Oh, music, sweet!

Seeing as how the word "sweet" is such a part of <our> lexicon, the following passage from Michael Pollans The Botany Of Desire struck me as nearly magical in its applicability. It would seem that we, as a (yes I'm going to say it) community have reclaimed a word from historical purgatory and once again use it in the original, and loftier manner. When I say, at work, in front of bosses and suchlike "Hey, I just got an awesome thank you letter, sweet!" I invariably take a certain amount of razzing for my unorthodox and misunderstood use of the word. It adds to my already entrenched reputation for eccentricity within the corporate mold. Maybe they think I picked it up at the burningman, and hell, maybe I did. I can't remember when the word began to morph into new/old meanings for me.

For your delectation:

"Sweetness is a desire that starts on the tongue with the sense of taste, but it doesn't end there. Or at least it didn't end there, back when the experience of sweetness was so special that the word served as a metaphor as a certain kind of perfection. When writers like Jonathan Swift used the expression "sweetness and light" to name their highest ideal, they were drawing on a sense of the word sweetness going back to classical times, a sense that has been largely lost to us. The best land was said to be sweet, so were the most pleasing sounds, the most persuasive talk, the loveliest views, and the choicest part of any whole, as when Shakespeare calls Spring the "sweet o the year". "sweet" in the archaic definition of the Oxford English Dictionary is that which "affords enjoyment or gratifies desire". The word sweetness denoted a reality commensurate with human desire. It stood for fulfillment."

That said, there are amazing, beautiful people offering up their art tonight at The Crown Room. Tis an evening of the fruition of many hours of creative labors from a whole lovely pile of talented friends. If circumstances allow, this is not to be missed. It is going to be SWEET. Old school, pre-saccharine, light ALL the chakras, not-glitch, hug yr neighbor, kiss the sky sweet.

I will be the one taking your money and blowing kisses on your way in. See ya soon.

If you can throw a dart and hit a night where there ISN'T something going on I will eat my entire shoe collection. As you noted in your blog, portland is a town that knows how to do fun...

I just realized...
...recently how Portland really is PORTAL~Land... because I always have experienced delightfully sweet rauckus and debauchery in my time there, but I talk to so many people who visit or who even lived there who tell me over and over again that Portland is a dead town with no nightlife and no culture. I look at them like they have seventeen heads: no nightlife? Holy jeez. I've almost lost my mind more times than I can count in the midst of amazing ragers in P~town... that's about when I look at those people and smile and realize that they just haven't stepped through one of the many portals into the super duper underground love nest. Poor chaps. They don't even know what they're missing... but that's ok, I'll happily keep the entrance to the portal guarded so that only the lovelies who blow butterfly kisses and wear fuzzy things on their heads can get in.

Wish I could be there tonight... but I already saw the suuuuuuper sick video =) sending kisses!

Oh
Ocelli... Sweet! Seriously, tears in my eyes! What a beautiful evening to add the reasons why I love being around you all! Chalk one up for the butterfly kissers and the multitudes of fuzzy headdresses. I think I'm addicted to you...
