently after 20+ years and I am sad for them.

I am now looking for a job. These are the things I am qualified/looking for:

--part time or freelance
--telecommuting also cool
--admin stuff
--teaching English and any fashion related studies
--design, illustration, construction work, graphic stuff
--being my fabulous self
--make ridiculously delicious Korean food for events

Of course I will be looking for things on my own but any help is most appreciated.

Thanks!</div>

recovering from being near death is horrible, but recovering alone is worse. she misses cole a lot but can't spend a lot of time with him right now and that's making her sad too. you can help by cheering her up!

<div>Dammit, I love tribe. I hope it doesn't die but I'm afraid it will and soon. I met some really awesome people on tribe, as well as some not so awesome. I got laid a lot from tribe. I met my husband on tribe. I've snagged temp jobs off tribe listings when I first moved to SF and was jobhunting. I've gone to some cool parties and learned a lot about things I didn't even know existed.

This fall will mark 5 years I've been on tribe. I've come a long way since that poor, barely-out -of-college, invalid, overworked soul up to her eyeballs in debt and tiredness who jumped on tribe only because some kid she once boinked made her join and the doctor-ordered bedrest made her bored out her skull. (Fuck. Who was that girl?)

All these million private messages, private flirtations, public scandals, ridiculous games, fun times and imagined dramas. I wish I could go to amazon.com and order a book holding the archives of the past 5 years of my doings and undoings on tribe.

Yes, I'm preemptively mourning its loss in a rather pathetic way but I can't help it. I get sappy. I'm not sure if a lot people know this about me but I am. I can be wonderfully, horrifically sappy. Go ahead, mock me, but I know deep inside, you'll mourn a little too. I mean, after all, you're still here, logged in, and reading tribe blog posts, aren't you? ;)</div>

<div>I took some me-time/fam-time this past weekend. I spent a little time being a kid in her 20s, which is what I am. Sometimes people forget that. Mostly, I forget that.

I drove down to L.A. on Wednesday. I’m really lucky in that Assaf gets along with my family and I get along with all the in-laws I’ve met so far. It wasn't always this way. Just before I left, my dad asked us if we were going to come down for Christmas and Assaf said “sure” without sarcasm.

(None of my family members have met any of my in-laws. I would need a note-taker at my side at all times to document the hilarity if and when that were to happen. Loud, short-tempered, blunt and yet excessively polite around strangers Koreans meet quieter but still chattychatty Israeli Jews with Polish manners. Are you laughing yet? Who wants to sign up to be that fly on the wall?)

My dad’s new girlfriend is a very good cook so the husband and I had some really great home-cooked meals. She packed a spare ice chest full of jars of kimchee and various Korean pickled veggies and freezer bags of marinated beef for us to take home. I’m a decent cook but she’s got mad skills.

My dad also prepared this Korean ground bean and powder honey stuff for me. Apparently you dissolve a spoonful in milk to drink and it’s good to treat thinning hair. My dad’s already seen some regrowth and his friend’s lashes scrape his glasses now. My dad knows my already fine hair tends to fall out when I stress out so he bought me a lot of this stuff. I also got his excellent fruit smoothie recipe. Oh, and his aviators. Hee. "Dad, we look so much alike, I'm sure they'll look good on me...lookitthat! Who thinks they look better on me? Family vote!"

Speaking of hair, I stopped by this beauty shop on Larchmont, after stopping by my favorite sushi place for lunch, and *finally* got myself a bottle of Klorane’s dry shampoo. This stuff is amazing! I have thin, fine hair that gets greasy quickly. I shower around 7:30am every day and often looks just-barely-not-quite-disgusting by 7:30pm and of course it goes downhill from there. It’s a white spray but the color disappears against my dark brown hair once you comb it through.

On Saturday, I finally got to meet the infamous Charlie that Tara and Frances have been talking about so much. Fun guy. His nickname for Assaf is "Chatty Cathy". He'd be in the middle of telling some anecdote and burst out with, "Hey man! Stop talking so much! I can't get a word in edgewise around you!" heeheehee...

Both my brother, James, and my cousin, Mike (Grace's kid brother), who is practically another brother to me are deep in college prep mode–the former to start, the latter to transfer. We had some long talks and it was good to get my mind off of my own crap and feel sorta useful at the same time. It was also good to remind myself of how lucky I am to a. know what I want to do with my life and b. be past college. I mean, college was great but the roller coaster of uncertainty, cockiness, fear, and carelessness can only be ridden for so long.

