I'm a professional Middle Eastern dance (belly dance and folkloric dance) performer and instructor. I am based in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul) where I teach weekly classes and perform regularly at area restaurants and private parties. I also perform and teach workshops in other cities and states. Currently I am the artistic director with Al-Bahira Dance Theater and the Aalim School of Dance. Want to add a little Spanish-Gypsy spice to your dance performance? You won't want to miss this fabulous workshop with Toha!
Zambra Mora is the dance of the Spanish Gypsies. The forefather of flamenco dance and a cousin of orientale dance, it incorporates beautiful, stylized arm and hand movements, interesting footwork, and passionate feeling.
All levels are welcome if you have previous dance/belly dance experience. Bring a pair of dance shoes if you have them (if not, bare feet are fine), and you may also bring a full skirt to slip on over your leotard/leggings for part of the class.
Toha (Sarah Jones Larson) began began performing Spanish dance at the age of 10. She performed internationally as a child with Philadelphia's Ballet Des Jeunes and New York's Ecos De Espana. Locally, she performed with Zorongo Flamenco and Theatre de la Jeune Lune, before joining Jawaahir in 1994. She is a regular performer at Jerusalem's restaurant, and has also danced with Habiba's dance ensemble in Philidelphia.

Middle Eastern Drumming Fundamentals for Dancers and Non-Dancers with Dave Lake

Drums are the most basic building block behind Arabic and belly dance music. As a dancer, learning these rhythms and developing at least a rudimentary skill playing them yourself is invaluable! This workshop class is designed for dancers who want to learn more about drumming and rhythm, but also for drummers who want to work more effectively with dancers, for world music enthusiasts who would like to learn the basics of Arabic rhythms, and for friends and family members of dancers who are curious about this art form that has absorbed their loved ones completely. No previous drum experience is necessary.
Important notes: If you have your own tabla or frame drum, please bring it. If you do not, drums will be available to borrow.

Explore the beautiful, earthy style of raks assaya and Saidi dance in a fun, lively workshop! Today cane is often incorporated into folkloric, Orientale, and even fusion style performances. Learning to spin and hold cane is one part of the picture. Understanding elements of Saidi style (and what makes it look different from "Orientale" dance) makes a big difference in performance too! This workshop will cover cane technique, and address, combinations, stylization, and Saidi "feel" that you can incorporate into your own dance style and your own performances—folkloric or contemporary! Mirah is known for her raks assaya skill and authentic feeling. She has pursued study of the form and of Saidi styling with Egyptian dance experts in the U.S. and in Egypt.
Important notes: Bring a cane if you have one. The instructor will have canes and sticks available for students to borrow.

Khaleegy Women's Dance Workshop with Amina

Khaleegy women's dance is a social dance of the Arabian Gulf states and Saudi Arabia, recognizable by the beautifully adorned costume (thobe nasal) and hair tossing. It's also great fun and a delight for women's parties! In this workshop, you'll learn the basic steps, how to toss your hair without giving yourself whiplash (or wounding your friends or audience!), plus a short choreography. Amina has studied the Khaleegy women's dance with experts on this dance form and has taught this style in other classes and workshops. This short original choreography is lively and fun-you won't want to miss it! (Suitable for all levels.)
Important notes: Bring your own thobe if you have one, a very large flowing caftan, or two large veils (each draping to the floor when pinned together at your shoulders.) Some thobes will be available for class use, and we will also have some veils and pins available.

Dancing Dynamic Drum Solos & Working with Live Musicians with Mirah Ammal and Dr. Dave
2 hour Workshop
Dynamic drum solos are key to many belly dance shows--whether to live or prerecorded music. But, when working with live musicians, the interplay of dance and music takes on a life of its own! In this class we'll explore techniques and tips for creating dynamic drum solo performances and making your drum solos POP! --whatever style of dance you love! We'll also address some basic issues in working with live musicians and explore rhythm changes and "signals" between drummers and dancers. A seasoned drum solo performer, Mirah has worked with many live bands and percussion ensembles in both rehearsed and "pick up" situations. For this class she is joined by Dr. Dave, local tabla player.
This class will include precise technique work and combinations as well as work with a live musician. Come ready to work hard and have fun! Be aware that we will have a male drummer in the room.

