Current project - can you help (synesthesia)?

   Sun, April 8, 2007 - 7:23 PM
Ok, so I've finally worked out a portion of what I want to achieve with the project that I am working on (which has been extensive, but somewhat aimless until quite recently) - I want to develop a text which, by my mere act of writing it - and equally, for any readers, by the mere act of their reading it - will trigger a process which develops new forms of sensory experience and/or new sensory capacities. A relatively easy and obvious example of this would be synesthesia - I'd like to be able to make my audience synesthetic, without their having to do exercises after reading the book (as many of us only get so far as thinking "Yes, those exercises would work - I should try them" without actually doing the exercises). This process will also, ideally, give the reader the ability and necessary confidence to develop their own new experience-modalities.

So, if you are - or know of someone who is - a synesthete (or know a lot about the subject) , I'd like to chat a bit about it, so I can work out what is needed. I realize that there are some interesting theories around on the topic of natural synesthesia, but whether they are able to incorporate instances of psychedelically-induced synesthesia (or, for that matter, induced by any means) is a bit up in the air. I'm more interested in the extremely rich psychedelic-variety, and in developing that capacity extrapharmaceutically, but I think I have a lot to learn from and about natural synesthetes, too.
