New Mix - "Rhythmic Picnic"

<div>Greetings, fellow chillophiles!

I have uploaded a new mix to check out called "Rhythmic Picnic". In January I was invited to play the opening set at Club Zanzibar in Santa Monica for the record release party for "Chime", the new compilation from Ball of Waxx Records (http://www.ballofwaxx.com/). The comp features loads of West Coast-and-beyond talent from many up-and-coming producers, which inspired me to explore a realm of chill that I'd always collected but never played out - sort of a more mellow IDM/minimal realm. It was great fun to work with these tracks, and this mix is a reflection of that exploration. I hope you enjoy it!

The mix is uploaded at a bitrate of 256 VBR, but I will also have a limited supply of mastered CDs available over the coming weeks. These CDs will feature custom artwork from the love of my life, Dave De Anda. If you see me at Full Moon, or out and about somewhere, and would like a copy, please come up and say hi. First come, first served. If you feel moved to donate something to cover our costs, it's most appreciated. The mix on my site is, as always, free to download as often as you like.

You can grab the mix here: http://www.medicmaggie.com/djmaggie

Many of the tracks featured are produced by friends or friends of friends. A little dub, a bit of psychill, a smattering of trip hop, and a whole lot of love. It's mellow but danceable.

Thai fish cakes with sweet chili dipping sauce

<div>Can you say...YUM? This one's a keeper, folks.

Ingredients:

250g boneless fish fillets, chopped
4 spring onions, chopped
2 cloves garlic crushed
2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander
1 egg
1 tablespoon Thai fish sauce
2 teaspoons chili sauce
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lime rind
1 tablespoon lime juice
1/2 teaspoon chopped chili
1/2 cup rice flour
oil, for shallow frying

Method:

   1. Process the fish, spring onions, garlic, coriander, egg, sauces, lime rind and juice, chili and rice flour in a food processor for 60 seconds or until finely chopped and mixed.
   2. With oiled hands, shape the mixture into small patties. Heat 1-2 cm oil in a pan and cook the patties over medium heat for 2-3 minutes each side or until golden. Drain well and serve with sweet chili sauce, if desired.

For dipping sauce: mix sweet &amp; sour sauce with chili paste to taste.</div>

O Vietnamese food, how I love thee

<div>Last night I masterminded a dinner party for 6 friends and mined the depths of my Vietnamese cookbook for our menu. It was a phenomenal success and a truly collaborative effort, which adds that little extra somethin-somethin to the whole experience.

The menu:

Pressed rice logs with toasted sesame seed &amp; sea salt dust
Rice pancakes with shredded shrimp &amp; scallion oil
Cabbage &amp; egg stir-fry
Rice noodle bowl with stir-fried tuna
Coconut sorbet

The occasion was to honor our friend Donnie as she was back from Chicago for a brief week. Since I'm still somewhat new to Vietnamese cooking, yesterday was a flurry of activity, driving to 4 different markets to try and find the ingredients, and I must have called my mother 8 or 9 times to ask this question or that. (My Mom loves to cook Vietnamese food and is my biggest source of inspiration for my own culinary adventures). With all the goods ready to go, I invited a couple of other friends to join early, and together with my 2 roommates and I, we managed to serve dinner at a fashionably late time of 9pm.

I absolutely adore the combination of flavors in this kind of cuisine. The balance between sweet, salty, sour and spicy is the ultimate goal in almost every sauce. The freshness of the ingredients comes through in every bite and you can't help but feel like you're treating your body right, even if you feast upon it until you're full. Don't worry, you'll be hungry again in a few hours.

I could have been easily overwhelmed by the ambition of this meal and its legion of prep work, but thanks to the capable hands of my friends, and lots of delegation, we had great fun assembling everything, even as crowded as we were in our kitchen. Our island rocks. Every kitchen should have an island.

Great food, divine company, sublime experience. A tour de force evening.</div>

										<div>Greetings, and happy new year to you! I am happy to announce that I have a new mix up on my site for you to check out. It's called Champagne and Red Wine. It's cocktail-party music, designed for a holiday party hosted by my photography school last month. 80 minutes of jazzy, dubby lounge grooves intended to keep your head nodding. This is great crossover music, slightly mainstream but with a solid underground edge. It's family-safe too :)

    </a>
										<div>I've finally gotten 2 new mixes up on my Website which are available for download. One is called Start From Scratch - it was recorded live at Moontribe's 14-year anniversary gathering when I played a sunset set. I also have uploaded my sunrise set from Tropical's first campout which took place in June. Both mixes were made using Ableton Live, my new favorite piece of gear.

You can download both of them from: www.medicmaggie.com/djmaggie or, if you'd like to stream Start From Scratch, head on over to my WaxDJ page: www.waxdj.com/maggie - tracklists at both locations.

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/maggyver/blog/b47f5cfe-6176-4fc4-be42-4af053d98fe7">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/9c4/2f2/9c42f220-8b56-43ae-be9d-a4461a9b500c.thumb" width="65" height="40" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>It's that time of year - time for my next quarter of photography school at SMC. This quarter I'll be taking a color printing class, aka color theory, which is another darkroom class like my last one. This time I wised up to the staggering difference between crunching through a 6-week quarter (winter/summer) and a leisurely 16-week quarter (spring/fall). Same curriculum, more time to complete it.

