So my friend Izzy took me to see Hank live in 2003. It was an amazing experience and I've never looked back. Julie and I saw him at the war memorial opera house last November and even with a pneumonia I was laughing for 3 hours straight. Anyway, Hes gonna be at Zellerbach hall on 9/19... tickets go on sale tomorrow morning... I'm going who's coming with me?

So, my natal day is this Saturday, and I usually plan some sort of fun activity to celebrate. These last couple of months have been crazy and I've not had a chance to really plan anything or even think about it.

Now I know it's the eleventh hour and all but would any of you be interested in a BBQ at golden gate park on Sunday afternoon? or do you have a suggestion for what we should do to celebrate?

you can come and go as you please. Which has thankfully been my situation here. Still no real touristy activities for me but I'll get to that later. I wanted to try a new restaurant last night but I waited until it was too late to eat supper so I ended up back at the mecca cafe... and I think I'm headed there now for a little breakfast.

I did wander into the Metropolitan Market for a sandwich yesterday afternoon, and I was quite impressed it's like a whole foods on steroids. Maybe even a cross of a whole foods and bristol farms market. Huge with several cases of freshly prepared foods as well as kicking bakery where you could purchase just half of a fresh pie. In the kitchenwares section of the market I was amazed to find that Rachel Ray is marketing and selling a garbage bowl. Brilliant, why didn't I think of that. now granted her garbage bowl looks cool but essentially you could use any bowl in your kitchen for that purpose and although I couldn't find the price I'm sure they're charging at least $20. okie doke more later

My trip up was pretty uneventful thankfully. The hotel I'm staying at is really quite nice and there are a plethora of little restaurants in this neighborhood. I was just at this great Bar/Diner called Mecca, they were playing Jane's Addiction when I walked in and as told by the waitress their specialty is bacon so already in my mind this place is pretty close to heaven. Then my meal comes and I discover their delicious bacon draped over my cheeseburger which incidentally is seasoned to perfection served with mashed potatoes and gravy. The portion was so large that I had to pack up half and bring it back to the hotel with me, and I never do that.

So about six months ago I posted a blog about my intentions to undergo weight loss surgery. Yesterday I was finally able to meet with a surgeon and now everything is being set in motion with the insurance company so that I can get the procedure covered. So begins the chapter I hope to be the final in my lifelong struggle with my weight.

It had not struck me how much of my life has been dominated by this until I had to recount my various failed attempts at weight loss. I've been on and off of diets since I was 11, and I have always been heavy. When I'm brutally honest with myself I can admit that I've always wanted to be thin and to be considered classically attractive. That thought nags me and can send me into a spiral of self loathing. Obviously, not an everyday kind of thing, but the kind of thought that gets you when your vulnerable.

I'm ready for a new life and a different perspective.

What I've got to lose: 172lbs, Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Depression, and back pain

The post op lifestyle changes are pretty significant, but ultimately I feel like the trade-off is worth it. The toughest thing to give up for me will probably be carbonated beverages...no more diet cokes, no more beers and no more champagne to name a few... everything else will pretty much be ok eventually that is to say I will be able to have things in moderation but it is a long road to that about 12-18 months of a 600-800 calorie a day diet...

Exercise is the key component to success. I need to start now, cause I gotta lose 10lbs before the operation. My plan is to get a bike, but until then walking is my main form of exercise and I don't do nearly enough of it. Anyone up for walks in the park?

Know of anyone that's had the procedure? I'd love to talk with them about their experience...

Just a little frustrated on this lovely Friday morning. Trying to stay positive. So I went downtown for my interview for this office manager position at a sweet company. I get there early find free parking amazing for the area.... I walk into the starbuck's to get a little latte to help me wait for my appointment and my cell phone rings... It's the person I'm supposed to be meeting with, letting me know that they've already made an offer to someone, but since I'm already downtown we could still meet and chat about the position...I went and met with her anyway, and I feel like I had a good interview, but what difference does it make...oh well... I'll just keep on sending out those resumes...

From a nurse:

I'll never forget the look in my patient's eyes when I had to tell them they had to go home with the drains, new exercises and no breast. I remember begging the Doctors to keep these women in the hospital longer, only to hear that they would, but their hands were tied by the insurance companies. So there I sat with my patient giving them the instructions they needed to take care of themselves, knowing full well they didn't grasp half of what I was saying, because the glazed, hopeless, frightened look spoke louder than the quiet 'Thank you' they muttered.

