Ceres Hog Farm Quarantined

April 20, 2007, 10:13AM
© 2007 The Associated Press

CERES, Calif. — A Stanislaus County hog farm was placed under quarantine after an industrial chemical that's tainted more than 100 brands of dog and cat food was found in pig urine there, state agriculture officials said late Thursday.

Additional testing was under way to determine if the chemical, melamine, was present in the meat produced by American Hog Farm in Ceres since April 3, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

"Although all animals appear healthy, we are taking this action out of an abundance of caution," State Veterinarian Dr. Richard Breitmeyer said in a statement. "It is unknown if the chemical will be detected in meat."

State officials believe the melamine came from rice protein concentrate imported from China by Diamond Pet Food's Lathrop facility, which produces products under the Natural Balance brand and sold salvage pet food to the farm for pig feed.

Pacoima-based Natural Balance announced a limited recall Monday of its Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

Officials were investigating American Hog Farm's sales records to determine who may be affected by the quarantine, said Steve Lyle, a CDFA spokesman. The 1,500-animal farm operates as a "custom slaughterhouse," which means it generally does not supply meat to commercial outlets.

"Mostly it is not so-called mainstream pork. This is an operation that sells to folks who come in and want a whole pig," said Steve Lyle, a CDFA spokesman.

Officials urged those who purchased pigs from American Hog Farm since April 3 to not consume the product until further notice.

Dr. Mark Horton, the state public health officer, said so far "evidence suggests a minimal health risk to persons who may have consumed pork" from the farm.

A man who answered the phone for American Hog Farm late Thursday declined to comment and referred calls to state officials. Phone calls to Diamond Pet Food's Lathrop facility and Meta, Mo. headquarters were not immediately returned.

Melamine, which is used in making plastics and other industrial processes, has been blamed for causing health problems in dozens of dogs and cats. The Food and Drug Administration could not provide updated numbers of pet deaths or injuries due to the contaminated food.

Federal officials said Thursday they were investigating reports that tainted rice protein made its way into hog feed, but did not name specific farms. California officials were not aware of any other cases of melamine found on a hog farm, Lyle said.

    </a>
<div>I am sure everyone has had that experience, where you log into Tribe at work, and someone has just posted some risque photo of some kind, and you have to rush and hide the offending image before a coworker sees it.. I've had a few of those occasions myself here &amp; there as well.

Now that I've joined the ranks of the unemployed, I do all my tribing from home, where there are no rules and no coworkers and nobody to offend. As if in silent celebration of that, every single day when I've logged in, there has been a new, blatant, and delightfully work-unfriendly image there to greet me. The funny thing is that each time I have instinctively tried to resize the browser to hide it, before realizing that I don't need to anymore :P

Please bear in mind, however, that the possibility still exists that a given image will offend the sensibilities of my poor cat, in which case I'll have to go back to hiding the photos module again...

Also amusing is the fact that I've spent significantly less time on Tribe over the past week, when I've been home all day and had no work... indeed, I have been more constructive than ever now that I've been relieved of that burden! :)

Yay! :D

    </a>
<div>Well, that was fun! While certainly not the perfect year, it was definitely the Best Year Ever, as far as I am concerned. There were many struggles early on, but they left me stronger and happier and more positive than I have ever been... the trend over the past decade has been that each year is better than the previous, and it continues to this day

Lots of change in the air for next year, and all of it is good. A little scary, yes, but in a good way, kind of like that scary feeling you get as you climb the hill on a roller coaster... and it's going to be one hell of a ride. Like the silly song says, the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Bring it on, I say! :D</div>

Life's really a chocolate box
some do without, others have plenty
It sticks in my throat, my stomach's in knots
while your box is so full, mine's perpetually empty

while your box is so full, mine's perpetually empty

Tragic moments for the masses
work is the curse of the drinking classes
"Homo homini lupus" we cry

The only things cracked around here are our heads
recepies for disaster that we keep repeating

Life's really a chocolate box
some do without, others have plenty
It sticks in my throat, my stomach's in knots

Here's a real beggar's banquet
a brace of rats in a blood-stained blanket
Meanwhile, gentlefolk high in their chateau
dip silver spoons into Black Forest Gateau

So come lords and ladies, raise glasses in toast
to the other half dying to eat.

