tribe.net alternative?

<div>Hi folks!

one of the biggest topics I keep seeing around tribe.net is how it's not really operating at par. I know personally I have been having a difficult time logging in and posting.

so for your convenience, I have compiled a list of all the places you can find DCTribal and the like on the web.

first off, is our website - http://dctribal.com
this site is in the process of getting an overhaul. since DCTribal is an all volunteer organization, sometimes these adventures take a little longer than originally planned. (ps. if anyone wants to volunteer to help set up drupal, please drop me a note! mab at jaladrum dot org

a while ago, when we testing out alternatives to tribe.net, I created a Livejournal community - http://community.livejournal.com/dctribal/
if you have a LJ acct, feel free to join up! be forewarned, it's not very active...yet....

I personally tend to use the DCRaqs community in Livejournal land - http://community.livejournal.com/dcraqs/

on myspace there is the profile for DCTribal - http://www.myspace.com/dctribal
and there is the DCTribal Cafe profile and group - http://www.myspace.com/dctribalcafe
http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&amp;groupid=101880992&amp;Mytoken=154AA725-2C4B-40F2-B158488D8D482BE643541223

there is also a yahoogroup mailing list - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dctribal/
it kind of fell by the wayside when so many people joined tribe.net.

we also created a facebook group - (I can't seem to find a link)
it's not very active either.

does anyone have any suggestions for discussion sites?
(x-posted at most of the places mentioned above)</div>

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/mabjustmab/blog/861f71c2-5488-4584-b312-7f0df11b6327"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/907/c88/907c88b6-a13f-47a0-8834-32eaed9cd610.thumb" width="58" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>to start off with, I have a show tonight at Bound in DC. a Kinky Carnival themed event, and I'm hoping I can score a real Circus Boy there ;-)
(event details - http://dc.bound.org)

Pennsic is here. after having gone for 10 years, and missing last year, I decided to give this year a miss too. the reasons are many. the biggest one being money. the other being that there are so many other great events that I never go to because my vacation time is full up on pennsic. I keep going through moments of doubt. "if I could go for just a few days." "maybe I could stealth in" etc. I am missing all my buddies, and worry that they will all forget me if I don't make it out this year. ;-) still, I have to be strong on this.

this year, I think I would like to go to Dragon*Con. (anyone here go to that? drop me a line!) this spot seems ripe for the busker. and I'm a huge geek in many senses of the word. :-)

I have been busy working on tons of local projects and booking gigs. one of the things I'm rather proud of is the DCVariety blog I created. (http://dcvariety.blogspot.com). I have set it up for an rss feed if you get into that stuff. just check out the bottom of the blog for feed info.

and then yesterday I created a DCVariety Artists Backstage mailing list. it's a place where local performers can share resources and tips. I am hoping to keep it reserved for LOCAL (as in DCMetro area) artists. and it's a members only mailing list, so performers don't have to worry about spoiling the illusions for audience folk. swing by and drop me a line if you want to join - http://groups.google.com/group/dcVariety

as I am typing this, I have uploaded a cute video of my latest fire eating bit - you can check it out here - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=549179540581074170&amp;hl=en
I like it. needs work, but in general, I like this piece.

just a reminder, the best way to keep up with what I have going on is to check out my regular blog - http://mabjustmab.livejournal.com
I would post here more, but sadly tribe is always crashing.

well, that's the skinny. hopefully I will see some of my long distance friends at Triboriginal this year, or on one of my other jaunts around town. give me a call or drop me an email!

see you on the midway!

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/mabjustmab/blog/fbcdcb6b-9ed9-4929-ab63-428f06e4a61c"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/541/f8b/541f8b1c-f220-4a69-aab7-9bd456fc623c.thumb" width="60" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>this is the big one folks! if you catch only one show this month, make it this one!

one of the advantages to being a variety performer is that I get to hear about other variety acts in the area before other folks do. but this isn't about them. this is about me. and the next big show coming to town. and why the heck I'm acting so giddy about it!

Paolo Garbanzo, an old friend and an amazing performer, will be in town THIS FRIDAY! at the Palace of Wonders. As a fair warning, the Palace is not that big, I believe capacity is about 100, and we plan on selling out the house! Get there early!

Why should you go to this show? Well, besides the fact that you should trust me blindly, I can think of a few other good reasons.

Paolo Garbanzo is the only American to ever win the international jester competition. That makes him an official jester, in England. Now, he's never performed for the Queen herself, but he has performed for dukes and lords, in castles and festivals all over Europe.

If you like juggling, you may know him as Misha Karamazov of the Flying Karamazov Brothers (arguably the most well known juggler group in the world)

Love him or hate him, I can't argue with all that he has accomplished in the years that I have known him. getting his start as a geeky juggler boy tossing clubs in the park at college, to playing at Pier 39 in San Francisco, to touring with the Karamazov's, than being crowned Official Jester, all leading him back here, to Washington DC. for one. night. only.

