something to think about..

All matter is made up of energy, and that energy is in motion continually. Everything in the universe, from the smallest molecules to the most complex living beings, has an optimal rate of vibration to keep it healthy. We reach this high vibrational level when we are whole, healthy, and fulfilling our potential. Human beings are able to consciously control these vibrations within themselves using a variety of techniques. We know when we have reached a high vibrational state because we feel good and can sense that we are aligned with all that is. We find we are capable of healing and have good intuition and perception that are a result of our resonating closer and closer to our ideal frequencies.

Thoughts, emotions, intentions, choices, and actions contribute to our vibrational state, as do the environments we inhabit. Affirmative activities that leave us feeling joyous, appreciative, loving, and peaceful raise our vibration. Constructive, creative, and expansive thoughts do the same. When we cultivate habits that contribute to our physical health and strength, our vibration is likewise raised. Certain mantra meditations, breathing exercises, and chants are designed to increase vibration. But simply practicing gratitude and forgiveness, surrounding ourselves with loving high-vibration people, eating whole foods, and spending time in nature can also help us transcend our current vibrational limitations.

When your desire for change is strong enough, you will find yourself gravitating toward what can help you achieve and maintain a high vibrational state. A positive outlook will then become the most important tool you possess, and this outlook will sustain you when the path leading toward transformation is wide and winding. As you evolve, your vibrational frequency will also evolve, aiding you in the creation of an even higher reality. Consciously and unconsciously, you will attract auspicious circumstances and positive people that will help you continue exploring the scope of your higher self until you move beyond the earthly plane.

This is pretty funny so I thought I'd share what happened today.. Kaya and I were walking into CVS in Burbank and were about to cross the parking lot in front of a new black mercedes, thinking the car was waiting for us to get across. Wrong, the car sped up right in front of us so as to not let us cross in front of them and nearly hit us. So we get in line at the pharmacy to pick up a prescription and I notice the same rude lady and guy who almost hit us get in line directly behind us. Right as they walk up my 2 year old daughter turns around and at the top of her lungs screams at the lady, "NO LADY!!! Don't come NEAR me! DON'T LOOK AT ME, YOU'RE A SCARY LADY!! YOU'RE SCAAAAAAAAAARYYY!!!!!" She *really* didn't want this scary lady looking at her! I quieted Kaya down but didn't turn to look at the scary lady cause I already knew she was a bitch who didn't even have the courtesy to let a pregnant lady and a little kid cross in front of her. So when we get up to the counter she goes to the window next to mine as I'm waiting for our prescription and they ask her last name. "Hewitt" she says.. First name? "Jennifer".. so I turn and look and sure enough it was Jennifer Love Hewitt who my little girl had just told off in line and who almost ran over a pregnant lady and toddler in the parking lot. So I laughed, cause she was totally a bitch and I'm glad that Kaya told her that she's a "SCARY LADY!!!" Kaya was right, she *was* SCARY!!!

Our 21 month old to be a little more specific. Kaya blows our minds everyday, I really still can't believe how smart she is! These are a few of the things she's doing/ into lately...

Kaya loves to play. her fav's right now are pretending to cook in her little kitchen, then feeding it to us, after cooling it down first of course. She loves to wrap up her babies and stuffed animals in blankets, then force Shane to wrap her up like a baby, repeatedly, for hours on end. She also loves to wrestle with daddy, get body slammed, jump on the trampoline, practice her kicks (she's got s pretty mean side kick already!), sommersalt, flip, and just about any other form of rough housing Shane can dish out. She loves it.
Outside in the yard she likes to hugs and kiss the dogs, look for the cats, identify interesting sounds ("Mom, did you hear that? Did you hear that noise?--What was it??"), look for bugs, draw with sidewalk chalk, run around the yard just for the sake if running, and of course finger paint. Drawing and coloring are also a daily necessity. We have to draw the whole family ("draw Daddy, draw P-Dub, Draw Grandma!"), every shape, a whole slew of animals, and various scenes.

Kaya loves to sing. Her favorite songs right now are the alphabet (has known the entire alphabet for months now), row, row, row your boat, twinkle twinkle, old macdonald, the itsy bitsy spider, jingle bells, any she will put just about any phrase she comes up with to music. she'll make and sing a song out of anything. She also has memorized many of the cd's I listen to in the car and will sing along. Her fav's right now are "The 7 Wives of Judge Dread" by Judge Dread and "Someone Loves You" by Sizzla.

Yeah, Kaya knows the alphabet. She sounds so cute when she sings it, it hurts. But, beyond just knowing the song, we've been practicing phonics for reading, and she can identify all of the letters individually. Oh, and she's pretty good about the order they go in. Now we're working on phonetics and she knows many of the sounds the letters make and can identify/ match letters and sounds. She has actually read a word on two different occasions, one was definitely by association, the other was just crazy!! She can also spell her name and try's to write it. she can usually manage a "K".