<div>Sorry for more sad blogs, but this story jumped out at me today... they were rather cute, too :/

--------

Message from Captain Paul Watson:

I am steaming angry today. The Yangtze river dolphin called the Baiji has been officially declared extinct.

A team of 30 scientists and crew from China, and six other nations searched a 1,000-mile heavily trafficked stretch of the Yangtze, where the Baiji once thrived. After six weeks of intensive search, not a single dolphin was spotted.

The only other cetacean in the river is the finless porpoise and there are only about 400 remaining.

This once rare, nearly blind white dolphin that has survived for millions of years is now gone, exterminated by human development, a victim of “progress” the Chinese say.

The Chinese had once declared it to be the “Goddess of the Yangtze” and predicted that when the Baiji disappears the river will be dead.

This dolphin is the first large marine mammal to be driven to extinction since the extermination of the Caribbean monk seal in the 1950’s

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society recognizes this as a major tragedy and the saddest report for the year 2006.

In the 1980’s there were about 400 Baiji in the Yangtze. In 1997, a population survey counted only 13 animals. The last confirmed sighting of a Baiji was in 2004.

This beautiful dolphin has disappeared because of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, heavy ship traffic that confused their sonar abilities, overfishing, and high levels of industrial pollutants dumped into the river.

"The Baiji is functionally extinct. We might have missed one or two animals but it won't survive in the wild," said August Pfluger, a Swiss economist turned naturalist who helped put together the expedition. "We are all incredibly sad."

The Yangtze River dolphin was the only living representative of an entire family of marine mammals. This put a permanent end to this particular branch of evolution.

For information on the Baiji check out: The baiji.org Foundation: http://www.baiji.org

Sea Shepherd sends a message of condolence and support to August Pfluger, who has dedicated many years to trying to save the Yangtze River dolphin. </div>

    </a>
<div>So, the gravy train has reached the station, the borrowed time is being cashed in, or whatever other metaphor applies...

Quick flashback: I started this job in Richmond, Virginia in Oct of 1998. Exactly one year later, I put in my 2 weeks notice, because Bonnie and I had decided to move to San Francisco. The next day, the bosses offered to let me take my job with me, and work in the local office in Pleasant Hill, CA. Naturally, I said yes, since I wasn't in the mood to go job-hunting in a new city that I had never even visited before.

I knew all along that it would not last forever, they would eventually want the job back, and last Wednesday it finally came to pass. My position is being called back home, and the job is still mine, as long as I am willing to move back there with it.

Fuck that.

Thus, December 29 is my last day here, after 8 years (the longest consecutive time I've spent at any job in my life), and 2007 is a wide open opportunity for me now. Fortunately, since my arrival here I have made tons of wonderful friends, countless connections, and ample networking sources, so I'm not really worried that I won't find another job.

I am looking, however :)

I'm taking the half-ass severance package, cashing out my 401k, and planning to take some as-yet-undetermined classes, and hope to be employed happily and comfortably by February, March at the latest.

I'm not even sure if I want to stay in the same field, or the same industry, or if I want to see this as a chance to break free of both. I'm still processing all of my options at this point.

The good news is that I am not bummed, not scared, not depressed. This was, indeed, a huge favor they have granted me, a kick in the ass, and a chance to free myself from complacency and actually be challenged for the first time in years.

In other words, yay! :D</div>

    </a>
<div>I remember the first time I encountered this beautiful human being, so seemingly vibrant and bursting with life. While the encounter was prosaic in and of itself, it left me feeling strangely intrigued, as if I had a curious connection to her but did not know why. As time passed, I thought of her more and more, talked with her here &amp; there, the intrigue and sense of connection growing until eventually fate and circumstance gave us a chance to spend some time together, just the two of us.