There is very little in the world that can trump that. so, I will be seeing you at the Palace!</div>

    </a>
										<div>Hey folks!
it's time once again to use the internet brain trust. Some musician friends of mine are almost done recording their new album. it's taken them over 3 years to get it to the point that it's ready to be set free to the salivating masses.

unfortunately (dun dun duuunnnn), the hard drive that contained all of said music just died. they are desperate to get the data off the drive, but cannot seem to find anyone to do it for less than several thousand dollars. from what we can tell, they need a "static free room" to transfer the actual disks from the old hard drive to a new enclosure.

they have tried Best Buy/Geek Squad and Micro Center, but found the cost way to prohibitive.

I am recalling that somewhere out there, someone I know had it done for a LOT less. (only, I can't remember who!)

does anyone have any suggestions?
many thanks!

8 adult cats need home - Los Angeles area

<div>I have a friend who is in a very sad situation and needs to find homes for 8 adult cats in the los angeles area. if you could please repost about this it would be the best thing that you can do to help him out. even if we only get one cat into a new home from this, it will be worth the effort.

the cats are all healthy and have medical records. in fact, if the prospective adopters want to meet with the vet, that is absolutely doable (he's a friend of the family).

we really want to avoid placing them into a shelter and would prefer that they go to a good home.

<div>looks like my home computer has fallen from the mighty.
the explorer.exe is hogging the cpu, making everything take forever to load/run.

it has been struck down with some kind of malicious malware/virus who knows what.
I have done some research, but cannot seem to find the name of this virus.

Norton Anti virus has failed me. they want to charge me something like $23.00 a minute to have them talk me through removing it. which seems quite silly seeing how it was their software that failed me in the first place.

I could sure use some help. anyone out there know anything about malicious programs and how to find and remove them?

some possible solutions -
- post/email tips suggestions...
- phone call talk me through the fix
- come by and receive free booze and food in exchange for repair
- donate an old computer so that I may get online at home

I've been trying to deal with this for about a week.

help?
I am open to other suggestions too.</div>

    </a>
<div>Tonight at the Palace of Wonders there will be a very special Weirdo Show.

It's the Big Benefit Bonanza for Johnny and Charon (http://oddangel.com). That’s right, seminal members of the Palace family find themselves in dire need, and the Weirdo Show stands ready to help. At last year’s Palace Anniversary, Johnny was struck by a car which crushed his left leg.

In the intervening year, Johnny has endured too many surgeries to enumerate, and the responsible party has never admitted to having caused the accident.

So hurry hurry, you won’t want to miss a single moment of our astounding assortment of aberrations of nature and culture! And every penny goes to Johnny's medical bills.

one thing that Charon always said to me - "you're family".

Her selflessness has helped shape the dc sideshow, burlesque and vaudeville community into the amazing thing it is today!

Let's show her and Johnny that we all are, in fact, family.

Anyone who would care to help out can paypal a donation to Charon at oddangel dot com. She's on the road working, and will not be able to be at the Palace of Wonders tonight, so she's sent a message to be read to the assembly.

Letter from Charon Henning

Hello to all~

Thank you for coming. I am so very sorry I cannot be here with all of
you and thank you personally. I am on the road earning money to keep
bill collectors happy and fed. We have a lot of them to feed these
days. At then end of next month, Johnny will have been disabled for an
entire year. It's crazy that it's been this long. Two doctors have
still not been able to patch his leg back together. One of them even
left bone protruding through the front of his leg for over seven
months until the new doctor took over. The new doctor will be
performing a third surgery on Johnny tomorrow afternoon, bringing our
grand total thus far to somewhere around 6. We've lost count, to be
honest. It is a bone graft to replace nearly three inches of bone that
have been lost to damage and infection. We hope it will be the last
surgery needed.

Johnny is in a great deal of pain as I'm sure you can imagine. What
you probably can't imagine is how incredibly frustrated and angry this
entire situation has left all of us. We cannot sue DC due to some sort
of statutory limitation of six months from the date of the incident.
The one lawyer we contacted during that time flat out refused to help
until a citation on the accident report had been taken care of.
Problem was, we couldn't get DC to locate any citation, or any
accident report. As of today, they tell us there is no accident report
and that no incident was recorded as occurring on that night at all.

As far as DC is concerned, none of this ever happened and we have no
recourse, not being able to afford a lawyer anyhow, regardless of any
statutes that may or may not apply.