Kaya can count to 10 in Spanish and 20 in English. She loves to sort things, and is so cute when she points at things with her little finger and counts them out loud, especially when it's in Spanish! She knows a few dozen words in Spanish and when she sees someone in public that she identifies as speaking or possibly speaking Spanish, she'll yell out "Hola!" to them instead of saying "Hello". The counting in Spanish thing she totally sprung on us, it had to have been my mom who taught her that, but one day about 6 months ago I asked her if she could count something for me, and she did, in Spanish. We had no idea she could and it was definitely a surprise to hear her count to 8 in Spanish out of the blue.

Her language skills are amazing. We've been totally blown away since she started talking, but now it's just ridiculous. She's speaking in more and more complex sentences (8-10 plus words!) and better able to converse everyday. Yeah, like hold a conversation. She really has a hold on the pronouns now and correctly uses me, I, you, he/she/ his/hers/ they, this, that, etc. Her ability to verbalize abstract thoughts has lead her to start saying some of the cutest, sweetest thing our ears have ever heard. A common one lately is, "Mom/Dad/You guys make me SO happy!!" It's seriously heart melting. She has also lately been telling me, "Mom you're so beautiful!!" I damn near cried the first time she said that to me :) Another cute one is when she'll at random take off running, while yelling, "You better get me! You better come catch me, I'm CRAZY!! I'm CRAAZY!!"

Kaya enjoys, reading books, TV, playing the piano, helping me with laundry, helping me with pictures for my shop, going out to eat, taking bubble baths, and practicing sharing. She's getting much better at the concepts of sharing and cooperative play.
She's a natural animal lover and can identify most any animal and the sounds they make. She loves to tickle and get tickled. She loves to belly dance, watch belly dance, identify people she thinks are dancers and practice her moves. She's working on hip and chest slides and circles.

Kaya's favorite foods right now are broccoli, brown rice, carrots, raw garlic (yep, she's crazy. the other night she ate 4 whole cloves of raw garlic, just because), cheese, beans, bananas, berries, indian food (dal and saag are her fav's.), thai food (pad woon sen, super spicy mint rice) mashed potatoes, avocado, all kinds of squash, peas, corn, tofu. She doesn't really like juice, but will drink milk and tons of water. No longer likes hemp or rice milk. She knows what chocolate is and has been asking to go trick or treating every night since Halloween.

Kaya loves to listen and dance to music. Reggae is still her mainstay, but also enjoys belly dance stuff (arabic, egyptian, greek, etc..) some of daddy's rap and surprisingly enough, she really digs death metal! Everytime we're in the mall she wants to go into hot topic for a quick dance session. She also yells out "OPA!!" as a sign of enjoyment and appreciation of music. Still practicing the zhagareet :)

Kaya has been going pee and poop in the potty since she was 9 months old, and has been 99% potty trained since she was 18 months old. We're still using a pull up at night and for long outings, just in case. We're going to kick the pull up habit before her birthday hopefully.

She has also recently become extremely empathetic to the plight of the unhappy, screaming child in public. While out shopping, if she hears another kid crying, she'll immediately ask me if they're okay. Of course i reassure her that they're fine and just excited or expressing themselves.. but just to make sure, she'll yell out at the top of her lungs, "ARE YOU OOKAAAAY?? "

Kaya is now 34" tall, weighs 25 lbs. exactly and has 14 teeth, including 3 molars in the past week (!!). She can put on her own shoes, underwear and pants. we're working on the shirt. Kaya is extremely friendly and outgoing.

Shane and I are so proud of Kaya, proud to be her parents and blessed to know such a special little person. She has taught us so much in these past 21 months. It's still hard to believe that we built her from scratch. We are so thankful to know her. :)

A dear friend of ours had a terrible tragedy happen to her and her 7 children yesterday afternoon.. If you live in Bakersfield, you probably saw it on the news, her house caught fire and burned to the ground. Thank God everyone made it out safe and unhurt, but they are now left with nothing. The Kern Schools Federal Credit Union has a relief fund set up for her, and the Red Cross is taking donations as well. Her children range in age from 2-12, including 2 year old triplets. here's a link to the news story...

Lucky Dube shot dead in Jo'burg

Mail & Guardian Online reporter and Sapa | Johannesburg, South Africa

18 October 2007 11:38

Reggae musician Lucky Dube was shot dead in a hijacking on Thursday in Rosettenville, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said the incident took place at about 8.20pm when Dube (43) was driving in the Johannesburg suburb.

She said Dube was dropping off his son in the area when he was attacked. "His son was already out of the car. When he saw what was happening, he ran to ask for help."

The hijackers were still at large. The boy was too traumatised to provide police with any information, Engelbrecht said.