Now I'm back in Oakland, still trying to figure out this ZHI mess I've gotten myself into. Fun stuff. I find it hysterical that random strangers hunt me down on the interwebs and ask me for career advice. HA!</div>

China Olympic ceremony star mimed

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/kingzoe/blog/79865b35-5f20-4660-919b-a79394875bed"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/dc1/823/dc18237c-2d26-4d2a-ac91-d4f3cabf4ad4.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7556058.stm

A pretty girl who won national fame after singing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was only miming.

Wearing a red dress and pigtails, Lin Miaoke charmed a worldwide audience with a rendition of "Ode to the Motherland". But the singer was Yang Peiyi, who was not allowed to appear because she is not as "flawless" as nine-year-old Lin. The show's musical director said Lin was used because it was in the best interests of the country.

Speaking on Beijing Radio station, musical director Chen Qigang said the organisers needed a girl with both a good image and a good voice. They faced a dilemma because although Lin was prettier, seven-year-old Yang had the better voice, Mr Chen said.

"After several tests, we decided to put Lin Miaoke on the live picture, while using Yang Peiyi's voice," he told the radio station.

"The reason for this is that we must put our country's interest first," he added.

"The girl appearing on the picture must be flawless in terms of her facial expression and the great feeling she can give to people."

Singer Lin, who is being called the "smiling angel", has already become a media celebrity because of her performance.

She told state-run China Daily that she felt "beautiful" in the red dress she wore during the performance.

Her dad told the newspaper that she already had fans all over the country.

According to Chinese news reports, Yang said she did not regret the decision, saying she was satisfied to have had her voice featured in the opening ceremony.

i'm spreading this story around like hot pepper flakes in my kitchen--anywhere possible.

i hate that story so much i can taste bile in my throat. i hate the stupid "for the country's best interests" line, i hate the stupid vapid "cute" girl who is all proud of her fake fans and i hate the subservient attitude shoved down the "ugly" girl's throat all her life that allows her to accept this treatment. for the good of the country??? you join the military for your country. you pay your taxes for your country. you vote for the good of your country. it's ludicrous.

"honey, you're just not that cute. you must sing this song absolutely perfectly and allow someone cuter than you to take the credit. it's for the good of the country."

of course, judging from what i know of the chinese government, the "ugly" girl is most likely unhappy but under a lot of pressure to pretend to be happy.

once i overheard relatives having the following conversation:

"the oldest, she's very smart."
"yes, very smart. she could go to a top school"
"it's good she's smart because she most likely can't get married"
"it's a shame she's so fat, since her face is actually nicer than the younger one's"
"it'll be fine, she will do well on her own. husbands are such nuisances anyways" *a round of laughs*

that undertone tone of being smart as a backup in case a girl isn't cute enough to land a man. come to think of it, i married at a younger age than any of my girl-cousins. hrm. never noticed that before.

anyway, i'm done rambling for today. i think.

Bad spelling 'should be accepted'

<div>http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7546975.stm

Common spelling mistakes should be accepted into everyday use, not corrected, a lecturer has said.

Ken Smith of Bucks New University says the most common mistakes should be accepted as "variant spellings".

He lists the 10 most commonly misspelt words, which include "arguement" for "argument" and "twelth" for "twelfth".

Mr Smith says his proposal, outlined in an article in the Times Higher Education Supplement, follows years of correcting the same mistakes.

Mr Smith, a criminology lecturer, said: "Instead of complaining about the state of the education system as we correct the same mistakes year after year, I've got a better idea.

"University teachers should simply accept as variant spellings those words our students most commonly misspell.

"The spelling of the word 'judgement', for example, is now widely accepted as a variant of 'judgment', so why can't 'truely' be accepted as a variant spelling of 'truly'?"

Mr Smith also suggested adding the word "misspelt" to the list and all those that break the "i before e" rule - weird, seize, neighbour and foreign.

He said he was not asking people to learn to spell words differently.

"All I am suggesting is that we might well put 20 or so of the most commonly misspelt words in the English language on the same footing as those other words that have a widely accepted variant spelling," he added.

I find this article seriously annoying, despite being able to see both sides of the coin. More later. Thoughts?

    </a>
<div>This product works great for me when I have a migraine. Just spreading the word because I care like that, yo. Not very eco-friendly, as they are 1-time use products, but when you're in suicidal peaks of pain, you tend not to care. I have reusable ice-packs for instances when I have the energy to keep going to the freezer.

Anywho, these are wonderful. I hope you'll never have a need for them, but should you ever use one, I hope you find them as beneficial as I did. I also found them an excellent sleep aid when you can't fall asleep because you think you'll get another migraine.

