I'm shooting photos for the show.
I am looking for a place to possibly crash and/or someone to share the ride up with.

Sort of tangential to what I'm interested but it's still fun to be in an article:

http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Blacklight-takes-the-spotlight

The darker side of photography·
23 Apr 2008Blacklight takes the spotlight -
Photography is growing a darker side with many photographers choosing to experiment with blacklight when taking pictures.

"Dance into the fire, that fatal kiss is all we need." Dance into the fire, to fatal sounds of broken dreams."

Duran Duran sing these lines as a woman with fluorescent orange painted nails unzips her top, her chest spilling with 007 stamped across it which blazes out in contrast to her dark body.

This is the opening credits of A View to a Kill, the 1985 James Bond film with Roger Moore and Grace Jones.

As is always the case with Bond films, the opening celebrates the female form, this time with the girls wearing just UV paint which are lit up with a black light.

Such dramatic results are created by playing with UV black light and there are now quite a few photographers who are using it to create stunning pictures.
It is unclear who created blacklight photography as an art form and when it was first used, but many professionals - such as the police and archaeologists - have used it for many years to discover evidence or find objects, for example coins on digs.

But it doesn't matter if a photographer or forensic scientist is using it, blacklight always works in the same way. It involves photographing ultraviolet radiation which can be divided into three wavelengths. Firstly, the short wavelength (which is the most dangerous and the one that causes sunburn). the middle range (which is used in sun beds and is found in sunlight) and the longwave length which is black light - the one we are interested in.

It is great fun to experiment with different materials and objects under UV black light.

Many objects can glow to some extent but if you wish to intensify your images I suggest you use fluorescent paint.

To make full use of the fluorescence effect all other lights must be turned off and this can make setting exposure tricky. Use the light meter in your camera or a separate handheld meter to take a reading. If you're using a filter on the lens be sure to take the meter reading through the same filter as an added precaution bracket to make sure you capture the fluorescent colours at the correct exposure.

Of course you will need blacklight to produce these sorts of images. Many light sources emit in the UV range but blacklight usually comes in fluorescent tubing, similar to that of a fluorescent light tube only without the white coating. These can be bought from most general electrical retailers or hand-held models are regularly on offer on eBay for around £20.

Playing with blacklight can be quite easy and browsing around on Flickr I found plenty of photographers who use the technique. Some of the most interesting were the photographers who are associated with the club, festival and alternative music scene.

Spinning by Toby Keller.

One German photographer, who calls himself Beo, specialises in blacklight photography and has produced a huge array of extremely high quality images. He lived and worked in Barcelona for five years where he put on big performances in Spain's party capital Ibiza and in it's famous club Pacha, as well as taking pictures.

"I once put on a spectacular performance in a striptease club," said Beo "The police closed the club down after my show."

The show, which was held in Caramelos, Palma de Mallorca Spain in 2005, had girls wearing handmade plastic fluorescent bikinis with whips, masks and spikes. As well as helping make the outfits and taking the shots, Beo was a director, giving the girls ideas which they then developed into a show.

Beo got into blacklight photography when he was running a gallery in Cologne which showcased light objects. There he met and was inspired by artist Donald Van Der Velden who was painting abstracts with fluorescents. He then met an industrial designer Rolf Bender of Depro Design and Production who specialised in producing fluorescent plastics and these two aspects came together. Beo then became involved in blacklight photography and moved to Barcelona in 2000 where he opened his own studio.

Beo has created many beautiful images such as some of a performance artist with her face painted in tribal masks wearing long flowing clothes and girls covered in silver crystals.

Three other photographers who use blacklight photography are Stuart Meikle, Kyle Hailey and Toby Keller.

Stuart Meikle came across Croatian Damir Tiljak's blacklight photography work four years ago and uses the technique as an exercise at a youth group he works at in Newcastle.
"All the young people at the groups are into fashion and at first they just want to write their names as tattoos on their bodies with the fluorescent paint. But after we showed them tribal masks that got them thinking more creatively and they now come out with some great things" said Stuart.

Kyle Hailey from California takes pictures at counter-culture music events and festivals and he came across blacklight at the Shambala festival in British Columbia in 2005 where he took the picture shown to the right and has seen blacklight at the annual Burning Man Festival in the middle of the dessert in California.

Toby Keller, another Californian, experiments with light and came across blacklight by just playing around.

"I'm a light painter, it's a performance," said Toby. "It's all experimental really, just playing around."

Toby took the two amazing pictures shown above at his local beach by opening the shutter on his camera and then running around with the blacklight and pointing it back into the lens.

"There is a limited time, about five minutes, so I have to do it very quickly, dancing around almost. I traced over the rocks with the blacklight and this created the stripes on the picture," he said.

Toby said the blacklight doesn't show up very much to the human eye but it lights the whole area up on the photo and for this reason he wants to get a big bright light and experiment with it.

"I want to get a very large one metre long black light, but those have to be plugged in so I'll have to sort that out when doing landscapes," said Toby "It is all about playing with it really."

Trish and I went to bed at 7:30 last night - probably the earliest ever.

As a friend said " January 24th is the suckiest day of the year… some British study said so. And no kidding this is the most cruel moon of the year this one. Even if we aren’t starving and cold, our ancestors were, maybe it’s genetic memory.
Imbolc is coming and the days are already getting longer. "

LONDON - Is the midwinter weather wearing you down? Are you sinking in debt after the holidays? Angry with yourself for already breaking your New Year's resolutions? Wish you could crawl back under the covers and not have to face another day of rain, sleet, snow and paperwork? Probably. After all, it's Jan. 24, the “most depressing day of the year,” according to a U.K. psychologist.

