First the Good News! You are Loved! You have choice! You have access to resources to help you to understand what’s happening in your world and why. You are Truly an Unlimited Spiritual Being of Great Dignity and Power, with a Destiny and a Loving Higher Power which is always available and always responding to you and the world. IF you know how to access it! The Divine is Love. Love knows no boundaries or conditions. Prayer/Meditation/Visualization/Intention

Simple! Spirit, which exists in PEACE, waits for us to return to our own inner peace, in order to connect to us, and to assist us. This is the Law of Attraction, ie. like attracts like. To connect with the part of Self that is Peace, we must become Peace, if only briefly. In those seconds or minutes or hours, we Awaken to our True Selves, and return to this world, informed, inspired, and empowered. I have been blessed to experience this truth, peace creates miracles, over and over again. Look at Jill Bolte Taylor’s video on her spiritual awakening during a stroke. OMG! The Economic Collapse, The War on Terror and Global Warming, are ALL manmade, yes, I can show you, created and used for the express purpose of keeping humanity, frightened, distracted and overwhelmed. We are in for the most intensely depressing and/or exciting year of our lives! There will be less space to stay neutral, to stay on the fence, to hide out in our old/current belief systems: if we are not aligned to the deeper truths that are truly within each of us to guide us and care for us in times of great change. The acceleration of consciousness will continue to invite us to befriend or confront our responsibilities to grow, heal and awaken. David Icke, Alex Jones, Michael Tsarion, Red Ice Creations, and others are helping us to awaken to how we have given our power away.

We are in the last two years of a cycle focusing on Ethics, which will absolutely demand that we and our world re-examine what we believe, how deeply we believe it, and if it’s True! Consciousness is accelerating exponentially up through 2011/2012 and beyond. There is ample scientific evidence describing physical changes throughout the universe. Simply thought/feeling/beliefs become Manifest more and more quickly. This is not the end of THE world, it is the end of the world we have lived in for the last 26,000 years. Your Very Own Magical Inner Child

The way, the truth, the light and the peace within me…
is the peace around me.

There is nothing more powerful than when you humble
Yourself to the wisdom within you… and ask for help.

The power within you is ALWAYS GREATER than the power around you.
You will always know when you have made this shift
because you will not fear tomorrow, you will not fear the unknown,
and you will not fear change.

Your future is within you already, and you find it by looking within
and bringing it forth in your innocence, in your peace and in your joy.

It’s not… if only. It is here and now.

You DO deserve to be happy.
You Can begin to remember what life is meant to be about.
You will at some point, in some lifetime, at long last, allow yourself to come home to love.
Why not now?



