<div>
I have a friend visiting from in the backwoods in northern California. She says all she's heard since moving there has been almost all hippie acoustic music, and though it does have its appeal she's in the big city now and is craving some bum-shaking bass, maybe some breaks, but in any case some non-acoustic music she can shake to.

Please to be telling me what is going on this weekend so I can pass along the info to her thx!!!

(I, on the other hand, plan to lay low this weekend :)

Who wants to see Modeselektor in Seattle on Oct 19th?

    </a>
										<div>I wasn't sure if I could gain entry to the local show so I bought 2 for the Seattle show to hedge my bets. Lucky for me I get to see Modeselektor on the 18th in San Francisco -- and now have 2 tickets to the Seattle show that will go unused. I'll post it to craigslist if'n no one I know can go, but will just *give* these tickets (that's a $30.98 value!) to a friend if someone is willing to make the trip to put them to use. Yep, that means YOU.

Wanted: wee little bird's nest

    </a>
										<div>I'm looking for a bird's nest or two, the kind that a sparrow or a robin or a chickadee would build. You know the kind: quite small, stereotypical bird's nests (not giant crazy messy magpie/eagle's nest, but compact &amp; rounded &amp; relatively tidy.)

Perhaps some of yous have trees in your yards that may have recently- or soon-to-be- abandoned nest in them? Or maybe you will someday soon come across a nest on your property or in the woods and think on my request?

Thank you in advance! And in advance I'll let you know that as compensation for your empty-nest-nabbing abilities I'll remit to you one of the things I'm going to make from it. You'll like it, I promise.

										<div>
The day after I returned from Budapest, Nicole asked me how I was feeling about Burning Man, whether I'd consider going at this point. A scheme was hatched.

We lied to each and every one of you to your faces.

And Thursday night we packed up in true weekend warrior style and headed toward the playa.

We arrived at 2am, parked, and walked toward Camp DDI with a backpack each and some chocolates. When we got to camp, there was Lee waiting beside the bicycles. "Hi Lee, how's it going - what're you doing tonight?" "....WHAT?!?! You're not supposed to be here!" Repeat 20+ times.

So. Much. Wonderful!!!

We left exactly 48hr later, at 2am Sunday morning, after Crude Awakening burned.
We didn't unpack our car or pitch our tent.
We did bring a variety of homemade pies and fresh fruit.
We had the funnest, nicest burning man yet.

(My only regret is not finding Tracey -- I tried and wanted to maintain the element of surprise. I'm really sorry, I'd have liked to have seen you very much. 48hr was long enough and still too short.)

So it seems this year's art project was surprising the fuck out of y'all. Thanks for the perfect time!

...2008? Totally not going :P

I need a mid-size backpack, small enough to be carry-on on international flights, but large enough to fit a week's worth of clothes.
A chrome-sized shoulder-strap bag would work ok too.

If I could borrow a suitable pack I'd be ecstatic and less broke than if I have to buy one. I'll be taking it to eastern europe from the 7th to the 17th - Thankyou!

<div>
I'm trying to get myself to Budapest and back for under US$1000, leaving August 8 (+/- a few days), until August 18 (+/- a few days).

I'm starting to think this is not possible; the best deal I've found so far is $1292 after taxes &amp; airport fees etc. (Funny enough, it's a straight flight from SFO to BUD, 1 short stopover each way - getting myself to a european city then taking a discount european airline like easyjet to BUD is still more expensive.)

Any suggestions on where to look for good deals? The internet is too big a place for me today.

<div>I've been listening to minimal glitchy IDM a bit too long -- I barely own any music without a crunchy beat under an ethereal melody with what sounds like a computer's last gasp in the background. Nice as it is, I'm starting to bore myself.

What are you listening to waaay too much of right now? What's making your rump shake a little in the driver's seat while you're about town? What do you listen to when you've had a bad day? Please name a few artists &amp; songs, any genre, anything at all (of course not what you think I'll like, but what YOU like :)

Do you have extra housewares hanging around and a hankering for a crisp new $10 bill? There's still a few things we need at our new home; we're willing to pay you bottom dollar for the following items:

a toaster oven! so essential - I've been toasting things in the actual oven with mixed results
a large mirror
a food processor (ok, we'll pay more than $10 for this)
lighting of all sorts (but not 90s-style halogen lamps)
a kettle
a garlic press that actually works
a peeler that actually peels
a bookshelf (we're actually kinda picky about the aesthetics of this one; everything else not so much)

Thankyou! xoxo M.

CDHS Cancer Detection Programs: my mind is blown

<div>My doctor told me about this California Department of Health Services program today: "Cancer Detection Programs" -- http://www.dhs.ca.gov/cancerdetection/

If you qualify (above 25, below a certain income level, and your insurance doesn't adequately cover it or doesn't cover it at all, etc) the program provides free cervical cancer screening to you! What's more, it'll also pay for TREATMENT if your tests come back positive for pre-cancerous or cancerous cells. Holycrap!