We both knew something was going on, and were excited and yes, afraid, of what it would turn out to be. In what seemed like no time, we were expressing the obvious mutual attraction we had to one another. What followed was a legendary night of simply holding each other, kissing, and gazing into each other's eyes, and yet experiencing a sharing, passion, and intimacy that far exceeded what any sex or conversation had, or could have, ever reached. Breathless and awed, we knew right then that there was a destiny there, that this moment was written for us, and that there was a future waiting to be fufilled. With our next times together, when both sex and conversation had entered the picture, what was brought forth was a level of openess and togetherness that had been previously reserved for the gods alone. We are open with each other so fully and naturally, and share ourselves so freely, that it doesn't have the feel of two people communicating; the feel is more of one person thinking (if that makes sense).

Since that time, I have been feeling a sense of love and wonder toward her that I never thought possible; every day bringing greater closeness and openess, and just when I think I have reached the limit of my capacity for love, I look into her eyes and that capacity becomes infinite. The future has never seemed brighter, and I delight in waking each morning like never before.

She is beautiful. She is amazing. She is gifted. She is sexy. She is compassionate. She is brilliant. She is fun. She is witty. She is strong. She brings joy and delight to all who are fortunate enough to really know her. She challenges me to be the best I can be, because she gets me better than I sometimes get myself. I spend each day in sheer wonderment, astounded that such a person exists in this world, stunned that such a person would give me even the time of day, and amazed at the potentials she unlocks within me with just a glance and a smile. Her name has become tattooed upon my heart, and will be whispered in my final breath.

I said, at the beginning of this blog, that I had felt an immediate connection to her, but didn't know why...

Now I know.

Tara, dearest Tara, I love you, and I am yours.

Really.

Yes.

First impressions count - unless you're Ceres.

Last month, the asteroid was re-classified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and now new images of its surface reveal a surprisingly diverse surface terrain, scientists say.

"We thought Ceres had a flat surface," said Benoit Carry, from the Observatoire Paris-Meudon, "but our images show that it is rich in surface features."
...

The Keck results also support Ceres' suspected oblate shape, which scientists say could be the result of as much as 25% water ice in it mantle. If so, the amount may be greater than all the fresh water on Earth.

"We think Ceres still contains pristine water from when the Solar System was formed," said Dr Dumas.

'Army of One' Gets the Boot
Military Hopes New Slogan Will Boost Recruitment

In its battle to win the hearts and minds of recruiting-age Americans, the Army is replacing its main ad slogan - "An Army of One" - with one it hopes will pack more punch: "Army Strong."

The new approach, the fruit of a $200 million-a-year contract with a major advertising agency, was announced Monday by Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey. He said "Army Strong" will be the centerpiece of a multimedia ad campaign to be launched Nov. 9, timed to coincide with Veterans Day weekend.

Army officials acknowledge that recruiting during wartime is difficult, particularly with the Iraq war grinding on far longer than Bush administration officials expected and U.S. troops dying in battle almost every day.

"There's no question that we want to have a marketing boost right now, it's important to us," said Lt. Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, who oversees the recruiting effort as commander of U.S. Army Accessions Command.

    </a>
<div>So, is it facism yet? Note that this bill doesn't single out destructive or violent actions, it is all about fucking profits.

How long before causing profit-loss for ANY corporation becomes "terrorism"? Protesters would become "enemy combatants", and anyone involved in such would then be subject to the recent new detainee laws- no lawyers, no trial, no release, and tortured as well?

The Senate has ALREADY passed this, it's just awaiting a vote in the House. And yes, several Dems are on-board with this, too:

-------------------------------------

"H.R. 4239, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), is a bill that could make it a crime punishable by imprisonment to cause any business classified as an "animal enterprise" to suffer a loss of profit—even if the company's financial decline is the result of legal activities, such as peaceful protests, consumer boycotts or media campaigns. The term “animal enterprise” would include manufacturers, distributors and sellers of animals or animal products, research facilities, pet stores, breeders, zoos, rodeos, circuses, and animal shelters and the like.

While the ASPCA strongly opposes acts of violence, including vandalism, property damage and trespass, this bill threatens to criminalize as “terrorism” otherwise lawful, constitutionally protected acts often utilized by citizens and organizations to effect change. Lawful and peaceful protests that, for example, urge a consumer boycott of a company that does not use humane procedures, could be the target of this provision if the activity resulted in economic damage to the company.