As you follow your breath, as you hear the beat of your heart, as you feel the pulse of blood flow through your veins, as you let your mind relax into your centre, your magical inner child is there with you. S/he is with you right now, is working on you even as we speak here tonight. Is coming closer, and getting clearer, with each and every one of you. Dear ones, you are in truth this magical inner child, and you came into this world not once, not 100 times, but thousands of times, to give yourself at long last, perhaps now, permission to look within and say… “Yes!”
Your hearts are opening wide and full, and you are moving into this beautiful, deeper place within yourself… to your inner child, your divine or magical inner child. To begin to really know that you are deserving! You Deserve! No one and nothing can stop you from having what you desire except for your own self judgment/self-doubt. You are always free to make the meaning of your life. You do this by choosing, moment by moment what you believe.
Your inner child IS HAPPINESS and JOY and they know how to bring you to this place of freedom within yourself, as you learn to listen, trust and to take inspired action in your daily life. You can begin to access the power of being your magical inner child. Then you can begin to feel safe enough to be playful, joyous, trusting, open, giving, creative, spontaneous and free.
This is what we want to talk about in terms of emotional healing, you are deserving, and if you can just work with that focus and begin to FEEL that, you will find powerful, powerful changes happening for you. Deserving has been resisted, it has been projected outside of yourself, it has been made mysterious and seemingly unknowable. Yet it is not any of these things to your Magical Inner Child.
Truly as we have heard your sharing here this evening, we so appreciate your openness, your vulnerability, your intimacy, all of what you’re creating together at this time. You’re all working on feeling more deserving, on being more deeply in touch with the fact, that you have a right to your happiness, that you have a right to be loved for who you are, and absolutely that you have a right to know that you are always safe loved and supported, that your inner guidance is for you and not against you, that all is well.
This is the energy that you have been seeking, from the inner work over the previous months that you’ve done, to prepare for the energies that are happening on the planet right now for millions of you… that you are not your ego, that you need not identify or give away your power to the denial of self, to release and make peace with the fears of your true self, that the heart is wiser than the mind, and that love is stronger than fear.
To understand that it is the “Truer You” that is creating your reality, and you are in here in this lifetime, to truly become a master at creating your reality, or shall we say, in order to become masters, you must first consciously learn to create your reality, by doing this you master that which you have come here to learn. Reality is your feedback system, and it works wonderfully well. It always tells you where you are at, with your consistent and honourable desires for happiness and joy.
So we ask you to play a game of pretend now, that as you go through the remaining energy of this time together, that you say…
What would it feel like to truly have what my heart’s desires whether I even know what they are consciously or not?
What would it feel like to know that I have all the financial resources I need to accomplish my goals?
What would it feel like to know that I am always safe, loved and supported?
What would it feel like….?
And to play this game of pretend with your magical inner child, for oh, lets see, how long I can go?
Can I feel this for perhaps the next few minutes?
Can I feel this, from time to time, for perhaps the next few hours?
To begin to understand that every time I daydream, every time I focus on how good it feels to know this to play in this way…to think of this, I am connecting with my magical inner child.
I am going to go into my deserving and loving and magical inner child.
To my magical inner child, just take a deep breath into that.
Dear friends you know that you are never happier in your life than when you feel safe to play and as we have said to many of you now many times you’ve had a lot of work and a lot of things to work on and that’s serious and that’s adult and sometimes that is absolutely necessary and sometimes it is absolutely unnecessary.
That’s the good news. So as was said here if you can take any little slice of time, a sliver of your day dear friends, to come into your playful self and to begin to imagine, to remember, to pretend… What would it be like if everything in my life were working absolutely beautifully? Who would I be then? You would be your magical inner child, each and every time, with greater strength and greater trust. And it just gets easier and more fun with practice.
Abraham here has asked the lovely question…Wouldn’t it be nice if…?
Wouldn’t it be nice if I were doing the work that I love to do with my life each and every day?
Wouldn’t it be nice if I truly knew that I was safe loved and supported in my partnership, in my friendships and in all my relationships?
Wouldn’t it be lovely to know that where I am living and how I am living are divinely and perfectly supported by my spirit and by mother earth?
The joy and happiness you feel as you begin to feel your way into those questions are gifts and treats to your magical inner child!
It is not when you have done your best and “failed” that is the cause of your suffering. It is all the possibilities and opportunities that you are daily creating for yourself that you turn your back on and resist which causes you the greatest pain and deepest longing.
You DO deserve to be happy. You Can begin to remember what life is meant to be about. You will at some point, in some lifetime, at long last, allow yourself to come home to love. Why not now?
Whatever you are releasing in your lives, we ask not only forgiveness for your Self, but also compassion, compassion – be with your fears, your hurts, your doubts, your worries, but become gentle with them: this also your magical inner child can help you with.
As you stop holding yourself back, they will take you by the hand and whisper the words you have so often longed to hear…”Let me help you. Let me love you. Let me show you how.”
We have given that message more than a few times and we are happy to repeat it here. Be gentle with your fears, your doubts, your worries, your hurts. That is what compassion is. Compassion is the care that is born out of sorrow. It is caring for yourself or another because you know that you matter. You are remembering that your choices are pregnant with meaning and possibility.
Is there a meaning for struggle, for pain, for fear? Yes of course there is because dear ones you are brilliant and bright and beautiful spiritual lights and you will find meaning in any situation no matter how difficult or challenging. And can it be different dear friends? Oh Goodness you have no idea how different it is going to be for you, that is truly the good news here.