Hey everyone,

We are looking for a couple to share our beautiful and spacious NE Portland home.
We have 3 rooms on the first floor to rent which are currently being used as a guest bedroom and two offices,
but the configuration is flexible.
Our home is a 4 bedroom two story craftsman built in 1907.
There is plenty of storage and work space possibilities in the huge basement.
The home was recently remodeled and has a large inviting kitchen.
We also have a cute back yard with lots of untapped potential.

We a block from Alberta with great shops, cafes, galleries and restaurants.

We are looking for financially stable, easy going couple in our community to complete our home.
We share our home with two adorable cats and are looking forward to introducing them to our future animal loving housemates.

We live fairly quiet lives and would appreciate the same rhythm. We want our home to be a comfortable welcoming and relaxing place. Move in date is flexible as finding the right roomates is the most important thing.

This tribe is a way of building connections and understanding what we are about. Our community reaches beyond race, class, gender, economic status, trust funds, body types and the like. The question is ... where are we going?

PS the above picture is from El Circo Friday night at Burningman. I had posted it on flickr and someone commented on the photo saying my photos "are like windows into a different world. Photos from a colony of Earth in the far flung future."
I couldn't help but wonder at the similarity between this comment and the current catch phrase "Beautiful people from the future."

										<div>
Heading to Bali tomorrow with Trish for our second honeymoon. Our first honeymoon was a pragmatic road trip to Portland to buy out house. This time will get to spend some romantic time in a beautiful magical exotic place.

If you have any suggestions on place to stay, sites to see or things to do, lets us know. We've never been there before but are super excited.

It's always crazy to hook up at BM, but I'll be camping at False Profit 4:30 and Esplande and I'll be around all night Tuesday, dusk till dawn, for FP's party.
If you want to meet up for photo stuff Tuesday night is probably the easiest.</div>

<div>Life is busy busy. This week is dedicated to computer geek work as I put a course book and class together to teach Aug 16th. I leave for Shambhala in just over a week, come back from Shambhala, fly to SF to teach the class, then back to Portland, then off to BM then to Bali for 3 weeks with Trish for our second honeymoon (first honeymoon was sort of a working honeymoon as we came to Portland and bought house)! Thus not much time to process photos. More photos from these events to come in the Fall when I have time but here are a few from the past week:
Last Thursday - our little Alberta neighborhood monthly street festival:

light, events and magic

    </a>
<div>THis summer is turning out to be a lot of processing about why I shoot photos and what it means to me and others.
First of all, I shoot photos because I love it. I love color, light and beauty. I love imagination and the magic that can be stirred through images. I've always loved art, but digital photography has turned into a wonderful effortless flow at times.
I want to capture beauty magic and have fun doing it and make other people happy at the same time.
That works most of the time.
Between Emrg-n-see and this past weekend at Raindance I got a good balance of working verses participating and I definitely would rather work, ie shoot photos.
I'm learning there are times to shoot and times not to but which is which is not clear. Raindance was so small and family that looking back, even though I didn't take many photos, that was sort of fine. It's a small community, not a show. On the other hand big events like Shambhala are much more public and I'm looking forward to shooting there.

										<div>
Emrg-n-see was beautiful, magical with awesome music and wonderful surroundings. Here are my favorite photos from the weekend

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kylehailey/sets/72157600442218108/

The photo experience from the weekend left me with mixed bag of feelings. One feeling was just to leave the photos far behind, but I know a lot of people wanted to see them. They were beautiful but depleted me and I'm still processing why. Part of it was I use to go to events have a blast and then be like "I want to capture this magic in photos" and then I'd bring out my camera. This time I went straight in taking photos. There were so many beautiful people and sites to photograph it was wonderful but in retrospect I think skipped connecting to energy of the event and just shot the surface beauty. Ironically a couple of people said the phtos were " too beautiful" which I interpret as they are missing grit and magic and as such the photos don't resonate deeply with me.
Its ironic to me but when I feel the most connected to the music and scene it almost feels ireverent to be shooting photos.

and for people who want more

Want to help shoot some fun photos at Emerg-n-See?

I'll be setting up a photo booth with Emmanuelle Sequoia (see http://wetribe.com/links/links.php ) my favorite photographer of our community!
She'll be helping set up the decor, art, costumes and lighting and maybe shooting some of the photos. Since she is coming up from the Bay Area she won't be able to bring up many props, and we are looking for local people to help with fun props for photos.

Also if you are interested in manning the photobooth and or taking photos, let me know.

<div>There is such inspiring echanting beauty here in Portland. I went to my first Bellydance event as I thought the esthetic might be similar to what fires my imagination. My expectations were surpased - it was beautiful. A couple of pictures of the beginning ritual reminded me of artists I find enchating like John Waterhouse or Delacroix (on super saturation, given)

    </a>
<div>Wonderful but quick weekend in SF - the first time we've been back since December when we moved to Portland. We were back to have a surprise birthday party for Trish's Mom 60th . The party went of flawlessly and was super success.
We didn't have much time to see many people but we did get to see our lovely friends Kevin and Holly and their new new baby Sophia. We stay at the FP Soap Factory which though brief was important to me, to be back and connect with for a few with friends who mean so much to me.
While at the Soap Factory I had a chance to take some pictures a few blocks away at Mighty with Lorin and Souleye which was a nice coincidence and all the more pleasure because I ran into several friends who I would have missed otherwise. Photos on:
