My Testimonials

April 16, 2006
Melissa is a remarkable musician who plays the most far out instruments she can find. Her extensive knowledge of complicated Balkan songs is impressive. I love listening to her sing.

It is always an honor to play in an ensemble with Melissa. I am proud to share a name with her!

Melissa the Loud; a truly gifted beauty with so many talents, the most obvious of which is the enthralling and noisy music she makes, whether percussion, cumbus, mijwiz, xaphoon, or hurdy gurdy - or that amazing voice...

Beware! I've only been speaking of her music so far. Watch her dance and you may well become entranced. A beauty inside and out, gracious and generous, Melissa is an amazing human being.

I've been very fortunate to have had this rare creature in my life. Blessed with an infectious wit, she's one of the most disciplined, focused and creative people I've ever known, a living embodiment of intellect and beauty.

Between you and me, you would do well to make sure that you get her solo CD and catch her playing when you have the chance!

Where's a snappy comeback when I need it? (blog entry) While nursing, I enjoy wasting time on things like the LLL or Kellymom message boards. Pedestrian Adventures (blog entry) So yesterday, I decided to take a walk to the park, which is only a few blocks away. Walking is not easy in Doha. For one, there are no sidewalks. There are piles of construction rubble. This year, I have nice sturdy sandals, and I've always been ... read more

Way too busy to blog (blog entry) I hear some babies fuss in the evenings. That must be because they want to go out and dance to a reggae band, as in this picture. My klezmer band oppened for Adonai and I at Castaways, and a good time was had by all. Thelma rarely has the chance t... read more

Back in NYC (blog entry) I'll try to type fast while Thelma naps. I'm in NYC, and will play at Djinn's weekly gig at Je'Bon tonight. My mom was going to babysit, but she's sick. Any volunteers (people I know of course) to keep Thelma entertained at the show while I play? ... read more

What's That Noise?

While nursing, I enjoy wasting time on things like the LLL or Kellymom message boards. Moms often post entertaining stories of how some ignorant person (waiter, swimming pool attendant, whatever) told them not to breastfeed in public, but they heroically kept breastfeeding anyway, and sometimes even had a witty comeback. But I read these stories, and think, "Will an opportunity for heroism like that never happen to me?" I've never gotten anything other than support or indifference while breas... read more

So yesterday, I decided to take a walk to the park, which is only a few blocks away. Walking is not easy in Doha. For one, there are no sidewalks. There are piles of construction rubble. This year, I have nice sturdy sandals, and I've always been pretty good at rock scrambling, so I'm OK, although having Thelma strapped to me does throw my balance off a bit.

The sturdy sandals are important. The other day, I saw a bevy of 3 girls, all dolled up under their abayas, giggling their way throu... read more

I have more pictures, but Bob's hidden them on the computer somewhere.

I'll try to type fast while Thelma naps. I'm in NYC, and will play at Djinn's weekly gig at Je'Bon tonight. My mom was going to babysit, but she's sick. Any volunteers (people I know of course) to keep Thelma entertained at the show while I play? The thing is, she likes dancing, but can't yet really do it herself, so someone has to pick her up and dance her around.

I took her out to The Cupping Room last night, and we both enjoyed the show, although Thelma fell asleep as I danced her aroun... read more