So rather than ever be afraid of the unknown or change, we ask you to come into that alignment with your magical inner child. To say ‘Dearest Magical Inner Child, I do not know how to be playful about this, I do not know how to be light about this, I do not know how to be innocent about this. Will you help me? They will always respond with love.
Is this a part of love? In relationship you want and need and deserve your innocence again, to truly open your heart and dance and sing and make love and all those perfectly wonderful moments that life is meant to be about. To come back to your worthiness, your deserving, to feel truly and fully ALIVE! Your magical inner child holds that for you and shares that with you. Ask them to love you and to help you to remember.
There is nothing more powerful than when you humble yourself to the wisdom within you and ask for help.
You’re knowing now that you’re not just your mind or your body but these are of course vibrational measuring devices, rudders that steer the ship, when your mind is in confusion, when your body is in exhaustion, ask for help from your magical inner child. You are their future. You are the co-creator of their dreams. You are the full flowering of their possibilities and desires for LOVE.
Your innocence is so powerful. But YOU are here to bring the something new, something different into your world. What’s the phrase here ‘without a vision the people perish’.
You are very connected, each and every one of you, to the vision of this earth, and the vision of this beautiful, sacred country, that all of you are a part of here and now, and for have been for more than a few previous lifetimes and may choose to be in the future as well.
Ireland has a purpose to fulfil in the world, it has a destiny, it holds a unique vibration of compassion and creativity, of being a voice for the heart of humanity and the earth, which it speaks about here once again.
And there are these powerful sacred places where you can go in your mind, in your imagination, or physically, literally however you like. In these journeys you can remember your worthiness, your deserving, your innocence and you can be humble and receptive in the face of power that is greater than what you in the moment can understand.
The power within you is ALWAYS GREATER than the power around you.
You will always know when you have made this shift because you will not fear tomorrow, you will not fear the unknown and you will not fear change.
You are the clay and the universe is shaping you in this lifetime of lifetimes, as our friend Abraham says you can either resist or go willingly but dear friends, you are going either way and that is the good news! Either way there is a growing, expanding and awakening sense within your self that you are going…somewhere unimagined, somewhere innocent and new.
All these wonderful changes that are happening in your world, they are once again reflections of self, nothing more and nothing less, your friend here Krishnamurti and many others have been saying for a long time, the Buddha and Yeshua Jesus ‘You are the world’ ‘See your reflection in your life’ ‘Fall in love with the echo’ . It’s the same ‘as above so below’ ‘as within so without’ there are signs in heaven and earth.
So anything, anything that is a part of your dance now from here on in, we ask you to take joyous responsibility, innocent worthy and deserving of all you are, and to play with it.
If you see something about – here’s a food shortage or there’s a problem here or there’s another bit of violence there. Can you bring the magical inner child to this situation and have compassion first of all for those that are creating the worst of it?
Can you play with it? Can you be a God, a Master, a Co-Creator in this world? Can you say ‘Yes I could see how that could be a reality and I could see how I could create or begin to focus a different possibility into this reality’.
As we’ve said before, we’ll say it again, it’s all about peace. Peace is the beginning and peace is the end and thus peace is the way. The way, the truth, and the light, and the peace within me…is the peace around me. What a lovely affirmation!
It’s all about peace, no matter how deeply you come to peace in your lives each and every day. With practice with your magical inner child you will find that this will be easier to do, and you will find yourselves giving yourselves greater permission to meditate, to pray, to truly go within and know, whatever that means to you. Because peace is Fun! Having access to inner peace creates the space for happiness, joy and fun to happen.
It is essential in terms of you taking your power back and you know how to easily and elegantly find and come to and come from your centre. It’s going to matter more, and more and not less in the years ahead dear ones.
Granting the permission, the reality and truth that I Am.
I Am Divine. I am Safe. I am Worthy. I am deserving of all I desire for my highest good and greatest joy, with good for all and harm to none, it is done!
The last thing we will say to you is simply this.
Anything and everything in your life that feels like it is a struggle, like you must force yourself, that you should, would, could, etc. Please look at these very closely, and ask your magical inner child if they cannot help you to find a more joyous, a more elegant and a more meaningful way?
We will close to you by simply pointing this out. That struggle, yes, it can create meaning and it must, in order for you to find your joy once again. But in this time of healing, growth and love, making meaning with struggle is not about being the victim, feeling powerless, being punished, feeling guilty, or any of those things.
So when you see struggle come up in your life and your looking for greater permission in that moment to find a better, more spiritual, more expanded, and more innocent way to create meaning, invite your magical inner child to help you and they will.
Joy is not spurious, not irrelevant, and not oh yes when you can fit it in – dear friends, joy is your bread and butter, the roof over your heads, joy is the car you drive, joy is with you in each and every breath, when you
Its going to sound too simple, its going to sound too easy, its going to sound too good to be true, as is said here for many in your world, that’s alright. But if it makes a bit of sense to you, then dear ones we have served our purpose here this evening.
We trust each of you to make the best decision you know how to, in each and every situation, and then absolutely to trust the situation to reveal the joy within it, its purpose, your elegance and dear ones, your destiny.
So with that magical inner child now most in your consciousness, clearly in your consciousness we ask the two of you just to sit and have a few moments together perhaps chat, to listen to, to blend with their energies, if they have some thoughts, and ideas and inspirations for you…to let that unfold. We’ll hold the space here.
Your future is within you already, and you find it by looking within and bringing it forth in your innocence, in your peace and in your joy.
Its not if only, it is here and now.

