Yesterday, I did a data recovery for a client. His hard drive had failed all the data had corrupted. I often do data recovery, and it's a rather terrible thankless job. Everyone complains about having to pay for it, because it's tedious, and takes hours and hours. There's nothing worse than having to babysit a defective hard drive all night, listening to it click endlessly, and nursing it past recovery errors. It's often more of an art and a series of educated guesses than a science. A good sized drive will take 12 or more hours. This one took a little more than 16.
I managed to get all of his data back. It seemed to be all photographs. When I brought it back to him for review, he told me that they were all photographs of his girlfriend that had died several years ago, and they were the only ones that he'd had of her.
You kinda can't bill someone for something like that. It’s not often that people are that grateful in my line of work, and it’s seldom that personal.
Someone remarked to me once that if your house is on fire, after your children and pets, what people will rush in to rescue are their photographs. I'm not used to my work being this personal.

about me
I consider myself fairly well read, and have on occasion been described as articulate. I'm a computer technician these days, mostly network administration. I'm interested in art, music, and literature. How's that for a generalization? I guess I should mention Gustav Klimpt, John Coltrain, and Neal Stephenson, but I didn't want to limit myself. The internet and my job have damaged my attention span to the point where I've had to force myself to start reading regularly again. I'm re-reading Moby Dick at the moment. It's actually better this time, because I'm forcing myself to slow down and pay more attention.
I enjoy simple pleasures, like a bottle of Trader Joe's port, and breakfast at the local cafe run by the Chinese couple in their 70's that fight constantly (high comedy, actually).
It's been recently suggested that I may have Asperger's Syndrome. Not sure how to deal with being diagnosed as autistic at nearly 40, but it does explain a lot.