It also covers breast exams and cancer treatment for women over 40, and prostate cancer treatment for men over 18.

Ask your doctor about this next time you go! I qualified easily which means most people I know probably will too; it took about 10min of filling out forms and waiting in the office, and then I was covered. So now there's no excuse for you to not be on top of screening for these cancers.

(P.S. I looked around a found that a bunch of other states provide similar services - I urge you to look it up online and ask your doctor if you don't live in California.)

<div>Planning to buy gifts for whatever your winter holiday is? Consider buying from local artists &amp; designers.

Below is a list of some sale events and stores that I know about. The local artist events often have great deals, btw. Also I couldn't be bothered with links but a quick google search will bring them up.

Please add to the list if you know about someone/something I don't (which is likely - also more online sellers? :)

This trunk show features the best local designers, artisans and merchants bringing their creations to the savviest shoppers in the middle of a rockin' party!" *Note from me: I hate the description of this, but check out the Nooworks page, some of their tshirts are cute
12 Galaxies, 2565 Mission St., San Franciso

Dec. 17th
Funk'n'Trunk: "Featuring the best in local designers for men and women." *Note from me: I've found some great stuff at Funk'n'Trunks in the past, despite the sad description I added here.

The high-end yarn shops often sell gorgeous &amp; soft hand-knit scarves, hats etc: For example Urban Knitting Studio @ 320 Fell St, or Image Knit at 18th &amp; Sanchez (there are plenty more shops but I don't feel like looking them up)

Faern's Etsy Store is http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=23296

my queen bed for your full size bed?

<div>My bedroom is s-m-a-l-l. I'm tired of tripping over my own bed and want a smaller one.

Problem: I'm saving for travel so don't want to spend on a new mattress/bed.

I'll trade you my queen mattress/boxspring for your full-sized mattress or good-quality futon. (I have no frame, sorry.) I'd rather do this trade with friends cause it kinda squigs me out to take bedding from a stranger.

The bed is about 3 years old, was cheap when I bought it and is not, I repeat not, pillow-top. But it's not bad either; firm and comfortable. Oh! and the mattress is clean - my mom ingrained in me that a mattress should never go without a mattress cover, ever, so it's always had one. Hopefully yours is clean too!

Death! Valley!

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/mella/blog/2764bec0-ef2d-4882-acd6-745623bb5614">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/e51/80f/e5180f55-d8af-4e35-88c7-e0a25e61a24d.thumb" width="65" height="52" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Nicole &amp; I are going to Death Valley over thanksgiving! So excited.

I'd like the trip to go something like my previous trips to Joshua Tree: drive in a ways, park the car somewhere convenient, leave a note for a bit of safety ('We're headed East, be back in 2 days' or something like that), then start walking into the wilderness; set up camp far from any signs of civilization, use this as a base camp for dayhikes, and using carefully memorized landmarks and/or GPS to find my way back to the car when it's time to go.

However, Death Valley is an enormous place. There's a lot of places we could go to do this, a lot of different landscapes, a lot of different experiences. I'm having trouble sorting it out.

Have you been to Death Valley? Do you have any suggestions on where we might go for this particular trip?

Vendetta Retreat: a free walk-in revenge clinic

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/mella/blog/5efc5b8d-03b8-46e1-a718-884a2d7dd9db">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/ee9/a59/ee9a5973-a780-47a4-b223-9948abcc5257.thumb" width="58" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Do you feel anger? Are you holding a long-standing grudge you just can't loosen your grip on? Do you feel the deep stink in your heart of desire for retaliation and retribution? Is there a burning need for vengeange stuck deep in your soul?

Look this way, my hate-filled friends!

Jon Brumit has created the most wonderful place for you at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts -- that's right, it's a FREE WALK-IN REVENGE CLINIC:

http://www.jonbrumit.com/vendetta-retreat.html

Each Thursday and Saturday until the end of 2006 you can just drop by the clinic in the YBCA and act out, sublimate and satisfy your revenge-lust.

Think up your own, or choose from the clinic's menu which includes creating unflattering caricatures, staging an elaborate and creative public humiliation for your target, confusing rejection letters in the mail, shooting the clinic staff with a pellet gun, and much more.

List of Free Museum Days

<div>From http://id.essortment.com/museumssanfran_rgud.htm

***Edit: I realized some of this info was not accurate, mostly just that some of the regular admission prices and museum hours have changed (apparently this was an old list I'd copied.) I've fixed the errors, most everything on this list should be accurate now.
___

All of San Francisco's major museums offer special days, usually once a month, when admission is free or discounted. Most of the free days cluster around the first week of the month, especially the first Wednesday. Some of the museums also offer extended evening hours on their free days. Here's a list, organized by day of the week so you can mark your calendar:

**** Special days once a month ****

FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH:

Jewish Museum. Steuart Street between Mission and Howard.
(Regular hours and prices: Sun to Thurs 12-6 $ 5 adults, $ 4 students w/id and seniors 62+, free kids under 12)

FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH:

SF MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). Third Street between Mission and Howard. See also Thursday half-price evenings, below.
(Regular hours and prices: 11-5:45 Fri to Tues; 11-8:45 Thurs. $ 12.50 adults, $ 8 seniors $ 7 students w/id, kids under 12 free when with an adult.)