I'm looking forward to immersing myself back into that world of photography again. I strayed a little from it this past spring and summer when I didn't get into the class I wanted for the spring. Instead I found myself blessed with a very active DJ schedule, allowing me to explore that channel of creativity for a while. I had a blast, but at some point I realized that when I was heading out to a party to play a set, I somehow had a really difficult time getting into the headspace I need to be able to shoot pictures. Consequently, I lugged my camera equipment with me dutifully to every party and it sat untouched for the majority of the time. I miss that outlet. It heals me in a profound way whenever I lose myself behind the lens.

So...I'm dusting off the tongs, the apron, the other miscellaneous darkroom supplies...getting my notebook and backpack ready...taking a deep breath before I take the plunge back into the visual from the audio. I'm hoping this class will get me up to speed about color balance in my shots so I can have some prints made and, gulp, maybe have a show of my work at some point soon. I didn't want to take that on until I felt like I had a better grasp of how the images translate from the camera to the screen to the paper. It's full steam ahead.

Oh, and in preparation for the onslaught of homework assignments, I managed to process all the shots I've taken this past spring and summer and have uploaded 11 miscellaneous shots to my Flickr page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maggyver/ I'm really happy with some of these - I had actually forgotten I'd taken some of them so it was a sweet discovery.</div>

A birthday of epic proportions

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/maggyver/blog/0620796f-6c68-403a-aa7d-34ec95dad409">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/5ee/8ed/5ee8edf5-c440-4765-a2b8-12ae738eb7ec.thumb" width="65" height="58" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I've always enjoyed the birthdays that get extended a little - a few one on one celebrations with good friends, plus maybe a little jaunt out of town to less frenetic places than our dearly beloved Big Bad City. This year, however, ended up exceeding my hopes more than I ever could have anticipated.What a grand time it was. Deep, gracious thanks to everyone who participated.

My actual birthday was Sunday May 6. On Thursday 5/3, Vishal and I flew out to the Big Island of Hawaii for a long weekend and stayed with dear Sprocket in Hilo, a consummate host if I ever knew one. The rainforest region just South of Hilo, called Puna, has already captured my heart, and returning there was like a homecoming of sorts. Vishal had never been to Hawaii so there was an added sense of delight from viewing it all through uninitiated eyes. We rented a car and drove through many of the beautiful spots I remembered from my previous journeys there. The Red Road, Opihikao Road, the Pahoa-Pohoiki Road...such gorgeousness I've rarely seen anywhere else in the world. Divine nourishment, indeed.

Sprocket had plans underway for a new monthly or bi-monthly dance event called Planet Zulu which was to take place Saturday 5/5 at Kalani, the local yoga retreat center which has been host to the weekly Ecstatic Dance community gatherings on Sunday mornings (www.kalani.com). Kalani itself is a beautiful place to spend time. Sprocket invited me to play an opening set of ambient-into-gentle-beats before he unleashed the dancer in all of us, so I finally had the privilege to play a set for some of the grooviest dancers I've come across anywhere outside my own community here in L.A. That was a real treat, but what put the icing on the cake was that Sprocket had graciously reserved several lodge rooms at Kalani for all of us party helpers to stay. I'd never stayed overnight at Kalani before and it was as lovely as I thought it would be. The party was over by 10pm and after helping to break down and get settled into our rooms for the night, we all took a midnight stroll down the hill and across the Red Road to a point on the cliffs where we could watch the moon rise on the ocean and celebrate my birthday. Was I dreaming? Was this already the best birthday I've ever experienced?

The answer, a resounding YES, became clear the following morning when, after waking up and soaking in the hot tub before a delicious breakfast, we trundled back down to the Ohana Center where the weekly Ecstatic Dance was happening. This happens every Sunday for the surrounding community there and in the 18 months since I was last among the community, it warmed my heart to observe how much more SOLID the sense of community had become. Having been a participant and witness to the growth and development of my own community here over the course of the last 11 years, I can see clearly the signs of growth and development in other intentional communities and the one which has developed on the Big Island is as beautiful as ever. As I danced my birthday away, I closed my eyes and felt such a wellspring of gratitude and joy that my eyes filled with tears and I kept thinking, "It doesn't get any better than this." The rest of the day was spent frolicking along the coast and in the jungle with dear friends old and new.

After another day in paradise, it was time to return to the mainland, and after emerging from the relative isolation of the rainforest, I found I had 6 birthday wishes on my voicemail, three of which were serenades. What a perfect way to be reminded of the love of good friends. We got home late Tuesday night and had just two days of city life before it was time for the other birthday weekend to get underway. Prior to the Hawaii trip being planned, I had invited several close friends to join me in a little photography and spa excursion to my parents' farm in Santa Ynez Valley for the weekend. It was a magical weekend of lounging by the pool, delicious food, hikes to natural deep emerald swimming holes, and even a small dance party on my parents' patio, where we coaxed my stepdad out to shake his booty like he'd never done before. A lovely and altogether different kind of weekend than the one before, but together they made up the most enjoyable birthday I can remember in recent times. Photos from these trips to follow on my Flickr site.

What can be a better way to celebrate another year of existence on this planet than to travel around it a little, enjoying good cheer and natural beauty in the company of loved ones? I'd say that gets my vote for a pretty perfect birthday.</div>

I'll be playing the opening set from 9:30-11 on Tuesday March 20 at the Mor. This will be my first time playing there and I'm really excited! I have some yummy sweet beats in store for whoever can make it out. After I play, DJ Dandelion will lay down some wicked grooves and Patricio to follow - so come on out and shake your booty with us!</div>

										<div>In December I visited the Getty Villa for the first time. What an amazing place that is! I was drawn to the stunning use of shadow and reflection throughout the architecture. If you're so inclined, I invite you to come and have a look: www.flickr.com/photos/maggyver/</div>
