Emma and I aren't close. This, I am certain, is due to a certain geographical chasm that exists between us, and not to any strange personality quirks on my part. Much like the Abert's Squirrel (Sciurus aberti), and the Kaibab Squirrel (Sciurus aberti kaibabensis), native to either side of the Grand Canyon, we are products of our environment, yet we seem to be on a path of convergent evolution. That is to say, I like Sufi mystic poetry, and Emma does, too.
...
Sometimes I worry about Emma, because she is so young. When she is giggling in the backseat, it is hard to see the grown-up girl inside of her. That grown-up girl is there, though, and I can tell you one thing: She's smarter than all of us.
