Mark, you have created something here that can change how people live their lives. Wherever I go, I hear, "Tribe this", "Tribe that", "Tribe me". It has become such an integral part of my life, I'd miss it more than the internet, if it went away. Erm ..... you know what I mean. I look forward to the next level. Good luck.

Praise be to PINCUS, GANESHA and THE PLUTO FORMERLY KNOWN AS A PLANET. Or somesuch. I haven't had my morning trepanation yet, but on the face of it, this sounds like exactly the best thing I could have hoped for here. Maybe I will finally return to tribe and inhabit it once again. Spackle the beaver plasticine monkey DeKooning. On prancer on dancer on spooney moon in June. Regards, Slim |

whew, now just don't F it up, eh?
Yay, new old blood.
FWIW, I helped get our company from IPO to a 70b market cap (those were the days :-)) with the following philosophy rant: "Create long term shareholder value." Out of that falls: Know who your customers are. Don't screw them. Don't screw anyone you're likely to want to work with again. Don't do stupid shit. It's not a pump and dump. As you well know, Tribe's users are its customers, not the advertisers. The advertisers provide revenue, but the users provide loyalty and they created the content that brings more users in. All you need to do is figure out how to extract money, either directly or indirectly, from your user base without pissing them off. :-) Tribe used to be a great place, and a lot of that was because of the energy your founding team brought to the whole project. You may not be able to use that the same way again, but right now you've got a whole lot of pent up good will that's yours for the riding. Just don't F it up this time? Best of luck, Paul |

I am cautiously hopeful. I'd really like to see Tribe become user-centric. If the users are here, the advertisers will come anyway. Because the users are where the eyeballs are. Some of Tribe's earlier builds had a much better UI than what we have now. I sure hope we return to it. Because Tribe, at its best, was really really groovy.
If I think I see good things, I'm happy to put my shoulder to the PR wheel for free. |

Welcome back Mark
Well, after the flood went through, now its time to clean up the debris, eh?
I look forward to seeing what new ideas you are bringing back with you! I hope that the Tribe continues to become "The Place" across the States, not just a local hangout for the Bay Area. So much Potential ! Reach Out My Man ! Only Glorious days to come... Rave |

I've seen a lot of 'stop making changes' posts lately. Just don't get carried away. I'm all for change to functionality and aesthetics, but please keep the eye on your audience. Welcome back, and all that.

tribe to the users where it belongs! - YES
Hi Mark,
This sounds very interesting. Could you please elaborate a little more? As far as I know, there are NO social networking sites out there that are designed and run soley for the benefit of their users. Nearly ALL social networking sites generate huge amounts of real value (and tribe is no exception), but this value is by and large captured by venture capitalist funders and/or large unethical corporate interests (think Murdoch's MySpace). Who owns tribe.net? How are revenues distributed? How are decisions made? I'd love to know the answers to these questions, and also if you'd be interested in making a tribe.net the world's first social networking community wholly owned and controlled by its users/community. Now THAT would be very cool indeed... Warm regards, Josef. |

Open Source?
One more things that would be VERY cool and exciting would be to open up the development of the tribe.net software platform by open sourcing the code that powers the site.
And if you really want tribe.net to stand out from the crowd, and be owned and run by the people who use it, it would make a LOT of sense to do so. Now THAT would be exciting! Cheers, Josef. |

Shareholder value? - NO THANKS
I'd just like to point out that I totally disagree with Paul's implied suggestion that the important this for tribe to do is to create long term shareholder value.
I'm not a shareholder, and nor are the vast majority of tribe members. The real goal should be to generate long-term value for the tribe community, not investors. Sigh, Josef. |

maybe being 'under the radar' is a good thing. and if you ever do need donations to fund tribe, point me to the paypal account or sign me up for a subscription without ads, etc.

You built something that was edgy, fresh and really useful which is why I'm still here. Then the soap salespeople took over and sanitized it, flavorized it , colorized it, and put cute plastic packaging around it for mass consumption. Now you have to rinse it down, cut through the polypropilene wrappers, pour some beer on it, drag it on the sidewalk for a couple of blocks and make it edgy and fresh again. Not an easy task. It may be too late. But it is worth trying.
Here's to taking big, difficult challenges head on. Let the demyspacification of Tribe begin. |

Mark, congrats. I've liked tribe for a long time, definitely more than myspace (b/c it kills my computer -- and the stupid music), but I hope you figure out a way to get it sef-sustaining.
I think you should have an easy way for users to kick a few bucks here & there -- like a paypal link or whatever. (Not that you need it! JEALOUSY) |
