A Ghost In El Salvador

"I am back where I am supposed to belong and yet I don’t belong, and maybe I never did. I am then like a strange ghost that wanders through old abandoned mansions, seeing things that are not there anymore, talking to people that died a long time ago, hoping for things that never happened and never will.
My ghostly nature, as I prepare to embark on a journey to El Salvador once again, can help me or hurt me. I can fade into the whiteness of the walls and simply pass the time, letting my father and the people around me decide what it is I am doing and why I am there. I can do it out of courtesy. I can do it out of kindness. I can do it out of shyness.
Or I can see that I am no longer one of them."

I talked with my Grandmother Graciela one sunny afternoon in El Salvador and, through her tales, I caught a glimpse of how much the world has changed within a single human lifetime.
A lot has been gained in comfort and sophistication and technological power but what has been lost may be so grand and beautiful and subtle that only a few mourners will show up for the final farewell.
Have a brief and blurry look at a world that was already fading before most of us opened our eyes for the very first time.

During the early 20th century and before, reality was assumed by the mainstream to be everything you can see, smell, touch, and hear. The discovery of the electron, radio, and x-rays turned that assumption around. By 1930 it was clear that 99.9% of reality is not contactable or apprehendable by the human senses, thus making us blind voyagers in an invisible world that may touch us without our knowledge.
