Workshop Summary:
This four hour workshop offers a complete overview of the many
functions of this incredibly powerful and flexible piece of music
software. You will learn how to use Ableton Live for composition,
studio production, sound design live performance, and scoring to
picture. The software's approach is fresh and empowering, and once you
understand the basic principles of how it works, creating music with
this extraordinary tool becomes fun, easy and super inspiring.

What is Ableton Live?
Ableton Live is the premiere music software application for every
stage of the musical process, from creation to production to live
performance. It is used in the live shows of pretty much all of
today's top electronic musicians, from Sound Tribe Sector 9 to
Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob. Whether you are a sound designer or a
film composer, bumping hip hop or indie rock, dubstep or glitch, the
versatility of Ableton Live makes it the ideal tool for both
beginners and experts alike.

About Steve Nalepa:
LA-based electronic musician, multimedia artist and mad scientist
collector Steve Nalepa combines deep dub bass, glitchy breaks,
bioacoustic atmospheres and beautiful sinewave melodies to create his
patented brand of ambient glitch dub. Nalepa has performed at
festivals around the world from Glade UK to Coachhella, produced
tracks with such legends as Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders and was
featured in the prestigious Visionaire 53: Sound alongside artists
David Byrne, U2, Danger Mouse, Dan The Automator and more. As
M-Audio's Technical Marketing Specialist for 4 years, during the time
in which the company distributed Ableton Live, Nalepa did marketing
and artist relations, providing VIP technical support and software
training for a multitude of high-profile artists and producers. When
he's not in the lab or rocking dance floors together with Tokyo-based
producer MattB as Bass Science, Nalepa can be found teaching Ableton
Live, ProTools and Reason to his students at Chapman University
Conservatory of Music.

Overview:
The workshop will begin with a thorough overview of the many features
of Ableton Live and all of the various ways to utilize the program,
explained in a manner that respects newcomers to the software as well
seasoned veterans.

Session View:
Live's unique Session View acts as a powerful musical sketch and
launch pad, allowing you to try out new ideas easily and improvise
freely. Each cell in the Session View grid can hold a recording, MIDI
file, or any other musical idea. These ideas can be recorded on the
fly or dragged in from the Browser and played in any order and at any
time you wish.

Arrangement View:
The Arrangement View offers a timeline-based approach for traditional
multitrack recording, MIDI sequencing and other music production
tasks. You can even improvise in the Session View, and all of your
actions will be recorded into the Arrangement View, where they can be
edited whenever you like.

MIDI Mapping:
Live features powerful built-in instruments, MIDI effects and audio
effects which can easily be mapped to a MIDI controller, giving you
the ability to tweak the parameters of the mixer, effects and
instruments on the fly.

Composition Techniques:
There are many different ways to utilize Ableton Live for composition.
The workshop will explore these different approaches with a number of
tips and tricks from a prolific Ableton user who will offer step by
step instructions that cover the entire song writing process including
crafting beats, writing melodies, dialing in sounds, creating parts,
utilizing effects, arranging, mixing and mastering. Advice will be
given on how to get the fattest sounding drums, how to use EQ to
separate the various elements in a song, getting the levels correct,
etc.

Creating Drumbeats in Live:
Live's Impulse Drum Machine and new Drum Rack are powerful tools for
Beat Creators. The workshop will show you how to streamline your beat
production and gain endless creative possibilities.

Using Live's Built-in Instruments to Create Bass Lines and Synth Melodies:
Step by step instructions on how to set up a MIDI track with Live's
built-in Instruments or freely available VST instruments

Using Effects:
Learn new production techniques utilizing MIDI and audio effects,
resampling your beats, flipping them backwards, layering sounds, etc.

Sound Design:
Live lets you create radical variations of your samples in real time
by automating envelopes. The workshop will provide many examples of
the powerful ways you can tweak sounds in Live to create fresh new
sounds.

Live Performance:
There are a number of different approaches for using Ableton Live for
Live Performance. The workshop will provide you with a few different
ways of setting up your live performance document. If you like to DJ
complete tracks and add real time dub and glitch effects, Live lets
you easily map MIDI so you can control everything on the screen with
the knobs and dials of your MIDI controller, making Live performance
fun and simple. If you prefer to break out your song to stems and
then build up your tracks a little at a time, Live is the ideal tool.
The workshop will take a look at these various approaches, explaining
how artists like STS9, Girl Talk, Bassnectar, and The Glitch Mob
utilize Live in their performances.

Scoring to Picture:
Live 7 enables you to output video, making Ableton Live the ultimate
tool for scoring to picture. The workshop will explain how you can use
Ableton Live to compose music for film and commercial projects as well
as use it to creatively edit video.
