Sweetwater runs dry, Mabuhay Gardens to re-open Sept 7th
posted by Lil Mike
Marin's storied Sweetwater venue in Mill Valley closes down on August 31st with a farewell night featuring music from Noe street denizen and longtime local rocker Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express. The venue, in biz for some 30 years was an intimate spot where musical luminaries like Bonnie Raitt, Jimmy Scott, Jerry Garcia, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and countless local musicians captivated audiences in the co...

The first SF politician I ever met was Terence Hallinan back in the late 80's... Actually I also used to run into fellow Supervisor Harry Britt at a liquor store on Haight St now & again, but he wasn't really shaking hands, maybe just the late afternoon DT's...
My Hallinan meeting was at a SOMA discotech on Harrison St called City Nights, where one could just as easily catch a set by The Ramones or a case of the clap. Hallinan's rep as a fighter stems from his teenage years when his nick...

Lil Mike is great. He is this ball of energy. He is perpetual motion in action. Ask him a question and he give you a million one solutions to any given problem. He is sweet and helpful.
He has thousand and thousands of volumes of stories and everyone has their Lil Mike story.

Lil Mike has been an integral part of the SF music scene for the last 15 years or so. From his days as part of the Komotion collective, member of the Bedlam Rovers, and show promoter, to his brilliant Dv8r rants and Punk retrospectives, Mike has documented much of the local music scene on video tape and digitally for the last 15 years or so. He has a library of some of the best performances of that period. He also has a nice video/digital editing facility which is known as Event Magic ( www.eventmagic.com). Resourceful, gregarious, and highly energetic, Lil Mike has a wonderfully warped sense of humor. He is a stream of consciousness through the wasteland of our society.

Some of the same folks behind this summer's 40th Anniversary of The Summer of Love concert in Golden Gate Park are hosting an event at Longshoreman's Hall in San Francisco this Saturday Night.
Longshoreman's Hall, is the same venue where the notorious Acid Test's were held in the mid 1960's, and this concert is in that tradition. Join in on a special benefit fundraiser this Saturday nightwith spirited disciples of the 60's, old friends new friends, all carrying a torch for a special charity.
This unique "only in San Francisco" sort of benefit concert event is for the "Hope and Beyond" Student Service-Learning Project, which provides culturally sensitive educational services for students in the US and the people of India regarding HIV/AIDS Prevention and Testing. This project is especially crucial in India which is in the unfortunate position of rapidly becoming the number one nation with HIV/AIDS infections and is expected to surpass the African continent in the total numbers of infected individuals by the end of this decade.
Saturday's benefit concert at the historic venue near Fisherman's Wharf will raise funs that go to India to get AIDS testing and prevention programs rolling.

Amongst the performers participating in this benefit gig are Summer of Love survivors like Mike Wilhelm of The Charlatans and the remaining members of The Quicksilver Messenger Service. Members of the younger generation might want to check out the band Lane Four, a recent KFOX radio contest finalist featuring Gregg Allman's 14 year old daughter Layla. She's the co-emcee for the evening and student body president of her school in the Redwood City School District. The event is open for FREE for the first 100 + adult San Francisco residents pledging to be HIV TESTED, and $25 thereafter for all pledging HIV testing.

This Sunday Night @ The Makeout Room:
Lotsa Holiday Cheer, Beer, Personality Plus & Plenty Good Old Fashioned Live Music
My Pal Parker had this to say:
On Sunday, December 23rd, at San Francisco's Make Out Room, GIBBSMO is proud to present The Parker Brothers Christmas Spectacle. Please join us for a night of rocking holiday classics performed by the Parker Brothers and including their very special guests: Beth Lisick, Chuck Prophet, Stephanie Finch, Kelley Stoltz, Mark Eitzel, CVS, Tom Armstrong, Ralph Carney, Marc Capelle, Brian and Sandra Mello, Eric Moffat, Phil Crumar, Tippy Canoe and Spiral Stairs. Also featured will be the hilarious (and bawdy!) comedic stylings of Johnny Megget and Chris Portfolio, as well as classic holiday reading by Pete Simonelli.
There will be someone bi-polar dressed as Santa, a snow machine, decorations, a tree, drink specials and some other festive crap. The only thing missing will be your drunk uncle, and trust me, I will be channeling him all night.
A portion of proceeds will benefit the SF Food Bank and there will be a raffle featuring fabulous prizes from DEMA, Open Mind Music, Cha Cha Cha, Savers, RubyDolls, Event Magic, Lil Tuffy and anything else I can clean out of my garage and slap gift wrap on.
Tickets are available in advance thru the Make Out Room's website at: www.makeoutroom.com, or you can risk getting them at the door. Santa and Gary the Magical Jewish Unicorn informed me its probably going to sell out.
This is a dressy event, so act like you are appearing in court.
Thanks everybody. Happy Holidays and I hope to see you all there!
Cheers,
GIBBSMO