Using Wheels of Light To Create Meaning

You are here to celebrate the gift of life.

Millions of people are seeking and opening to a greater clarity
of being, a spiritual being, fulfilling and completing,
joyously and wondrously, in this lifetime of lifetimes,
a human experience, unlike any you have ever known.

Each and every one of you knows that you are here as a light worker,
a way shower, and therefore, that you are here to create meaning,
within those choices that you are inspired to make.

So know that as you allow yourself the gift of receiving,
wisdom or healing or insight or love or understanding or opportunity.

All of those things are about creating greater meaning: that you have the ability,
in every moment, to determine what everything or anything means,
what everything or anything means!

It’s wonderful to know who you are, and to know that the hardest part
of the journey is behind each and every one of you.

It’s wonderful to know that you are reaching for the stars
and we are reaching for you, and that you are never alone.

To just take this journey just one more step…we ask you to allow yourself to completely come back to your centre, to relax and release, and to let your higher self, your soul your spirit and all of your guides take you just one step closer now to what you are working on. We want to bring forth the wheel of light once again. A wheel of light you can imagine emanating from your heart and you can see it parallel to the floor, you can see it spinning in your aura.
This wheel of light may be of any colour golden or silver or white. We want you to spin your aura as a wheel of light and just take a gentle deep breath. Allow yourself to open and to feel your light body, to feel the energy around you and dear friends to feel yourself and to know yourself as spirit, as love and light. To let your physical, mental and emotional be more open and receptive to these higher vibrations, these higher energies, these more elegant and more efficient ways of creating what it is that you desire to have in your life and of course knowing that prosperity, abundance, all if that is absolutely beautiful.
Yes you are here to celebrate the gift of life whatever that may mean to you and dear friends each and every one of you knows that you are here as a light worker, as a way shower and therefore you are here to create meaning within those choices that you are inspired to make.
So know that as you allow yourself the gift of receiving in this time of great awakening whether it is wisdom or healing or insight or love or understanding or opportunity or indeed the Euros in your pocket and the numbers in your account. All of those things are always about creating greater meaning and that you have the ability in every moment to determine what everything or anything means, dear friends, what everything or anything means.
So we just ask you from this place of spinning your wheel of light now to offer this light to your friends and family as you take a gentle breath. That they could step into your circle here, your spinning vortex of energy in their own time and in their own way whenever they choose to and that you are here with them you are here for them and at a deeper level you are inviting them to awaken to remember and to dream a new dream. It’s wonderful to know who you are and to know that the hardest part of the journey is behind each and every one of you.
It’s wonderful to know that you are reaching for the stars and we are reaching for you, you are never alone. Your prayers your requests your desires are always felt and heard and understood and it’s more wonderful to know that you do not make the journey ever alone in your world, that you are calling forth millions in your time and space frame. Millions of people who are seeking and opening to greater clarity of being a spiritual being fulfilling and completing joyously and wondrously in this lifetime of lifetimes a human experience unlike any you have ever known. Enjoy the journey and we will meet again.

