"Shaini" is an ancient title preserved in the myths of many cultures within this imagined world. I'll offer an abridged version of what these myths recount. Eshaini was The-One-Who-Became-The-Many. He's the archetypal creator. He gave birth to the Entities, and the world itself - the land in all its variance, the seas, air, and all physical creation - emerged from the Entities' thoughts. Eons passed, and the Entities began to inhabit the world as physical creatures. So they dwelt upon the earth, but also participated in its creation. They were the first humans. As time passed, these founding fathers became enwrapped in the physical world. The wisest among them sensed a danger, that they might forget the true origin of their lives. These wise ones became the Shaini. Upon them fell the task of reminding mankind of its spiritual heritage, which they did by inventing stories, songs, dances, rituals, etc. They were the first artists and healers. Fast forward many millenia. In the story's present day there is a persistent implication, given by several characters whom Eden encounters, that he is destined to perform the same sacred functions as the Shaini of old. And his world, like our own, sorely needs such reminding.
