1st day in Zurich

   Tue, January 10, 2006 - 9:15 PM
We arrived in Zurich at 7am Tuesday morning and um yeah it was pretty damn cold. We are staying at the Limmathof Hotel, which is about 2 blocks from Rail City, an amazing 3-4 story shopping mall located underground at the train station. The neighborhood has narrow cobblestone streets and is filled with little snack shops, bars, cabarets, adult stores, and boutiques. We walked around for 2 1/2 hours before we realized that none of the stores were going to open before noon so back to Rail City we went for a breakfast that consisted of sausage with sweet mustard, a cappuccino, and a HUGE freaking pretzel that took us about 12 hours to finish. Pretty damn good meal. After that we walked around Old Town for some shopping and sight seeing. One thing I’ve noticed…mixed drinks here…expensive! My Cape Cod was about $12.80. I thought that maybe we walked into the wrong bar but after walking around a little more we found that almost all drinks were around the same price. I’m thinking of switching to beer or follow Josh’s lead and going for apfel korn, which was about $4. We are having a slight problem adapting to the time difference but I’m sure it will be a little better tomorrow. We napped a lot yesterday and today we were wide awake at 3am. Right now I’m just killing time until breakfast starts at 6:15…which is in about 3 minutes. We didn’t take many pictures yet but our train for Amberg doesn’t leave until 11 so we have some time.

When my sister
first moved to Zurich 13 years ago, she was shocked at how all the stores closed at six pm. And how she needed to go to one store for cheese, another for meat, another for bread.

When I visited her a few years later, I was shocked how much everything cost. $20 chinese food lunches, $3 cans of coke, etc.
