My Testimonials

November 7, 2005
I just realized I never worte a testemonial for Mari, hmm.
I want everyone to know I think of all the artist I know who are still living and whom I think actually have enough artistic vision to warrent important notice of their work, Mari ranks in on a list of three people. Her work is more important than most of the people who see it realize and that is why you should all pay closer attention. I keep telling her in person how she should change her work, but we both know it is perfect.

Broken-hearted comic books...
a reservoir of empathy.
Hair like dark volcanic glass,
her lipstick put on by an artist.

Dreaming of a skinny nicotine-
addicted dog, if not a
lovestruck squid... she has a sexy
hidden side reminding me of
Mata Hari: hottie Mari.

She would give the women's movement
the shirt off her back, and carry an ancient
typewriter up Nob Hill.

MariNaomi is a cute cool chick with some great funky creativity. Just don't get her talking about "porn clowns" - it will scar you for life.

Mari is open to everything there is in the world. As accomplished as she is as an artist (and she is), she is still growing and learning, using what's useful and discarding what isn't.

She's down to earth, genuinely sweet, the brightest of lights, and the most righteous disciple in the ministry of cool.

Mari is such a dynamite friend that if there were a candy shortage in the nation, I would let her lick the the chocolate off my fingers after I polished off my last Little Debbie Snack Cake.

Mari's presence tends to send those around her into stratospheric levels of funkability. And she does it so naturally. As for myself, I don't know why it took me so long to meet Mari, but now that I have, I can't imagine my life without her in it.

Go see Mari's artwork! She adds a feminine touch to Gary Larsons (far side)point of view!

Mari is one of the cutest and sweetest artist out in San Francisco. I love her art pieces! I'm so glad to have met her and her parents at the Dragon Bar for my very first local art show. Awesome pieces @ Place Pigalle. Please check out her art show! You'll always feel welcome with Mari's glowing smile.

Dude.

After I voted I got this cool red sticker that says...well, that I voted. The polls were virtually empty, and NOBODY on the street was wearing a cool red sticker. What up! Doesn't anybody care?

My weekend shows were so much fun!

I’m attaching a photo (taken by Kimberly Foster) from Saturday at the Studio Gallery because it’s so darned cute. And follow this link to see photos from Sunday’s live painting show at the de Young Museum:

The exhibit will be up for a couple weeks at the Kimball Gallery. Go see it if you're in the neighborhood!

Ya know…If you haven’t gotten your copy of Estrus Comics Issue 4 yet, you’d better get on the ball before they all fly off the racks like hot cakes. Not that hot cakes should be stored on racks per se, but maybe that’s why they fly off of them so quickly. And Estrus is just as tasty as a hot cake! Don’t believe me? I don’t blame you, as I’m not exactly impartial on the subject. But check out Estrus 4’s very first review (you’ll have to scroll down a little):

Hello there,

How are you? I'm doing great, thanks. A little tired, but in a good way, like the kind of tired you get after you do something really fun like dancing all night (not like the kind of tired you get when you're throwing up all night). I've been plugging away at my graphic novel, Kiss & Tell. I even self-published some of the stories in the form of Estrus 5, which has so far been getting some pretty nice reviews. Take a look:

Click here to read the Comics Reporter review.

Click here to read the Daily Crosshatch review.

Let me know if you want a copy, or check it out here on my website. I'm selling them for $5 apiece ($7 each internationally). They're not in a lot of stores just yet, but I'm getting to it. You can pick one up at select San Francisco retailers, such as the Comix Experience (but without the cool, screen-printed cover), STUDIO Gallery, and in a couple weeks at Giant Robot (yeah baby!).

On the art front, I've been winding down on the exhibitions. They're just so much work, and honestly I'd rather be making art than showing art! But I just couldn't resist when my favorite local gallery had their annual call for the "tiny" group show (and when I say "tiny," I'm talking about the art, not the number of artists in the show--Jen told me there are over a hundred! Wow!)

Here are the pieces I put in the show:

Click here to see 2 Bonobos.

Click here to see 3 Bonobos.

And here are details about the show where you can buy them for super cheap:

November 7 to December 23, 2007

"tiny"—A group show at STUDIO Gallery

Featuring small pieces under $400 by local artists

1718A Polk Street (between Clay and Washington)

San Francisco, CA

Opening reception: Saturday, Nov. 10, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

4th Anniversary party: Saturday, Dec. 8, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Now, because I've decided not to do a lot of shows for a while, my apartment is crammed full of artwork that is simply rotting away. I don't know if you know this, but I have a special place on Flickr where I post photos of all my available artwork. Click here to take a look. It should give you an idea of how little room I have in my apartment right now.

This is somewhat related: There's a guy who keeps driving by my apartment with a megaphone, announcing his candidacy for mayor. It's really annoying because he usually comes by when I'm napping or talking on the telephone, and all he ever says is, "Vote for me. Vote for me." But he never gives me a good reason to do so. Anyway, I've been awfully tempted to throw something out the window at him, and all I really have an abundance of is artwork. I wonder if that would shut him up, if a huge canvas board came at him from above. At any rate, if there's a painting you've had your eye on, I might be willing to give you a nice, pre-holiday deal. And I'm always up for a good trade and open to layways, rentals, whatever. It would save him the head injury (and me a potential lawsuit), so please take a look. Don't do it for me, do it for the next mayor of San Francisco. Do it for the children.

I also still have some sumo clown prints left. Click here to see me posing with one of them.

Thanks for reading my novella. I was just going to say something like, "Here's a show I'm in," but that seemed really impersonal, and I'll bet you've missed reading me ramble. Haven't you? Haven't you truly?

Until we meet again,

Me me me me me!