Abundance Meditation Oct 2008

So dear friends if you would journey with us for a few moments we are going to ask you to imagine in your beautiful mind’s eye that you are standing before a magnificent waterfall in a tropical paradise and dear ones that this waterfall is flowing powerfully and abundantly before you and that you are standing a safe distance from this beautiful magnificent sight.


And dear friends you hear the thunder of the water slapping against the stone and splashing all around you in this powerful spot where you stand. You are truly here to awaken to remember and to dream a new dream. To remember the abundance, the love and the powerful being that you truly, really are!

Take another gentle, cleansing breath.

So dear friends into this time you turn now away from the waterfall and you look upon this beautiful body of water wherein the waterfall runs off to, this beautiful lagoon or this lake or river dear friends and in this body of water your going to see the reflections of many of the ideas that you’ve been living, in this and other lifetimes. Your going to see the reflections of being many different characters in this story called life.

You are the giver, the receiver, the lover and the beloved, the teacher and the student, the healer and the one needing healing dear friends. The one that has great abundance and the one that longs for great abundance and all the roles that you would play in this wonderful creation story called life. You see the ones that you know and you see the ones that you may have imagined and your willingness to give yourself permission to remember, allows you the opportunity now to truly take your power back.

So in this sacred place we ask you to know that life is supporting you always. We ask you to acknowledge that no matter how it may appear to you, that Mother Earth and all the particulars that you need to live to grow and to blossom are coming into your life in as open and receptive a way as you will allow and dear ones if you are open and in agreement with that statement then go ahead and take another beautiful breath.

Letting life love you brings stillness to these waters and letting yourself love life invites you to be more of your true self, more of the spiritual being having and creating and inviting others to define themselves in this human experience. So dear friends we are going to invite the Divine Feminine to be a part of your experience now and in the magic of your imagination she is going to offer you a beautiful chalice, a magnificent holy grail, a cup that holds all of your desire. This cup is going to appear before you suspended in mid air and just allow it to be there as you take another gentle breath.

Dear friends you are transcending the illusions of the past, you are receiving the love of life as you, and dear ones you are reaching, sometimes elegantly, sometimes awkwardly, but you are reaching for a greater experience of your true self. There are 3 qualities that we ask you to desire to imagine and to receive for your world at this time.

The first quality is Trust.

That you would allow yourself to trust yourselves deeper and more powerfully than ever before; that you would allow yourself to understand that what is broken in the world, if anything is broken, is where humanity has put its faith and trust in ideas that no longer serve it. And it is looking everywhere for those who will remember what self trust is all about, so let that desire to trust yourself be in your cup right here and now and take a deep breath.

The second quality we are going to ask you to remember is Compassion.

Compassion for your world yes certainly of course. Dear ones you have always had compassion for your world. You are the lovers of life. You are the healers. You are the way showers. That has been the easy part; to be a giver, to be a nurturer, to care for others. But to open to having and receiving compassion for your Self, compassion for your needs, compassion for your desires, that has been harder, and we ask you in balancing humanity and yourself as the light workers of this time to let compassion likewise be placed in your cup and take a deep breath.