The bill would also make it illegal to expose cruel conditions at facilities such as puppy mills and research labs, if exposure of such conditions—even if done lawfully—would result in economic damage to the animal enterprise. There is no exemption in the bill to exclude “economic damage” that results from the disclosure of information about a company’s treatment of animals, which is disclosed through public information.

The AETA has already been passed in the Senate, and a vote in the House is expected very soon. It is critical that you contact your representative immediately to show your opposition to H.R. 4239 and urge him or her to protect our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech by opposing H.R. 4239."

--------------------

this bill DOES state that it "does not include any lawful economic disruption that results from lawful public, governmental, or business reaction to the disclosure of information about an animal enterprise", but the slippery slope is there, especially when one considers what will be meant by "lawful", coming from a gang that spied on Quakers, fer crissake, under a "terrorist surveillance program" (not to mention distinguishing between economic "disruption" vs "damage"

we watched the freaks arrive en masse
When they paraded through our streets
we turned a blind eye as they passed

Safe in the comfort of our homes
we all forget the need to fear
This is the new "new Jerusalem"
and it could never happen here

Hear the cries as freedom dies - The gods of war have woken

Five years pass by - unnoticed change
Their glamour has us in it's grasp
but now the walls have eyes and ears
Questions too dangerous to ask

New state controlled T.V. and press
for reasons suddenly unclear
This is the European dream
so nothing bad can happen here

Hear the cries as freedom dies - The gods of war have woken
A Catherine wheel of fire and steel - The death machine in motion

Now the first among equals are chosen at birth
Your outward appearance is all that you're worth
They came for the black man and then for the Jew
They've done with the gypsies - all that leaves is you!

Behind the painted greasepaint smiles
hide faces rarely known to grin
Men who will feed you to the lions
for having different thoughts or skin

And when we realise that we've made
a state to last a thousand years
our pleas for help will not be heard
because there's no-one left to hear

Hear the cries as freedom dies - The gods of war have woken
A Catherine wheel of fire and steel - The death machine in motion

- our soldiers are now more likely to be mis-treaded if captured

<div>Ft. Lewis soldier defends anti-war stance in hearing

SEATTLE - A lieutenant facing possible court martial for refusing to go to Iraq called on other soldiers to throw down their weapons in a video shown Thursday as the Army mounted its case against the officer.

The video, taken at the Veterans for Peace convention last weekend in Seattle, was presented by Army prosecutors at Fort Lewis during a hearing to determine whether 1st Lt. Ehren Watada will stand trial.

The defense called in a professor of foreign affairs to support Watada's argument that the war was illegal and "based on misrepresentation and lies."

Watada, 28, of Honolulu, was charged last month with conduct unbecoming an officer, missing troop movement and contempt toward officials. He refused to deploy to Iraq on June 22 with his Stryker unit, the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division based at Fort Lewis.

'Breast' cover gets mixed reaction

These readers weren't complaining about a sexually explicit cover, but rather one of a baby nursing, on a wholesome parenting magazine — yet another sign that Americans are squeamish over the sight of a nursing breast, even as breast-feeding itself gains more support from the government and medical community.

Babytalk is a free magazine whose readership is overwhelmingly mothers of babies. Yet in a poll of more than 4,000 readers, a quarter of responses to the cover were negative, calling the photo — a baby and part of a woman's breast, in profile — inappropriate.

One mother who didn't like the cover explains she was concerned about her 13-year-old son seeing it.

"I shredded it," said Gayle Ash, of Belton, Texas, in a telephone interview. "A breast is a breast — it's a sexual thing. He didn't need to see that."

It's the same reason that Ash, 41, who nursed all three of her children, is cautious about breast-feeding in public — a subject of enormous debate among women, which has even spawned a new term: "lactivists," meaning those who advocate for a woman's right to nurse wherever she needs to.

"I'm totally supportive of it — I just don't like the flashing," she says. "I don't want my son or husband to accidentally see a breast they didn't want to see."

