Kim is not just an excellent magician or costumer. Very few people know this, and I am placing myself in imminent danger by even mentioning it, but she also does espionage work for a Maharaja, which is how she is so well educated, and did I mention she speaks over 450 languages? I only know this because I overheard a conversation she had with a with a large and thickly dressed foreigner, and was hiding in the bathtub when he arrived. I heard a noise just now.... the hairs are standing up on my neck...I think I'd better go.....

Kim makes things. Beautiful things. Some of these things have a home in my costume closet.

She's a lovely person and extremely talented. I'm honored to be considered her friend.

Kim is my favorite cousin and she rocks my world. But she has faults....She doesn't visit Alaska often enough, She doesn't stay at Family Reunions long enough, She won't marry me because she is my cousin, I once saw her drop a ball (or was it a knife) while juggling.

Inside Out

I was going to post this in Tribe, but Tribe is down so am going to place it here before going to work.

--------------------

Bonnets are all the fashion and all the rage in the mid-1850s. They are in all the fashion plates and engravings, but when walking the streets of Dickens they are sadly rare. Do people no longer care about being fashionable? Dear me, let us hope otherwise.

Perhaps, some people just have a crazy future forward fashion sense and don't realize how charming and utterly fabulous bonnets are. Or maybe they would love to wear a bonnet, but cannot seem to find a milliner that carries that particular bonnet.

So, to help remedy the bonnet shortage in a small way, I have figured out how to convert straw hats into bonnets and am offering a small number of them at a discounted price of $40 each to participants or Dickens Fair regulars.

"Straw?!" You say. "Straw isn't built to last." How true, but then a bonnet made of bricks would be very tiring to wear.

"Are those artificial flowers made in China?" Maybe. But please don't buy a bonnet in hopes that licking the flowers will bring about some sort of date rape drug trance. And yes, the trims may get dinged and/or fall off especially if you try to use the bonnet to catch fish or if fishy sorts of men accidentally sit upon them.

"But what will the colors look like in Dickens light?" Good question.

"$40?! Forget that, I could make it myself." Ah, very good idea. Here are images of the steps to create one yourself: http://www.kimyasuda.com/costumes/strawbonnet.html.

Bonnets $40/each

Straw hat base covered with lace and fabric. Trimmed with artificial flowers and feathers. 4" ribbon ties. Some sewing was involved with the rest hot glued.

If you'd like to purchase one of these bonnets, please let me know which one and message your name and fair name. I plan to be at Dickens Fair this Saturday December 8th.

1. Jade and Red. Straw bonnet covered with jade no wale corderoy with red 4" ribbon, black lace front, red carnations, red holiday pick, and red feather.

2. Charcoal and Lilac. Straw bonnet covered with charcoal gray/black cotton velvet with black lace front, lilac 4" ribbon, pink and white floral on inside brim, grape pick, and purplish feather.

3. Charcoal and Red. Straw bonnet covered with charcoal gray/black cotton velvet with black lace front, red 4" ribbon, red rose, red feather and red roses on inside brim.

4. Charcoal and Silver. Straw bonnet covered with charcoal gray/black cotton velvet with black lace front, silver 4" ribbon, white feathers, blue/purple flowers, and purple floral on the inside brim.

Just in case you want to play along at home... Some of my coworkers and I decided instead of wearing the same color or something to work, we should have a Dress Like a Lumberjack Day.  So on Wednesday we are going to encourage people to wear flannel shirts and jeans to work.  If you want to dress like a lumberjack Monty Python style, make sure it doesn't defeat your work dress code.

Fixing a dripping faucet by replacing o-rings included the use of a rubber mallet at my house.

Also, none of the three turnoffs underneath the sink actually turn off the water to the faucet.

"Lenoir said mammalian taste receptors evolved in an environment lacking in sugar and so were not adapted to the high concentrations of sweets found in the modern diet. Excess sugar could increase levels of the brain chemical dopamine, she said, leading to a craving for sweets."

Mmmm... sugar.  I can taste a big spoonful of brown sugar melting in my mouth right now.

I'm considering trying some west coast swing dances in the east bay area.  I'd be more likely to go if I knew if other people were going and/or if there might be crash space available.  Anyone swinging this weekend?

Next Generation's dance is at Allegro Ballroom, Emeryville on Saturday 6p-10p (or 6-midnight depending on which website) $12

Bayside Swing at Just Dance Ballroom, Oakland on Sunday 7-10:30 $9

Edit:  Bayside Swing is not until Nov 18th, so only thinking about Sat now.