The third quality we ask you to receive is Love itself.

To really understand that there are no words, there are no limits, that it is the thing itself, the essence, the foundation, the purpose of all you are seeking; to give love certainly you are here for that and dear ones likewise to give love to yourself and thus to receive it. To see through the tears that begin in sorrow and end in joy that you are that which you are seeking. Whether is looks like a broken car or a chaotic family life or reaching for the dreams that have seemed too distant for too long. To love yourself enough to let life, and all that is, help you to say yes.

Take a deep breath.

So dear friends with this in your holy grail now we ask you to turn towards this magnificent waterfall and to step in. To step beneath this beautiful fountain of life that is pouring over these magnificent stones and to let it wash you let it purify you, let it cleanse you let it help you to release everything that needs and wants to be let go of.

The struggle, the fear, the uncertainty, the search for guarantees, the demand of proof, the caring of others opinions more than your own, all of it, fear of the unknown, all of it and anything else you would add to it.

Let the waters of life rain down upon you pour through you let them empty you out, and let yourself feel truly that you are the fountain of life once again, in flow, in purpose, in balance.

Now step through the waterfall here into the other side and find in the centre of this place in this cave that there is your Grail and dear ones your grail is flowing now the water of life from its own mysterious source.

You pick up this beautiful cup and you hold it now kneeling in an air of reverence and devotion to the divine within yourself, spoken or unspoken, and you place it in harmony and in balance with your heart chakra - take a deep breath, receiving its light receiving its grace, with your throat chakra – take a deep breath, receiving its light receiving its grace and with your third eye chakra – take a deep breath, receiving its light receiving its grace.

And Dear Ones…Now, in an instant, you and the cup of life, stand on the other side of the waterfall, and you stand before all your friends and family, all your guides, all the world, and it is here dear friends that you pour this cup into the water of life, and you invite them, your whole world, those you know and those you may never know to drink, to remember, to be free, as well.

Take a deep breath.

This cup, like the waterfall is eternal, and ever flowing, and ever giving, and ever knowing,

Dear friends you place this cup now in your crown chakra and this cup of light now becomes luminous and radiant as it shines its light, connecting heaven to earth, connecting source to its expression, outside of time, beyond space, in the infinite wisdom of love.

Where would my last fifteen years have led me if you and Dan hadn't been there showing me the way? Dear Friends,

Although I usually do not send out personal requests,
I am sending this out to my list because most of you know and love my dear friend and sister of my heart, Rio Watson.
I have just returned from a week with her and received her permission to send this letter out on her behalf.

Rio has been bravely and courageously dealing with breast cancer and was in the hospital last week. She is now home and under the care of Hospice and her husband, Dan. He has been by her side and a loving caretaker 24/7 for months- and in actuality, for all the years they have been together.

Whether you have known her personally or not, I lovingly ask that you please take the time to send her light, loving prayers and thoughts to serve her Highest good and the Highest good of All, in gentleness, Grace and ease. Although we may personally and collectively long for and very well create a miracle, we can not always know what is for another’s Highest good. It is not for us to ask why or to impose our desires and wishes upon another. Yet, we can intend to support whatever is for her Highest good and create a universal grid of love, compassion and support for her healing (however that takes shape) and transition. Together, we will create and facilitate a portal of light and love for her ascension…a stargate that will allow for greater light, love, learning, communication and assistance through dimensions.

Rio’s life path has been one of great service to All. She is a divine mother… dedicated and devoted to helping, teaching and healing thousands of people through the years, sharing the teachings of LaHo-Chi spiritual energy healing throughout the world. She and her husband, Dan, developed the LaHo-Chi Institute and as the three of us are the only certified instructors in the world, we have had a very close, loving and supportive relationship. Most of you have been, in some way, a part of our dreams and visions to take this amazing healing work out in the world. We have received the Grace and blessings of it, it has reshaped our lives for the better and we have shared it with others- and all because of Rio.