They are currently on 2-for-1 special at the Alameda Walgreens.

there will be some excruciatingly egotistical blog posts in the near future. please excuse the temporary obnoxious levels of cockiness and bear with me. or, just don't read them.

the story of purple

<div>it was my junior year of college

the curriculum at school for fashion juniors and seniors:
a few designers/companies presents a design project. you sign up for a team. sometimes you don't get your first choice. you design and design and design for a few months. edit edit edit, 1 outfit gets chosen to be made for the runway show at the end of the year. then you work for a few months on perfecting the construction of the chosen outfit.

in my time, you did 2 such projects a year your junior year, seniors did 3.

so this huge swim/surf company comes to do a design project with the juniors. i won't name the company here cuz they're so huge they could sue me on a whim. anyway, it wasn't my first choice.

fabrics: solid lavendar, solid lime green, lavendar/lime rugby stripe (rugby stripe is horizontal and each stripe is 2"+ wide)

design direction: hippy meets preppy. make swimsuits for high school/college girl market. preppy styles with hippie touches like purple crochet swimsuit coverups, lime linen bellbottoms, white yarn crossstitch details, etc etc etc. little purple yarn flowers on lavender/lime stripe bikinis. purple wood buttons on a polo placket on a 1 piece with a yarn-embroidery left chest lime green thingie. etc. etc. you know.

ah, the ultimate test for a designer. take the ugliest directive and try to make it cute. hrm.

this was the project where everything that could go wrong, went wrong. not just for me, for the whole team. first of all, the directive was so unappealing that hardly anyone had chosen it as their top pick. secondly, the team consensus was that the company's rep picked the ugliest styles for the show and we were pissed.

the once-promised-as-free fabric became $3/yd, which is still cheap, but you know, they said it would be free. the sampling fabric they send was completely different than the final fabric, which completely defeats the purpose of the first sample, especially for bikinis, where you're 1/4" off and you're screwed. so we had to redo our patterns from scratch.

then, some dipshit hired a fit model with a sway back which fucked up everyone who was constructing a 1-piece or a tankini. the final fabric was so cheaply printed that when you stretched it a little, the stretched bit was almost white. it was impossible to work with. i ended up buying 2 yards of 60" wide CRAP so i could make a size 2 bikini.

the whole project was cursed from day 1 i think. a classmate accidently snipped the strap of her bikini JUST as she was putting on the final touches (trimming loose threads). i had purple splotches for a week in a linen dyeing accident. i tried twice and my dept chair felt so sorry for my splotchy arms she told me it was ok to ditch them. gloves only go so far up your arm, you know.

(of course, my bikini was difficult to make because i'm a masochist too. i had these bias stripes sewn to form chevrons and the vertical seams had to be curved so they would look straight when stretched over boobs and butts. but that's neither here nor there at this point.)

5 months of hell and then we had revisit it for show prep. (model castings, final fittings, etc)
5 months of hell engulfed in a seemingly constant haze of various shades of purple and lime green.

it was the only thing i made in school that i decided to sell at the end of the year auction. and someone actually bought that thing! ew. they probably wear uggs too. in purple. and it's the only project i never show people, i don't include it in any of my portfolios. i showed it once to nab a freelance swimwear illustration gig straight out of school and only because it was fucking Ralph Lauren (they do the swim stuff out of SoCal). it's the one project i don't do the whole "awesome memories nostalgia let me tell you this rad story" thing with.

btw, i don't care for lime green either but no one really seems to make a fuss out of that.

so there you go. this is why i hate purple (and lime green and especially when they're together).

<div>scene: a guy, a sleaze and an asshole walk into a bar....no, seriously.
my friend (J--she is the woman who runs the factory i work with and she's up once a month or so and we get together and talk business and personal and stuff) and i are sitting at an outdoor bar, chatting. her pack of cigs is sitting on the table. a group of 3 guys approach us.

guy: hi, can we bum some cigs from you?
J: (peeks in box) actually, we only have 3 left for the 2 of us for the rest of the night, so i'm sorry, that'll be a no
sleazy creep: (starts massaging J's shoulders. she's wearing a wide v-neck, but not really revealing, but the guy actually pushed the shirt away and touches her skin) i'll trade you a massage for it
J: (shrugs him off) no, i don't think so

at this point, the guy and the sleazebag walk away but the asshole actually picks up the box of cigs and pulls one out

me: you do realize you're stealing
asshole: it's a cigarette
me: so? it's my friend's cigarette that she just told you you couldn't have
asshole: (picks up lighter and starts trying to light the cig) it's a cigarette.
me: still not your fucking cigarette

asshole can't seem to work lighter in his drunk idiotic bumbling

J: i think it's a sign that you're not supposed to be stealing cigarettes so give it back

J reaches for the cig and the asshole takes off with the cig still clamped in his mouth

moral of the story, keep your cigs in your purse. </div>

<div>Lots of people ask me for recommendations on my favorite Korean places and I'm one of those people who usually know how to get somewhere but can't remember the street address. Now that I have access to a map, I can give proper addresses. Besides most of y'all is too drunk to remember any thing I tell you the next day.

