I've always meant to spend some time in the Spencer Library here on campus. The collections are nothing short of spectacular, and as a result the rules are strict and the atmosphere very guarded, so I've never gotten around to actually going in. But this morning my history class took a tour, so I walked into the reading room at Spencer with the full expectation of being somewhat overwhelmed. What I never expected was to be shaken this deeply, reminded harshly and undeniably of why it is th...

Well, it's a boy . I brought home a beautiful 1 year old Shepherd/Husky mix from the humane society today. He's very nervous and shy, and not at all sure about this whole living with a human thing, and even more unsure about that ball of furry evil who I call a cat. But he is eager to please for all of that, I expect he'll be wonderful once he settles in a bit.

I experienced a rare and incredible thing today, a lazy Sunday afternoon. The new job and exciting new car trouble effectively trashed my SCA event plans for the weekend, and in an amazing burst of energy this morning I got caught up on my homework, cleaned the living room, and finished my laundry and accomplished enough of the other "I'll get to it later" tasks that I can now sit down, relatively guilt free, and engage in one of my favorite time wasters: reading old blog entries.

A dog training book I read years ago referenced this project, and I was quite fascinated by the idea. It makes sense that we would select for juvenile qualities in our domestic animals because it makes them easier to handle, but by selecting solely on behavior they also produced consistent physical changes in the group, and those changes were the same sort that made the foxes "cuter" to human eyes. When you consider that this project ha... read more
So, Pennsic, the one SCA related thing that I've been told since I joined that I must experience at least once, and as usual, I'm very glad I listened to my friends. My head didn't explode, I must be made of sterner stuff than any of us thought. It might have been a near thing at the Mardi Gras party though, if I hadn't been just concentrating on remaining on my feet. There were some pretty creepy people there. Mostly I just avoided the bog, it was too wet and too hot and close down there...