There are so many of us who are deeply grateful for the positive change Rio (and Dan) and the LaHo-Chi have made in our lives. The blessings are immeasurable and will continue to grow. Letter From Deepak Chopra

Elected officials are sent to Washington to govern but not to rule. This may sound like a question of semantics or at best a fine distinction. But rulership isn't a legitimate part of democracy. When a governing class develops in a democratic society, it loses contact with the people who elect it. In many ways America is burdened with such a class, which has amassed power over the past fifty years, until it arrived at a place where its right to rule goes almost unchallenged.

Who belongs to the ruling class? One might start with the wealthy lawyers who form an inordinate percentage of senators and congressmen, then move on to the corporations whose lobbyists write the very laws that are supposed to regulate corporations. Working hand in hand, these two blocs form a privileged class that feels free to ignore what the American people actually want.

An unexpected benefit of the Bush years is that the ruling class may have gone too far. A culture of corruption binds Congress and lobbyists to an unheard of degree. Bill after bill, earmark after earmark, has blatantly served special interests. Both parties are guilty of kowtowing to money and the corporations that dispense it with shameless abandon -- the buying and selling of political favors has never been so outrageous. Influence peddling, once a crime, has become the norm.

The ruling class also includes those who wield power without checks and balances. The disaster of the Iraq war can be traced in large part to a small cabal of neoconservatives surrounding the White House who decided to railroad Congress and the American people without consultation from anyone who failed to buy into their ideology. Under the cloak of national security, the advent of warrantless wiretapping, torture of captured enemies, secret prisons abroad, and a host of other infringements of the Constitution came about without discussion or advisement. A handful of self-styled rulers did what they wanted to because they could get away with it.

Finally, the present ruling class imposes a narrow religious ideology that grossly oversteps its rights. Right-wing Christians, the so-called values voters, constitute roughly 25% of the electorate. As such, their minority rights are protected in a constitutional democracy. But that's a far cry from pretending to be a majority and forcing their values on to everyone else. Unknown to the average citizen, the religious right has infiltrated every department of the executive branch by the use of civil-service appointments. On a broader basis, conservatism has become a litmus test for federally appointed lawyers and judges as well. A good example is provided by the new laws that demand voters to show government ID before they can enter the polling booth.

Previously, such IDs were not required (one only had to be listed on the voting rolls) and border on being unconstitutional. Yet a number of states have adopted such requirements, which seem on the surface to be a blatant form of intimidation, since blacks, Latinos, the poor and the uneducated would be the least likely to have IDs or to trust the government for demanding to see one. In every single case where such laws have been tested in federal court, Republican judges have supported these laws and Democratic judges opposed them. This rigid partisanship grew directly from the litmus-test standards imposed by conservatives and is shocking to long-time judicial observers. The days when a judge could change his philosophy over time or choose to align himself with liberals one day and conservatives the next, depending on the merits of the case at hand, seem to be forgotten.

The betrayal of democracy hasn't escaped notice, and the Democrats have promised, once they gain the White House, to sweep away the distorted policies of the right wing. Yet we can only watch and wait. The end of neoconservatives won't end the war. Nor will it depose sitting judges or weaken lobbyists or bring in a new class of congressmen who aren't beholden to moneyed interests. The entire government has become entangled in the problem, and it will take an awakened electorate to undo the harm that has been done already. The key to an optimistic, progressive America -- the America that threatens to turn into a dream of the past -- lies in a renewed belief in an open society and trust in the principles of democracy. Do you want to be governed or ruled?

Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize

Oct. 11, 2007 | What's world peace got to do with global warming? Perhaps everything. Or it will if things don't change fast -- if, in 10 or 20 or 40 years devastating floods and droughts displace millions of refugees and spur nations and tribes to desperate bloodletting. At which point, no one will have the slightest doubt why members of the renowned Scandinavian foundation thought former U.S. Vice President Al Gore was an obvious choice for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Gore is, quite simply, the indispensable player in the drama of mankind's encounter with the possibility of destroying the climatic balance within which our civilization emerged and developed.

