crude oil closed at $110.87/BBL yesterday

at 42 gal/bbl, this is $2.640/gal of crude oil. That means that even IFF they could turn that into a 1:1 change for gasoline, the material cost alone is $2.64/gallon.

Now that you know, I'll thank you to not tell me that we can change the price of gas by not buying from Exxon/Mobil. You want prices to go down? Don't buy ANYTHING. Because everything you buy causes the price of gasoline to go up.

More on this later, when I have time to write the essay that's in my head.

almost everything is moved

i figured out how to stay on top of DynDNS. i think this method will work much better

i still can't find a way to make the second WRT54G automagically run a command on reboot. i think my version of alchemy doesn't like the ideas i've found/tried. i guess i'll just have to try dd-wrt. oh damn.

more vi today. i'm starting to get some feel for how it wants to work. still far from fluent, but certainly dangerous.

also, getting used to going to term when i need to do something, rather than looking for the gui. this is good. i like to know i can use any tool available

apparently i need to spend some time reading the man pages for whereis/find/locate to really understand how to use them. because clearly right now i don't

and my site is visible. not that there's anything to see right now. seriously, by monday i'll have at least a splash page up. such is my goal. then real information comes soon after

so, yesterday I:

  • moved /home to /dev/md0 [raid 1 array] in single user mode

  • edited /etc/fstab in vi, without screwing anything up [someday i'll learn vi. just not today]

  • made both media and real users accessible through Samba

  • added all three to the users group

  • chmod 774 media

  • ln -s /home/media/music music [*/video, etc. for both real users]

  • copied all our music [i think], and most of our videos to the server

  • set the server to hold its ip address [outside the dhcp range] so the hosts files will stay correct

  • and some other stuff that i'm forgetting

and most of them in xTerm

i know - to too many of you, this is old hat by now. but this box is also my learning project. so here's to small victories.

and now a question - just bought a laptop. it's coming with an 80GB HD, because i was not about to pay ~300 to upgrade to a 250GB. i figure i can buy a new one on TD for less, so the plan is to upgrade when it gets here. is there an easy [read: free] ghosting tool that i can use to make the swap, or will i be happier just reinstalling from scratch with the resource cd it comes with?

goal, of course, is to dual-boot xp pro and ubuntu. it's coming with xp pro installed

coming soon - finishing the workstation [again]. unfortunately that had to take a back seat until i have something stable that i can run CAD on. chances are, the workstation will end up becoming a new server, and i'll sell the old machine, to simplify the collection. if the new laptop is good enough it will negate the need for the workstation as such.

what's this, a post?

not a lot to say lately, so i've been not saying much.

avenue q was great fun

work situation is exciting, even if the work itself hasn't been lately

learning animation in solidworks is cool though. if nothing else, it improves my resume

had a number of days off lately, and more coming up. finally actually used this past one constructively. it feels good to have gotten some stuff done, even if it meant spending my entire federal refund to do it...

the expo was good. i think this one was better overall than the last.

that's enough. i don't feel like posting anymore
