The Advent of Summer (blog entry) There is no one on the road as I trace the familiar curves of Rte 34 with my car, on the way out to the ranch. The heat has unrolled throughout the day and is now evenly and uniformly coating the entire desert valley. The skies are hazy from the m... read more

There is no one on the road as I trace the familiar curves of Rte 34 with my car, on the way out to the ranch. The heat has unrolled throughout the day and is now evenly and uniformly coating the entire desert valley. The skies are hazy from the many forest fires in California. From a distance, I imagine the many lives upset, the forces gathering and strategizing the counter attack. You can smell the smoke of hundreds of burned trees from hundreds of miles away in the air, and the mountains t... read more

The management of the Burning Man event is a complex undertaking which grew up over a period of time as the event gained in popularity. It involves on the one hand coordinating the many tasks related to construction and removal of the temporary installation of Black Rock City itself. Event organizers deal with BLM, law enforcement, emergency services, communications, gate and box office, a staff commissary, café and ice concessions, the Man installation with supporting structures, transportat... read more

No one likes to be ignored. Everyone needs to feel that their efforts and existence are appreciated, and this is more important than any other kind of reward. Is this just an expression of ego? Selfishness? If so, everyone is selfish. That would be like calling thirst selfish. My thirst is real, and it does not necessarily exclude your thirst. This impulse seems to be more a yearning for that second life, the one when the body and self are gone, and all that remains are the stories that are t... read more

by Ogden Nash

In Baltimore there lived a boy.
He wasn't anybody's joy.
Although his name was Jabez Dawes,
His character was full of flaws.

In school he never led his classes,
He hid old ladies' reading glasses,
His mouth was open when he chewed,
And elbows to the table glued.
He stole the milk of hungry kittens,
And walked through doors marked NO ADMITTANCE.
He said he acted thus because
There wasn't any Santa Claus.

Another trick that tickled Jabez
Was crying 'Boo' at li... read more

Lies, damn lies, and...

It's impossible to write a Testimonial for Metric.
You just have to 'be there'.
I can say that his warm welcoming smile and cold Sierra Nevada Pale Ale helped induce me to stick around 2002 Pre-Event and experience that thing they call Burningman.
It transformed my life.
I can say that he has taught me by his example and growth (not THAT one! He had it cut off.)
I don't know many finer men than him.
Occasionally flawed and human, but always consistent.
It's been a true Honor to have Metric in my life.
Just...several States away...

I first met Metric back when he was, uh, pretty much like he is now. Kind of. Well, his hair was bigger. And he had that Pollyanic BM glow, whatever the F that was. I mean Pollyanna in the sense of seeing all things as a positive, and being happy with that.

.Anyways, He's aweful fun to kiss, and great to cuddle up with.\
I give him an eleven. No, a 15. An A, and an E, anyways.

And I would trust Metric with my life.

Metric is one of my favorite people ever, and I'm happy to be his friend.

He's incredibly intelligent, perceptive, honest and.... he's WAY COOL!

Metric brings to mind, a favorite Irish phrase of "phucking brilliant!!!" (with 3 exclamation points)

You can talk for hours with this guy, amidst ideas and concepts, and realities, and giggles, and tips and "wow, I could have had a V-8" revelations...

Always pleasant, upbeat and fully charged (well, expect the morning after..)

Thanks for being you buddy!!
hugs

I can't think of better words for this boy, 'cept that I just adore him. If everyone converted to the Metric System, we'd make lots more sense!
