stuff to read
well, we all do die.
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 4:37 PMI saw Marcel Marceau in college and was able to meet and speak with him (albeit through gestures: I didn't know if he didn't speak English or he was just really full of himself as a mime) after his performance. I gotta say, he was a true master, and moved me to laughter and tears and an inspiration to know my body. The next day I enrolled in a mime class and from there as I grew i studied ballet and Jazz and modern and Tai Chi and on into my soul.
I know we all hold a dim view of mimes these days but no one has ever since moved me as he did. I think mime will probably die with him, for arts of the body have no legacy for grandchildren of grandchildren to look at or listen to and be inspired by.
Rest well, Marcel, and thank you so much for booking Purdue University that Spring day.

"I know we all hold a dim view of mimes these days"----somewhere around here I have a "Bloom County" book with a series of cartoons in which Opus the Penguin beats a mime (to death, if memory serves) with a loaf of olive bread.
I know, I know: this comment shows no respect for the dead. Sorry, can't help it: mimes scare me. |

it is sad when a master of such things passes to the next relm.
I am interested if you would be interested in sharing some of your knowledge of the art with me and my dance company. I love integrating new ideas and think with my area of performance, my company could use some new information? Let me know what you think... |

People can deride mimes all they want....pantomime is a fantastic art form, and MM was truly the master. I'm willing to bet that if you were at a street fair, saturday market, Diversion, Burning Man, or where ever, if you saw a good one, you'd stop to watch, and be entertained.
Thanks for posting this, Mark. |

yes, he did speak english, french, italian, and i think russian...i wouldn't be surprised if there are other ones, but i only know so much. and yes mimes are uncomfortable for people who don't like to be shown themselves or are in need of a "straight " answer, well...i could really go on about this for a while, but don't want to completely disect the man. not yet...VIVE LA FRANCE!!