Another mother, Kelly Wheatley, wrote Babytalk to applaud the cover, precisely because, she says, it helps educate people that breasts are more than sex objects. And yet Wheatley, 40, who's still nursing her 3-year-old daughter, rarely breast-feeds in public, partly because it's more comfortable in the car, and partly because her husband is uncomfortable with other men seeing her breast.

"Men are very visual," says Wheatley, 40, of Amarillo, Texas. "When they see a woman's breast, they see a breast — regardless of what it's being used for."

Babytalk editor Susan Kane says the mixed response to the cover clearly echoes the larger debate over breast-feeding in public. "There's a huge Puritanical streak in Americans," she says, "and there's a squeamishness about seeing a body part — even part of a body part."

"It's not like women are whipping them out with tassels on them!" she adds. "Mostly, they are trying to be discreet."

Kane says that since the August issue came out last week, the magazine has received more than 700 letters — more than for any article in years.

"Gross, I am sick of seeing a baby attached to a boob," wrote Lauren, a mother of a 4-month-old.

The evidence of public discomfort isn't just anecdotal. In a survey published in 2004 by the American Dietetic Association, less than half — 43 percent — of 3,719 respondents said women should have the right to breast-feed in public places.

The debate rages at a time when the celebrity-mom phenomenon has made breast-feeding perhaps more public than ever. Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Kate Hudson and Kate Beckinsale are only a few of the stars who've talked openly about their nursing experiences.

The celeb factor has even brought a measure of chic to that unsexiest of garments: the nursing bra. Gwen Stefani can be seen on babyrazzi.com — a site with a self-explanatory name — sporting a leopard-print version from lingerie line Agent Provocateur. And fellow moms recognized a white one under Angelina Jolie's tank top on the cover of People. (Katie Holmes, meanwhile, suffered a maternity wardrobe malfunction when cameras caught her, nursing bra open and peeking out of her shirt, while on the town with fiance Tom Cruise.)

More seriously, the social and medical debate has intensified. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently concluded a two-year breast-feeding awareness campaign including a TV ad — criticized as over-the-top even by some breast-feeding advocates — in which NOT breast-feeding was equated with the recklessness of a pregnant woman riding a mechanical bull.

There have been other measures to promote breast-feeding: in December, for example, Massachusetts banned hospitals from giving new mothers gift bags with free infant formula, a practice opponents said swayed some women away from nursing.

Most states now have laws guaranteeing the right to breast-feed where one chooses, and when a store or restaurant employee denies a woman that right, it has often resulted in public protests known as "nurse-ins": at a Starbucks in Miami, at Victoria's Secret stores in Racine, Wis., and Boston, and, last year, outside ABC headquarters in New York, when Barbara Walters made comments on "The View" seen by some women to denigrate breast-feeding in public.

"It's a new age," says Melinda Johnson, a registered dietitian and spokesperson for ADA. "With the government really getting behind breast-feeding, it's been a jumping-off point for mothers to be politically active. Mommies are organizing. It's a new trend to be a mommy activist."

Ultimately, it seems to be a highly personal matter. Caly Wood says she's "all for breast-feeding in public." She recalls with a shudder the time she sat nursing in a restaurant booth, and another woman walked by, glanced over and said, "Ugh, gross."

"My kid needed to eat," says the 29-year-old from South Abingdon, Mass. And she wasn't going to go hide in a not-so-clean restroom: "I don't send people to the bathroom when THEY want to eat," she says.

But Rebekah Kreutz thinks differently. One of six women who author SisterhoodSix, a blog on mothering issues, Kreutz didn't nurse her two daughters in public, and doesn't really feel comfortable seeing others do it.

"I respect it and think women have the right," says Kreutz, 34, of Bozeman, Mont. "But personally, it makes me really uncomfortable."

"I just think it's one of those moments that should stay between a mother and her child."

										<div>Venezuela to Prohibit Transgenic Crops

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Frias has announced that the cultivation of genetically modified crops will be prohibited on Venezuelan soil, possibly establishing the most sweeping restrictions on transgenic crops in the Western Hemisphere. Though full details of the administration’s policy on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still forthcoming, the statement by President Chavez will lead most immediately to the cancellation of a contract that Venezuela had negotiated with the U.S.-based Monsanto Corporation.