I haven't been everywhere (y'all know how often I leave the house...), but here are my recommendations so far and I will update periodically.

BBQ (other than my house):
Ohgane
http://www.ohganebbq.com/
Open 7 days a week 11am to 11pm
(510) 594-8300
3915 Broadway
Oakland, California 94611

non-BBQ food: (well, they have bbq, but not the grill it yourself at your table kind)
Sahnmaru
Open 11am-12am but CLOSED ON TUESDAYS
4315 Telegraph Ave, Oakland, CA
(510) 653-3366

Ask for the goat--it's awesome. Also, this joint has the best damn dol sot bi bim bap on the fucking planet. (That's the mixed rice in the hot stone pot. It's Assaf's favorite, so we've tried it at every restaurant we've been to. It's even *gasp* better than mine.)

"Now fashion mags make models 'fatter' "

<div>Fashion magazines are manipulating images of skinny models to make them look "fatter" than they really are.

The move is a response to critics who blame images of so-called "size zero" models for the rise in eating disorders in young girls.
The fashion industry has long been accused of making models and actresses look thinner and is now using the same techniques in reverse to deflect criticism.

Belinda Coleman, of the retouching agency The Shoemakers Elves, said there was a trend towards presenting less "extreme" images of thinness and of enhancing figures. "Where models are looking particularly gaunt, magazines are saying, 'We can't have that - fill out their chests,'?" she said.

"It is now deemed just as negative to be too thin as too fat. Everyone is scared of being highlighted as the magazine or label that promotes very thin girls, so they are being a lot more careful about the images they present."

Another agency, the iWanex Studio, boasts a portfolio of "before and after" images of celebrities that it has retouched for magazines.

In one of the "after" photographs, the thighs of Cameron Diaz, the actress, have been visibly widened, her arms filled out and her stomach made smoother and rounder, with her prominent hip bones from the "before" photograph erased. [click http://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/main.jhtml?xml=/fashion/2008/04/13/efmags113.xml for photos]

Nicky Eaton, the head of press and PR at Condé Nast, which publishes Vogue, GQ, and Glamour, also confirmed that images of models were enhanced to make them appear fuller-figured.

"There have been cases where models are booked way ahead of a shoot and then they turn up two months later looking less healthy and perhaps a bit underweight. We wouldn't be happy showing them that way, so it is then that we would need that person to look a little bit fuller."

But Susan Ringwood, the chief executive of the eating disorder charity Beat, condemned the practice. "Altering models' bodies to appear fuller-figured proves that the industry acknowledges there is a serious issue with projecting images of very thin models, but [it is] missing the point," she said. "They should be using naturally healthy models in the first instance, instead of having to make them look that way."

In 2003, Kate Winslet, who has defended fuller-figured women, appeared on the cover of GQ in a picture that had been altered without her knowledge to make her appear much slimmer.

The following year, Keira Knightley was shocked after appearing with an enhanced bust on posters for the film King Arthur. Last year, however, she dismissed reports that her image in adverts for Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle perfume had been enhanced, despite speculation that she was made to look curvier.

This month, the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA), which represents the magazine industry, appealed for the introduction of a voluntary code regulating the use of digital manipulation and is to hold discussions on the issue with magazine editors.</div>

learning a new language

<div>so i'm thinking of taking up either Mandarin or Italian. i think my commute bothers me because i'm doing nothing but walking and listening to music and yes, it's very good that i get some exercise every day but whatever, it bothers me that i waste almost two hours a day commuting. i don't find it particularly relaxing or stress-relieving, as i relax in other ways. so i want to learn a language, which i've been meaning to do forever.

i could improve my korean or russian (and judging from my grammar lately, i could use another English course). or do something totally new. i could go the fashionista route and take up French or Italian. or i could go the garmento route and learn Spanish or Mandarin. (not Cantonese, everyone in Hong Kong speaks English anyway. at least they should, if they insist on still taking British holidays. heh.)

i'm wondering if there's a program that i can load into my iphone/ipod and listen to it while i'm traipsing to and from bart? anyone know of anything like that?</div>