Johnny has returned to work for his old plumbing company working
dispatch, the only sort of work he is allowed by his doctors and
bosses to do, and coping with the pain of having his leg beneath a
desk all day. Yesterday a customer called his superiors to complain
that he'd made a noise on the phone that suggested he was in pain. He
was actually reprimanded by the head office for it. If it weren't for
the fact that we need the insurance to keep our heads above water I
would have told him to quit a long time ago. I wouldn't mind
supporting him at all, but I would never be able to afford the full
medical bills on top of everything else. My job does not offer me
health insurance at all. Social security finally came through this
past February, but they pay us about a quarter of what his previous
wages were per month.

I don't tell you all of this to elicit sympathy. I tell you all this
in order to help you understand that you, all of you, are doing
something that no one else has been willing to do: You are helping an
honest hardworking man get back on his feet. You are helping us to
keep our home over our heads. You are caring enough to give something
of yourselves to someone having a very difficult time through no fault
of their own. We have called our Congressman about all of this, gone
to the media, and contacted two lawyers. None of them have helped. All
of you here tonight join with friends and family of ours who have
already extended what assistance they can, in truly making a
difference in the lives of some fellow human beings. You are stepping
up to tell us we matter, and that you share our frustration with the
system and its complete failure to assist in righting some very
grievous wrongs.

There are no words to thank you for this. Just know that our hearts
are very full of gratitude for your willingness to share what you have
with us in a time of genuine need. You are showing us that there
really are people out there who still believe that hard work and
honesty are worth supporting, most especially in people who cannot
currently support themselves.

Thank you, one and all. Thank you.

    </a>
<div>last night was spent looking for things. I didn't find ~any~ of the things I was looking for, but I did find a stash of old photo cds (from 2002 and earlier).

this was before digital cameras were everywhere. this is from the golden age of "you don't know what your picture looks like till you shell out the $ to have it developed".

most of the pictures have my monkey in them. they were documenting my trip through faires and travels. some places covered include but are not limited to: St. Louis Faire, Chicago, Asheville, Darabukistan, Gettysburg, King Richard's Faire, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ragnarok (XII).

some of the people captured in these pictures include but are not limited to: Onca, Draven and their baby baby Caelis (with his styling baby pompadour), the lovlies from Zafira, Turku, No-Bones from Mandara, Talanesea, Gecko, Daryth, Denys, Paolo, Vince with long hair, Rickles the Pickle fool, Queen Bea, Valerie (of Wylie Woven Wire), Paul Ash, Kazooki, a short haired and orcified Morgana and Taog, niveK, and more!

it was a trip to look at these pictures. there must have been over 200 pictures. I loaded some of them up on my flickr page, but made them friends only....if you want to see them, you would have to make a flickr acct. (oooh, rough - if you already have a yahoo acct, then you already have a flickr acct.)</div>

    </a>
										<div>a love affair.

I took some photos of my "drunken davul" for ding0, (and in a round about way for thibeaux). I loaded them onto my flickr acct so it would be easy to share.

today when I logged in, this was the first photo I saw. and my heart did a little thump. you know the one. that flutter in your chest you feel when you see someone you have a crush on. that giddy feeling you get when you know you are going to Disney World. that sharp intake of breath when you receive a pleasant surprise.

yea.

seeing this baby stirred me.

I need to bring him out more. I need to practice more...(I need a place to practice - if Greta drove the neighbors over the edge, what do you think this would do???)

look at it. isn't it beautiful.

I miss him. he wants to play. I am open to suggestions.</div>

And, of course, your talker for the evening, Professor Sprocket with his pitches, ballies and dings, presenting ten big acts for ten little dollars! And remember, every dime goes to help our very own Johnny and Charon! Named as "One of the Top Ten Reasons To Go Out During the Week" by the Washington Post, the Weirdo Show brings you the very finest in variety entertainment, all set in the sulfurous glow of the Midway of the Palace's own Museum of Oddities. In the words of the Washingtonian: "Now how can you pass that up, huh?" We'll see you at the Palace, pal!

    </a>
<div>	the clash - Straight to hell. that song will never get old. when I hear that song, something stirs in me.

this weekend at the hafla, I had the opportunity to play with paul ash. and he brought his hurdy gurdy. it was wonderful to play along. and as we would play, all the licks and bridges and changes came back to me. I was suddenly back 8 years ago when we used to spend all day, every day, at pennsic busking. it made me very happy.

the drum love didn't end there. Thibeaux asked me to teach a drum workshop for him and some of his buddies. I was a little rusty, but it was great. it was good to get thinking about the rhythms in new and different ways. for me, teaching helps me learn more. I have noticed how everyone has different ways that they absorb information. I am working on broadening my information presentation. and I am looking forward to teaching the next class.

I was reminded that the drum is good.

on my way home from the workshop, I had pick up some milk for my coffee today. at whole foods they were selling artichokes for $2.50 each. they were beautiful things. perfect. big, fat, green. I totally splurged. last night I ate artichoke and watched Howl's Moving Castle.

and I realized that I felt good.
and I wanted to share some of that content feeling.

<div>Less than one week to go! and I'm getting giddy and excited.