FIRST WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH:

deYoung Museum, Golden Gate Park. Extended hours on free day: Open until 8:45 PM.
(Regular hours and prices: 9:30 - 5 Tues to Sun. $ 10 adults, $ 7 seniors 65+ $ 6 kids 12-17, kids under 12 free.)

California Academy of Sciences (Natural History Museum and Aquarium), 875 HOWARD STREET in downtown San Francisco (between 4th and 5th Streets), Extended hours on free day: Open until 8:45 PM. Free days are often busy, especially during the summer, so admission may be time-ticketed.
(Regular hours and prices: 9-6 from Memorial Day to Labor Day, 10-5 the rest of the year. For admission to Natural History Museum and Aquarium: $ 10 adults, $6.50 12-17, students w/id and seniors 65+, $2.00 kids 4-11; kids under 4 free.)

Exploratorium, 3601 Lyon. Open till 9 PM.
(Regular hours and prices: Summer (Memorial Day to Labor day) 10-6 Thurs to Tues; 10-9 Wed. Rest of year Wed 10-9, Tues and Thurs to Sunday 10-5. $ 13 adults, $ 10 students over 18 w/id, seniors 65+, $ 10 people w/disabilities, youth 6-17; $ 8 children 4-12; free children under 4.)

SECOND WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH

California Palace of the Legion of Honor, Lincoln Park, 34th and Clement.
(Regular hours and prices: Tues - Sun 9:30 - 5. $ 10 adults, $ 7 seniors, $ 6 ages 13-17, free under 13.)

FIRST THURSDAY EVENING OF THE MONTH

(Students and seniors are also admitted free every Thursday, all day)
(Regular hours and prices: Tues, Wed, Sat, and Sun: 11-6. Th, Fri 11-8. $ 6 adults, $ 3 students and seniors.)

SECOND SUNDAY OF THE MONTH

The Oakland Museum is worth a trip across the Bay. 1000 Oak Street, Oakland.
(Regular hours and admission: Wed-Sat 10-5, Sunday 12-5. $ 8 adults, $ 5 seniors 65+, $ 5 students, under 6 free. May be more for special exhibits.)

**** Special evenings once a week ****

EVERY THURSDAY EVENING

Half-Price: SF MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) from 6-9 PM only every Thursday evening. See also "First Tuesday" above for a free day and more information.

**** Other deals ****

Some museums offer reduced admission if you show a Muni transfer or Fast Pass. The Legion of Honor and the deYoung will give $ 2 off; the California Academy of Sciences (Natural History Museum, Aquarium, and Planetarium) gives $ 1 off regular adult admission

Memberships: If you are a very frequent museum goer, consider joining your favorite museum. You will get free admission and, usually, a discount at the gift store.
**Note from Me: I highly recommend memberships -- it allows you to feel ok about popping in for just a short time when you're in the neighborhood instead of feeling obliged to spend hours and appreciate every piece in the building to get your admission's money worth. It's much more enjoyable the first way.

Free days for San Francisco residents at the California Academy of Sciences (Natural History Museum and Aquarium). These are in addition to the free 1st Wednesday of the month listed above. Different days are set aside for residents of different neighborhoods. Call the museum or check their website for details.

City Pass. This can be a good deal for visitors. Cost is $33.25 for adults, $26.25 for seniors 65+, $24.25 for youth 12-17. It gives you 50% off the admission price at the deYoung, Exploratorium, Legion of Honor, Museum of Modern Art, and the Academy of Sciences, as well as giving you seven (consecutive) days of free rides on Muni, including the cable cars, and a discount on a Bay Cruise.

I dropped a few people from my friends list tonight. Mostly people whose tribe accounts have been inactive for quite some time. Apologies if I was wrong about that. I mean no offense. Things were just getting a bit cluttered in friendspace....

"I will send the first five commenters on this post something artsy-fartsy that I created.
When you get it, you will send the first five commenters on your blog something artsy-fartsy. ad infinitum. Get it?"

And Sunday I found a wonderful package in the mail. So now the ball's in my court. Who wants stuff I make? I'll make you nice stuff I promise, and stuff it in an envelope and send it off to you; or leave it on your doorstep in a flaming paper bag, whichever I deem most appropriate. I'll try to go heavy on the artsy and light on the fartsy, and I offer no guarantee that there will no taxidermy involved in this process. Reply here and/or email me with your postal address at mella (at) notfine (dot) com. I'm cross-posting to LJ so I'll let you know when I've had five collective responses.