Mirah Ammal & Al-Bahira Dance Theater at Arab World Fest August 9-10

Mirah Ammal and Al-Bahira Dance Theater will be performing at Milwaukee's Arab World Fest, August 9 & 10 on the Miller Stage at the Summerfest grounds. We'll perform two different shows daily--an afternoon show featuring more folkloric, balady tableau, and fusion dances, and an evening belly dance show.
(We're very excited to be returning to Milwaukee--hometown for several of our dancers--to perform for the 10-year anniversary of Milwaukee's Arab World Fest! The troupe enjoyed meeting some of the Milwaukee dancers when we were in Milwaukee in May, and Mirah has had the opportunity to meet others of you at Casablanca and other dance events--we hope to see you there!)
Arab World Fest is a huge celebration of Arabic food, culture, music, and dance celebrated on Milwaukee's lakefront at the Summerfest Festival grounds. It runs August 8-10, 2008.

ROCK YOUR RAKS ASSAYA 2: INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED CANE & SAIDI
with MIRAH AMMAL
By popular request, the next level of cane and saidi dance! Join Mirah for a fun and lively workshop on the beautiful art of raks assaya (cane dance) and earthy Saidi dance style. Learning to spin and hold the cane is onle part of the picture. Understanding elements of Saidi style (and what differentiates it from "Orientale" style) enhances your performance too. In this workshop, learn to go beyond simple cane swings and holds to capture the feeling of raks assaya. We will cover cane techniques and address combinations, stylization, and Saidi "feel" that you can incorporate into your own dance stuyle and your own performances. This workshop is intended for intermediate through advanced dancers. Some previous exposure to cane is strongly recommended. In this class, we will explore more advanced techniques, tips to make your cane movements more natural, and delve deeper into Saidi styling and musicality.
For this class, it is recommended that students have some familiarity with the cane--that they've held and or swung the cane before--or that if they have no cane experience that they have strong intermediate to advanced dance skills and familiarity working with props, as the focus of this class will be on refining cane techniques and more advanced cane maneuvers, steps, stylizations, and contemporary Saidi elements.

HOT LATIN FUSION FOR BELLY DANCE with SANA (JOANNA LESSARD)
Latin music is a common source of rhythmic and instrumental fusion inspiration for Arabic music, which creates great potential for Latin dance and belly dance fusion! But how do you ensure you understand the rhythms and steps appropriately to truly make a good fusion dance? Learn about some of the Latin music rhythms, dance steps, and feeling essential to Latin dance, especially those most commonly used with Arabic music. Sana will guide you through steps, timing and techniques, styling, arm and hand movements and help you get to the root of that authentic "Latin" feeling.
This class is taught by Sana (Joanna Lessard), a certified ballroom and Latin dance instructor with more than 12 years experience teaching Latin and ballroom dance, who also happens to be an accomplished belly dancer and member of the Al-Bahira Middle Eastern Dance Theater performance troupe.

In this workshop, Azzuri will teach special technique, timing, and transitions to bring your entrances and veil dances to the next level. Learn fun combinations you can incorporate into your own dancing. (Music for veil work may also be addressed.)
Known for her gorgeous veilwork, Azzuri Mraz is a former instructor with Bozenka's Bellydance Academy and performer with Bozenka's dance troupe, and she was recently a featured artist teaching her Veil Intensive workshop in Miami, FL. Azzuri's dance style combines power with incredible grace, and influences from various styles of dance.

Create drama, mystique, and sumptuous visuals with impecable veil technique! In this workshop, Azzuri will teach special technique, timing, and transitions to bring your entrances and veil dances to the next level. Learn fun combinations you can incorporate into your own dancing. (Music for veil work may also be addressed.)
Known for her gorgeous veilwork, Azzuri Mraz is a former instructor with Bozenka's Bellydance Academy and performer with Bozenka's dance troupe, and she was recently a featured artist teaching her Veil Intensive workshop in Miami, FL. Azzuri's dance style combines power with incredible grace, and influences from various styles of dance.