I have collected TONS of items to sell/swap. stuff folks have never seen before, stuff that might be considered artifacts from ages past, stuff that might be a little hard for me to part with (but I would love to see worn again).

I'm also might have a few musical surprises for folks....muahahah.

also, we still have a few volunteer slots open. some of the volunteer options include -

set up - arrive at 3:30 and help set up tables, chairs and decoration.
sign-in table/welcoming committee - 1 hour shifts between 4 - 7 pm
clean up/load out - 7:00-7:30

perks for volunteering include (but are not limited to):
* No cover charge to get in
* Getting to meet folks as they come in
* You get to say you are part of the crew!
* volunteers make things happen, and that makes volunteers COOL!
* for the folks that help set up, you get to look at the stuff for sale first!
* cool stickers that show your DCT pride!

give as much or as little as you like! that's the joy of being a DCTribal Volunteer!

<div>it's true, it's been ages since I've been on tribe.net for more than 30 seconds!
I've been picking up some odd work here and there, and it has kept me from the computer for extended periods of time. and for a social butterfly like me, that can mean a bazillion (technical term) emails that I have to sort through.

waxing and waning. lots of things do it. :-)

I am catching up, and finding out about a lot of great stuff happening around town! looks like things are going to start swinging again soon! you had your lull!!!

feel free to pipe up here, or better yet, call me! and let me know what's been shaking with you.

I should add that the picture is from the pile of bananas I mashed to make my first ever loaf of banana bread. the recipe called for 2 1/3 cups mashed overripe bananas, and when I had that, I found I had one banana left over. well, it was a sad banana until I let it join it's siblings in the process of getting squished and mixed and baked into a loaf.

some bananas are really sick puppies.

coming soon! a post with more content! (we all say that.......only time will tell)

Mab's Yard Sale - PREVIEW!!!

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/mabjustmab/blog/95309bd6-1722-450f-beea-09537c963cb4"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/a8e/147/a8e1476a-406c-4a05-a10f-83c399ad514f.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>coming soon! Mab's Yard Sale!
Why?

- I have tons* of stuff. *(not actually weighed)
- a lot of it I'm not using any more.
- I need money.
- some folks out there might like the things I no longer use and would like to give me money for them.

what better solution than a virtual yard sale?

some of the nicer items include:
- a stunning victorian corset,
- some awesome clip/hair falls (with skulls and beetle shells),
- some of my weavings and
- tassels,
- scarves,
- costume bits,
- painted masks as well as
- some incredible beaded necklaces and earrings my sister made.

Be the first to preview some of the amazing items available! - http://flickr.com/photos/jaladrum/sets/72157603549664402

I'm still trying to get the camera flash settings just right to best capture the correct color. and some of the jewelry is especially challenging because of the high reflection of the glass and semi precious stones.

at the moment, everything is "make an offer", with one notable exception: the blue Victorian corset. it cost me way to much money (approx $250-300) to take anything less than $150, which is a steal, considering I only wore it 1.5 times.

if you have any questions or comments, post here or you can email me at jaladrum@gmail.com

check back often! I will be adding more items and taking down the sold ones as things develop.

*** I'm still checking out my online photo hosting options. it was a toss up between Picasa and Flickr. I went with Picasa because I already have tons of stuff on my flickr page. but what I want to know is, is it my imagination that picasa is much much slower than flickr? should I go use the flickr for the yard sale? I don't know....

A site for the collection and possible reunion of Pittsburgh's dropped glove

onecoldhand.com is a project that connects the Pittsburgh community through one unfortunate event - the loss of a glove. The website creates a method for dealing with the conundrum of finding these lost articles. Do you leave it and hope the owner comes back to find it? Do you pick it up? Throw it away? With onecoldhand.com, the abandoned object now becomes a symbol of benevolence and hope."

<div>upcoming.org groups - good for promo, good to keep up with other cool stuff in town!

If you have a yahoo email address, you automatically have an account.

this seems to be an excellent place to post events. I have started a group specifally for DCTribal and another, more general group, for any interesting event in DC (including but not limited to Vaudeville, burlesque, sideshow, bellydance, fringe festivals, art openings, syncronized swimming, flash mobs, regional burnning events, hoop spin jams, and much much more!

dctribal - http://upcoming.yahoo.com/group/3978/
DC Underground - or DC Counter Culture http://upcoming.yahoo.com/group/3979/

what makes this a good site? well, I know that the washington post "going out gurus" and "dcist" both use this as a source for upcoming events. if we post an event here, chances are better that it will get noticed by a publication.

they also have widgets that automatically feed to your website! love it.

and they are partnered with Flickr (through yahoo) so you can have your event images auto feed from there.

I love how it's all connected....

if you are already on upcoming.org, please add me as a friend - http://upcoming.yahoo.com/user/84616/</div>
