about me
MY NAME IS AMIRA MAHAELA or Mira for short.
I HAVE BEEN BELLY DANCING FOR 15 YEAR

I teach and perform several styles of Belly Dance including Egyptian, Oriental,Tribaret, Cane, Balancing, Sword Work, Veil, and Double Veil. My personal performance style is tribaret. I have performed all over the Western USA and Canada off and on over the past 12 years.

While our belly dance styles have changed over the years from the many influences of other dance styles, my main objective is to keep my Belly Dancing "Real" so that if you see my performance there is no mistaking that it is belly dancing. My deepTribal roots and heavy Egyptian influence are the basis of my belly dance style which include serpentine movement, heavy hips, and the rhythm of the drums.

How I Started Belly Dancing

When I was 5, I told my Father that I wanted to be a belly dancer. He said "no way' and proceeded to put me in ballet, tap and jazz classes for several years. But my heart was set on Belly Dance. I think it was my grandma's influence on me. She travelled all over the world dancing up a storm with The Donald O' Connor Show. Doing the Charlston and the Can Can. I used to love dressing up in her old costumes. I remember her walking around on her hands and doing the splits when she was 65. And she was always smiling and dancing...(she actually made me my first belly dance costume) She was and still is an inspiration to me and a role model.

Anyhow, I finally had the opportunity to start dancing when I moved to Seattle. My girlfriend drug (DRUG) me to a belly dance class in 1993 where I met my first instructor. The Fabulous Alexandra out of Redmond WA. She is an amazing Egyptian and Oriental dancer!

In about 1997 or so I was at an SCA event with my household and I was introduced to ATS American Tribal Style Belly Dance by the Gypsy Caravan. I was FASCINATED!! Back then there wasn't really any tribal dancing in Seattle. It was relatively new and fresh! No one had really heard of it and it definately was not main stream. Well I learned a bit of tribal dance back then and started costuming and performing in Seattle as a solo tribal dancer in some mainstream middle eastern restaraunts where I had performed regularly as a cabaret dancer.

Well lets say the public was not ready for the change quite yet. HA HA! So I mixed up my tribal dress and style with my cabaret style so I could still perform in Seattles clubs. It worked. Over the years of dancing I have developed my own unique style of dance. Most classify me as a Tribaret Dancer.

I was a member of Seattles Troupe Arabesque for 5 years. I teach classes and workshops on occasion. I have performed in The Western US and Canada off and on for several years at restaurants, Middle Eastern and Ethnic Dance Festivals.

I dance because my heart tells me to dance. My spirit embraces the rhythm. Not for fame. Not for recognition. Not for anything but the simple pure pleasure that dance brings to me. If I had to give any advice to anyone dancing is learn from your instructors but dance the dance from your heart. Make it your own.

Theres no experience in the world like my body moving with the rhythm of the drums, soft flickering firelight, and old persian rugs under foot, to capture my soul and fill my heart with joy.