A mastectomy is when a woman's breast is removed in order to remove cancerous breast cells/tissue. If you know anyone who has had a mastectomy, you may know that there is a lot of discomfort and pain afterward. Insurance companies are trying to make mastectomies an outpatient procedure. Let's give women the chance to recover properly in the hospital for 2 days af ter surgery.

Mastectomy Bill in Congress

It takes 2 seconds to do this and is very important! Please take the time and do it really quick!

Breast Cancer Hospitalization Bill - Important legislation for all women.

Please send this to everyone in your address book. If there was ever a time when our voices and choices should be heard, this is one of those times. If you're receiving this, it's because I think you will take the 30 seconds to go to vote on this issue and send it on to others you know who will do the same.

There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the 'drive-through mastectomy' where women are forced to go home just a few hours after surgery, against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached. Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on.

PLEASE!! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below.

http://www.lifetimetv.com/breastcancer/petition/petitionthanks.php

Nine of Clubs: The Card of Universal Knowledge

Though this is a card of expanded consciousness, it is also a card of negative thinking. These people must let go of many negative mental patterns accumulated from past lives if they are to access the inherent power in this card. There are many who do and who have reached the very heights of recognition. This is a card of sexual enjoyment and pleasure seeking. If this is allowed to dominate, much time and energy is wasted that would otherwise elevate them to great accomplishment. The Nine of Clubs is here to end a major cycle in their soul's development, a completion that should see them giving their wealth of knowledge to the world. There are some debts to be paid, especially to the Six of Diamonds and Queen of Hearts, but once these debts are paid, they can proceed with their cosmic task of enlightening the world. Financially they are always assisted by diamond men and they do well in their own business if they don't let it spoil their spiritual values. They cannot be totally materialistic or mercenary.

    Your Karma Cards are the:

        * Queen of Hearts == You owe a debt to these people and they are your reflection.
        * Six of Diamonds == These people owe you and you are their mirror.

So I've been running around like a crazy woman cause it's Adele's birthday week.. and there's so much to do... seems like there's alot going on at work too... including having a very inconvenient shift at the moment... but amidst all this hustle and bustle I managed to make homemade cupcakes for Adele's class party tomorrow... They are pictured above...I feel a sense of accomplishment... hope she likes them.... oh in case you were wondering chocolate peppermint cupcakes with vanilla peppermint buttercream frosting.

I loved learning, but I never fit in...not even a little bit. So why am I writing about it now? Have I been in denial? Did I finally work through the trauma? N'ah nothing so exciting... I toured one of the elementary schools I went to this morning...I was miserable there, but oddly enough it seems like a good place for Adele, there appears to be a warm caring learning environment, ie. the kids look happy, it's a nice size campus that's clean and well maintained, There are good enrichment programs because there is a really strong PTA that effectively raises money. So it's my number 2 choice...My number one choice so far is alamo, but I'm still touring Sutro and Spring Valley which is a science Magnet school... then that's it... no more tours I can't take it anymore... I'll apply for a few neighborhood schools, but if we don't get into one of our top choices it'll be the appeals process for me... At this point I'm putting out to the universe I've done everything I can... but strangely I feel ok, I feel like it will work out, which is a marked improvement in my normally fatalistic attitude toward life...

Highpoint of the day: singing along to Jane's Addiction (jane sez) with Adele and giggling all the way home and finding a parking spot without having to circle the block once...

During the heyday of samurai culture, the Japanese word tsuji-giri meant "to try out a new sword on a passer-by." After analyzing your astrological omens, Cancerian, I'm appealing to you not to commit the metaphorical equivalent of that in the coming week. Here's what I mean: You've got good reasons to use the metaphorical equivalent of a new sword, and you will wreak some constructive havoc if you direct your warrior attitude at the right targets. But if, on the other hand, you carelessly slice and dice passers-by and other innocents who don't deserve it, you'll waste that valuable resource and won't correct the problems that have piqued your sense of injustice.

So I went to Whole Foods on Monday to get ingredients for my famous chicken soup. while I was in the produce department I sampled a lovely sweet delicious Comice pear, it's taste was so alluring that I bought two large ones in spite of the price $4.99 per lb. I thought that the pears I bought wouldn't be as sweet or delicious as the sample...they never are... but happily I was wrong this pear may quite possibly be the best pear of my life...