As anyone who read the book or watched the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" knows, Gore has been troubled by and fascinated with the science of climate change since his undergraduate days at Harvard, where he first encountered the theory that carbon emissions are slowly causing the planet to overheat. He began holding congressional hearings on the subject the moment he hit Washington in the early '70s and has not let up since -- perhaps because he understood instinctively that it was not a question of whether changing the atmosphere's chemical balance would disrupt climate, but when, and how fast.

He recognized, too, that the incredibly hard task of turning around the world's energy economy would become impossible if we waited for global warming to announce its presence, stage left, with alarum and hautboys as Shakespeare might have scripted.

So for years he accepted the thankless role of Cassandra, the Greek prophet no one would heed. But unlike Cassandra he did not sit by to watch fateful tragedy unfold. Once, when I was particularly frustrated by challenges I faced in my job at the Sierra Club, Gore heard me out and replied: "Never, ever give up." That would seem to be his motto, as reflected in the thousands of speeches he has delivered, the Live Earth concert he built from scratch, the naysaying he has endured, the movement he inspired.

What's all that have to do with peace? Look at Iraq, Darfur or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- bloody sites that have engendered three Nobel Peace prizes. Twenty-first century conflicts seldom feature stable governments colliding, but rather collapsing societies attacking themselves. These are much harder to solve with diplomacy or peacekeeping troops. Prevention is the key.

The Nobel Committee has recognized this in recent years, awarding its prize to such previously unlikely winners as Iranian feminist Shirin Abadi, and Muhammad Yunus, a pioneer of microfinance for the poor.

A quick list of trouble spots that climate chaos could ignite would include:

* The Sudan and Darfur -- where the ongoing violence, fueled by drought and destitution, might be described as the world's first global-warming civil war.
* South Asia -- where India, China and Pakistan might well go to war over the shrinking snow melt from the Tibetan Plateau.
* The eastern Mediterranean, where Syria, Iraq and Turkey contest the Euphrates.
* The Chinese-Soviet border, where the loss of agricultural lands could force even more of the Chinese population north of the Amur.
* The gradually drying region around the Aral Sea -- Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan.
* Even Canada, Norway and the Soviet Union, whose governments are beginning to make bellicose noises about control of the suddenly ice-free Arctic.

In 2004, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai. She is not a general or president. She was founder of the grass-roots Green Belt Movement, which planted more than 30 million trees across the country, providing jobs, power and education to women in the process. In the Nobel committee's words upon awarding that prize: "Peace on earth depends on our ability to secure our living environment."

The committee apparently sees Gore in a similar light, as someone who has spent much of his career staving off conflicts by uniting strange bedfellows behind the common cause of protecting humanity's only home.

In the 20th century peace was something to be achieved after the horrifying bloodletting of world war began. In the 21st century, although the world faces a new era of turmoil, peace ultimately must be about identifying and resolving the sources of conflict before battles break out. That's why no one deserves the Nobel Peace Prize more than Al Gore.

Several years ago entrepreneur Richard Branson and Peter discussed with Nelson Mandela the obstacles to solving difficult conflicts facing the world. Their idea of a small, dedicated group of leaders, working objectively and without any vested personal interest in the outcome, began to develop and eventually grew into The Elders.

Nelson Mandela announced the formation of this new group, The Elders, today in a speech he delivered on the occasion of his 89th birthday. He was joined by founding members of the group, Desmond Tutu, Graça Machel, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter, Li Zhaoxing, Mary Robinson and Muhammad Yunus. Founding members, Ela Bhatt and Gro Harlem Brundtland were unable to attend.

Peter said, “In traditional societies, the elders always had a role in conflict resolution, long-term thinking and applying wisdom wherever it was needed. We are moving to this global village and yet we don’t have our global elders. The Elders can be a group who have the trust of the world, who can speak freely, be fiercely independent, and respond fast and flexibly in conflict situations.”

The Elders will be independently funded by a group of Founders.
