Mon, November 19, 2007 - 3:56 PMdarren has been working on a plan to offer a monthly paid subscription with a goal of generating enough revenue to pay for a full-time engineer/dba. (anyone want that job? email at@tribe.net). we plan to put out an email to all tribe users and post to the blog too.
someone also suggested a higher paid subscription for accessing the adult sections which is also the content that has been totally non-monetizable and made it harder for us to attract advertisers so that might make sense.

Great news. Thanks for the update. I'm even going to sponsor someone who *can't* afford it (as opposed to someone who just doesn't want to pay).

Mark... that's wonderful you're feeling the love from the community. It's all genuine, I'm sure. Curious though... I read just about all the comments on your last blog, and have participated in a few discussions about this. I've not seen one person recommend paying a higher rate to access the adult oriented tribes. I don't like that idea at all. Here we go again trying to define what's porn. No, I don't like that idea one bit. I suspect you'd offend more people than you'd attract. It's bad enough we've been segregated already based on 'mature' labels... but to segregate a step further by making people pay for the content? Please re-think this strategy.

Will there still be free accounts
I am more than willing to pay a small fee, but I can just about guarentee that you'll lose half your base of you make everyone pay. My suggestion is to offer both free and paid accounts, with paid being ad free and a couple other perks that free doesn't get.

Competition
It puzzles me why Tribe hasn't caught up with Myspace and Facebook, it has more interesting content. I notice in the news section there is no current press more than a few years back--so nobody is doing PR for Tribe? We should be seeing more notices on blogs and social networking sites like Mashable.
Free or unsubscribed memberships are what will draw in new members...perhaps there could be a tiered level where you get more features for paying or a limited profile for free. For paying members you would get more than one picture upload, messaging, or maybe even the number of tribes you can join. Non paid members would get a basic profile without feeds, picture library, etc. The adult content issue seems relatively trivial, except as a way to have an "adult" section, which is a feature many would pay for to have relative freedom of speech and racy content. Hey Google's social network is a little tame--maybe they would be in the market... Another idea--outsource some of the management to a foundation made up of talented Tribe members, there's so much diversity here it might produce the brainstorms you need. |

nice to see marc responding,> I belong to both Myspace/Writers cafe and recently a friend asked me to join Facebook. Myspace I don't use very much as there has been a lot of negative publicity and comment of just who and what is on there due to a murder( in Australia) linked to persons trawling My Space for a victim. Writers cafe I use but overall I prefer tribe. People here have (mostly) good intentions and the content is always interesting. Long live TRIBE!!!!

re: so nobody is doing PR for Tribe?
i am here partially because there is no PR... why the need to grow in numbers? i'd just like to see us supporting the communities we have linked in already & let the flow of new blood come from our referrals to our friends. |

Well said, Squishe. The quality of the folks here on tribe is what makes it special. Best to generate revenue from who we have, and let tribe continue to grow organically.

Ummmmm????
<darren has been working on a plan to offer a monthly paid subscription with a goal of generating enough revenue to pay for a full-time engineer/dba>
Ok, so does <"offer a monthly paid subscription> mean we are going to have to pay? How does that work for those of us that don't live in the US? |

I just wanted to comment on the idea of higher paid subscriptions for "accessing the adult sections." Considering that all the "adult" tribes went private a while back and have probably lost a good number of members since then, I'm not convinced that there is all that much "adult" content to be had.
However, a bigger concern for me is that I moderate two support tribes for specific categories of transgendered people that are very clearly and strictly NOT porn and not a place for explicit sex talk. But still, back when there was an "adult" category, they both got stuck in it. Yeah, all I had to do was change the category of the tribe back, but I'm still concerned that charging to access "adult" material could mean that sexual/gender minorities would end up having to pay to get to the support tribes. |

The "Premium" service will not be available til Feb, '08. Before I subscribe I would want to know for certain what "Premiun" means. Some of my friends who have already paid don't even have the gold star promised, let alone any new privilages.
If Tribe needs money to develop into a better more reliable site that doesn't go down because of server problems, then I want to see it in writing that these are the "Terms and Agreements". Mark, please take a second or two to clarify your statement, because I know that some people are complaining that they don't know what they are going to be paying for. As a good friend said yesterday, he feels like he is buying a $5 burger but he won't be able to eat it till Feb. So please tell us what these "Premium Privilages" are going to be. Thank you. |