Before a recent international gathering of supporters in Caracas, President Chavez admonished genetically engineered crops as contrary to interests and needs of the nation’s farmers and farmworkers. He then zeroed in on Monsanto’s plans to plant up to 500,000 acres of transgenic soybeans in Venezuela.

*It's important to note that for every body identified in Iraq, it is estimated there are an additional nine casualties. This list is of confirmed casualties of children as a result of violence during the War in Iraq. Please be mindful of the many, many other casualties left unidentified, as well as the overwhelming number of adult casualties. Special thanks to "Iraq Body Count" for their efforts in honoring the memories of these innocent victims of the war in Iraq.

Mass Citations At Rainbow Family Gathering in Colorado
A permit for a pilgrimage?

by Karen Kilroy and Alan Canfora

The Rainbow Family, an ad-hoc collective of free-spirited individuals, has made an annual spiritual pilgrimage since 1972 to various national forests. This year's Rainbow Family Gathering is outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and will be held from July 1-7. The National Forest Service has determined that a permit is required this year and is arresting people as they arrive. Hundreds of early arrivals have been arrested, ticketed, held in detention camps, tried in secret inside a cramped garage without proper representation, fined, and ordered to leave within 24 hours.

Over the past several days, a federal "National Incident Team" has been assembled to deny these individuals their constitutional right to assemble. The line between the power of the state and the federal government has been compromised, as Colorado State Patrol Troopers, county sheriffs, and local police have been brought into the National Incident Team.

Why is this the year in which a socially conscious group of people is being confronted? Why is the media being fed stories about fire potential, with no mention of the ongoing battle of the Bush Administration to try to shut down their right of free assembly?

In response to Hurricane Katrina, Rainbow Family members ran free food kitchens at which even FEMA personnel ate meals.

Don E. Wirtshafter, an attorney, wrote a plea for help. He suggests that the Bush Administration wants to make this a precedent to discourage groups from open assembly without a permit.

What will happen once the expected 20,000 participants start to arrive at the meeting ground? Many of them will not know what is going to await them because they are generally not a cell-phone/e-mail culture. Many have spent the last weeks hitchhiking to the site or nursing along a car that breaks down every few miles, held together by duct tape. This is their spiritual gathering. They use any peaceful means to get there.

Will they just "go away"? According to a website that allows the Rainbow Family to share messages, it doesn't look like it."*Ignore all rumors of cancellation or organization! Live Lightly with the Land and People*" is the prominent message posted on the site.

There has already been an incident (ABC News, Denver, Colorado) in which about 200 people encircled a police checkpoint, armed with sticks and rocks. The Forest Service drew their weapons, but retreated.

The gathering is being held in a meadow with only one road out. The media has been given word that the reason they cannot assemble is because of potential for fire. This is another distortion of facts. For years now, the Rainbow tribe has waged an ongoing legal battle to defend constitutional freedoms.

Attorney Wirtshafter requests that you call your congressperson now and alert them to this situation. Ask them to get the Administration to stop violating the constitutional rights of the Rainbow Gathering participants.

The U.S. Government should make serious efforts to avoid, not provoke, another Waco or Kent State incident in our National Forests. In recent years, the conservative movement has openly declared a culture war against all remnants of the powerful 1960's movement for peace and freedom. Progressive activists should take action now and speak out against this looming dangerous battle in the modern culture war.

http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0629-34.htm

Now might be a good time to get on the phone with your congress-critters, before this escalates into something VERY ugly!</div>

Clowns Sabotage Nuke Missile

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/matt_mahi/blog/d490cc63-c62b-4597-995a-c9d62ad8d1a9"> <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/2a0/176/2a017618-3832-49ec-9753-fe0c4ede936e.thumb" width="65" height="55" alt="" />
    </a>
<div>on one hand, I find this increduibly hilarious.. but on the other, it makes me wonder who the HELL is guarding our nukes???

