Waste Man 2007

   Fri, September 7, 2007 - 11:27 AM
Hey everyone, here goes. Just back from BRC--wonderful communion of people this year. I look forward to seeing everyone at Anon tommorow night! (9th and Folsom 10pm+

The one thing I was troubled over however, this year was the lack of "green" in Green man. I felt pretty awful about the huge explosion that occured on Saturday night--i.e. using over 25K of propane to show that we can use over 25K of propane.

25K of propane, ladies and gentleman, would power up Haitie for a week!

Anyway, I would have felt better about the expenditure of resources, if the event this year were entitled,
"Wasteman"2007 rather than suger--or in this case green coat the event.

Anyway, I thought that the energy this year was spectacular and look forward to all the regionals coming up.

Laurie

hi laurie. i feel that fire art is very rare and should be protected as one protects an endangered spieces.... i would gladly not drive a car all year round to see what i saw last saturday night!

heres something a ranger posted on the NYC list - not sure if its true or not but here you go:

"Slighlty related...initially I was disturbed to learn that this burn involved 10,000 gallons of fuel. My (albeit naive) reaction was: my GOD! This is supposed to be a "Green" event? And we're essentially "wasting" tons of fuel on something that's primarily for our entertainment??!!!! (I mean I'm all for art, but some things feel like a counterproductive statement)

This past Tuesday morning, however, I learned more details about that fuel: I happened to meet one of the two men who provided all the fuel for that burn, and through the course of it learned that 40% of the fuel (which this person provided) came from Marine Recovery...in other words, recovered fuel barrels from sunken / crashed boats, which HAS to be gotten out of the sea so it doesn't contaminate the ecosystem--and then has to be disposed of as HAZMAT. Burning it is actually better, as it doesn't need to be contained (though no doubt someone would have an opinion on the emissions; I'm just not enough of a scientist to weigh one against the other). And then the other 60% (if I'm getting the ratio right) came from a man who works at NASA...and is discarded / unusable jet fuel."

Thanks: Two cities rolled into one?
Stacey cats, thanks for the information. I didn't know the fuel was recycled. This is really really good to hear nevertheless.
For me I think the act of explosion of that size has really or potentially inspie other actions of this kind.

If only BMorg could have told us what you have just told us Stacey--I think it would help to allay alot of people's feelings around the explosion and fuel

Robinhood--your a goddess for cleaning our moop lady. Its the same every year, and getting worse with all the new folks. I think as a community we should really consider breaking the event into two cities!

We could have dueling Sparta/Athens or Brooklyn v. Manhatttan Black Rock cities!!!!!!

quick math
let say 50,000 people at the burn this year the BLM says more but hey who really knows?
each person used 20 gallons of gasoline to get to burningman and back, distance, carpooling, vehicle efficiency all vary so maybe more.
that would be 1 million gallons of gasoline to get to and from Burningman.
If we could have got a few Amtrack trains (for the freaks) and some container trains (for the cargo, art and hobos) on the rail line that ran nearby and shuttle people in all those BRC party busses to the event that would have reduced fuel usage far more than stopping fire art. Sadly the rail industry is tough to deal with and make it impossible to do such a thing.

Shades of Green
So long as you buy enough offsets to compensate for the CO2 released in the explosion/fire, it can still be considered green, just a lighter shade than many would want. It is still wasteful, I won't argue that, which makes the shade of green even lighter. In the grand scheme of things, however, so long as it is climate neutral, I look forward to bigger and better explosions out there in the coming years.