On Tuesday morning, a retired Catholic priest and two veterans put on clown suits, busted into a nuclear missile launch facility, and began beating the silo cover with hammers, in an attempt to take the Minuteman III missile off-line. Seriously.

The trio -- members of the Luck, Wisconsin group Nukewatch -- said the break-in was part of "a call for national repentance" for the Hiroshima and Nagaski A-bombings in 1945.

The activists used bolt-cutters to get into the E-9 Minuteman II facility, located just northwest of the White Shield, North Dakota. "Using a sledgehammer and household hammers, they disabled the lock on the personnel entry hatch that provides access to the warhead and they hammered on the silo lid that covers the 300 kiloton nuclear warhead," the group said in a statement. "The activists painted 'It's a sin to build a nuclear weapon' on the face of the 110-ton hardened silo cover and the peace activists poured their blood on the missile lid."

This was all done while wearing face paint, dunce caps, misfitting overalls, and bright yellow wigs.

We dress as clowns to show that humor and laughter are key elements in the struggle to transform the structures of destruction and death. Saint Paul said that we are “fools for God's sake,” and we say that we are “fools for God and humanity.” Clowns as court jesters were sometimes the only ones able to survive after speaking truth to authorities in power.

Guards responded within minutes. And when they arrived, the protesters "ate a lot of gravel," I'm told.

"The individuals were taken from the area and brought to the McLean County Jail," the AP notes. "The three are being charged with criminal trespass and criminal mischief, both Class A misdemeanors, and bond was set at $500 each.... The FBI is involved in the case and federal charges are pending."

<div>Tagged by Mercy, now I have to think on a Friday afternoon

RULES - Once you've been tagged, you have to write a blog or post a bulletin with 8
facts/things/habits about yourself, saying who tagged you.In the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag backs.

1. I still have a $0.98 royalty check from the only CD I ever sold. I sold it to myself just to get the check :)

2. I used to frequently enjoy going fishing, but over time I stopped doing it because I felt pity, but not for the fish (which I'd usually release) No, I quit because I felt pity for the bait

3. I have, it seems, a love-affair with commas, of all things, as well as an ever-present compulsion to over-hyphenate

4. I broke my tail-bone at a water-park when I was 31, and never went to a Doctor for it. Always remember to lock your feet together!!!

5. For whatever reason, I've found that high heels look silly more often than they look sexy

6. The first time I had a crush on someone was in kindergarten. I wrote her a love-note, and gave it to her, but nothing else happened because she didn't know how to read yet.

7. The first time I ever flew in a plane was in 1999, going back to Virginia to retrieve my cat

8. At one point in early child-hood, there were 4 generations living under the same roof. Had I been born a few months earlier, there would have been 5, and I would be able to say I had met my great-great-grandmother

I have no idea who has and who has not been tagged already... so let's go with Jaimee, Ally, Aarron, MISC Kevin, Ember, and Omar

NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls
By Leslie Cauley, USA TODAY

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&amp;T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.

The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: The NSA record collection program

"It's the largest database ever assembled in the world," said one person, who, like the others who agreed to talk about the NSA's activities, declined to be identified by name or affiliation. The agency's goal is "to create a database of every call ever made" within the nation's borders, this person added.

For the customers of these companies, it means that the government has detailed records of calls they made — across town or across the country — to family members, co-workers, business contacts and others.

The three telecommunications companies are working under contract with the NSA, which launched the program in 2001 shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the sources said. The program is aimed at identifying and tracking suspected terrorists, they said.

The sources would talk only under a guarantee of anonymity because the NSA program is secret.

Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden, nominated Monday by President Bush to become the director of the CIA, headed the NSA from March 1999 to April 2005. In that post, Hayden would have overseen the agency's domestic call-tracking program. Hayden declined to comment about the program.

The NSA's domestic program, as described by sources, is far more expansive than what the White House has acknowledged. Last year, Bush said he had authorized the NSA to eavesdrop — without warrants — on international calls and international e-mails of people suspected of having links to terrorists when one party to the communication is in the USA. Warrants have also not been used in the NSA's efforts to create a national call database.