Dube, born in Johannesburg on August 3 1964, was named "Lucky" as he was born in poor health and doctors thought he would die, according to Wikipedia. But Dube survived and went on to become a front-line artist in the reggae genre. However, the singer's website, Luckydubemusic.com, says: "Giving birth to a boy was considered a blessing and his mother considered his birth so fortunate that she aptly named him Lucky."

He recorded more than 20 albums in his music career, which spanned more than 20 years, according to Luckydubemusic.com. His albums include Rastas Never Die, Think about the Children, Soul Taker and Trinity. His latest, released in 2006, is called Respect.

The build-up to this international success, though, started in 1982 with the release of Kudala Ngikuncenga, an album that was not reggae but mbaqanga, a genre that was to serve him well for four more albums until his transition to reggae in 1985.

"The change was brought about by the fact that I wanted to reach the world. With mbaqanga I would have been seen as a tourist musician," he told the Mail & Guardian in an interview in 2001.

"Don’t waste your time and mine,” a concert promoter told Richard Siluma, Dube’s producer at the time. “No one wants to hear reggae.”

By 1987, Dube was the sole reggae star among South African "disco" acts and established music acts such as Brenda Fassie, Stimela and the Soul Brothers.

His introduction to the international stage was heartening, such as when he was invited to play at the Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica in 1991. He recalled how the spiritual home of reggae had been waiting for him and his band. "We knew they love the music. They said we remind them of Peter Tosh." On the final evening of the festival they were called back for an encore -- and for another performance the next year.

The reggae sensation, who did not drink or smoke cigarettes or marijuana, despite the association of the substance with Rastafarians, had won more than 20 awards for his music contribution locally and internationally. He is the only South African artist to have a record signed to Motown Records, according to Luckydubemusic.com.

His reception on the international stage had been mixed, however. European audiences had argued that he sang world music and local audiences felt his music had changed to an extent that it flew over them.

This did not seem to bother him. "We have found that locally the audience does not grow with you. People expect me to still be doing Ayobayo, yet that was 1987 and this is 2001," he said in the M&G interview.

Dube always had to fend off questions of whether he was Rastafarian. "If Rastafarianism is about having dreadlocks, smoking marijuana and believing that Haile Selassie is God, then I am not Rastafarian. But if it is about political, social and personal consciousness, then, yes, I am," he said.

Although his idol was Peter Tosh, he acknowledged the unshakeable influence of the king of reggae, Bob Marley, whom he described as "the reason we know reggae".

well, i'm officially a mommy :D it's the most awesome thing i've ever done, and the most amazing experience possible...
her name is Kaya and she was born on saturday afternoon at 2:10 pm, but the whole birth experience was TOTALLY unexpected! we had been planning a home birth, and were all set up to have her here at home, we brought our jacuzzi inside so i could labor in the water, and had everything set up, but ended up having to have her at the hospital. i had been getting prenatal care through my midwives as well as through kaiser, so for the last month and a half i've had 2 appts. a week, one with the midwives, and one with kaiser... also over the last month my blood pressure had been slowly creeping up, and since i was going to be having her at home, i was having to basically be on bed rest inorder to keep the blood pressure down and under control. well at my midwives appt. on weds. they heard a deceleration in the babies heart beat, so they sent me over to kaiser to get a non stress test and bloodwork done, the results of both came back fine, and they said the decel. was probably from the baby being on the umbilical cord....thats was weds... on friday morning i had my prenatal appt. at kaiser, and the same thing happened, they heard a small deceleration in her heart beat, so they sent me in for another non stress test and more lab work... the results of both came back totally fine again, but they sent me over to labor and delivery to get some more monitoring done just to be safe... since that was the second time it had happened, combined with my high blood pressure, they suggested that i give birth at the hospital so that we could be monitored full time..well, okay, i was kinda bummed because i really didn't want to have her at the hospital, but we weren't going to take any chances and agreed to give birth at the hospital.... BUT, they wanted me to give birth as soon as possible to avoid my blood pressure from getting any higher, so they said they'd like to induce me. that was a real drag, but again, whatever was necessary to make sure we were all safe, so i called my midwife and she came over to the hospital and spoke with the doctors and went over all the options for induction with me...they decided we should start with cervadil to ripen the cervix. they gave me the cervadil at 5pm, and shane and i slept in a labor room there at the hospital waiting for it to take effect.... very, VERY unexpected since we had just gone in for our regular appt. on friday morning, not at all expecting to be having to stay! anyways, the next morning they started me on pitocin at 9 am.. nothing was happening, no contractions are signs of labor yet, i was only dialated to 1 cm, but had been for the last week... at 10 am with still no signs of labor the doctor came in and broke my water, and BAM!!!! immediately i was contracting like a mofo!! it was VERY intense to say the least, and very painful. i was having contractions every couple of minutes, with maybe 30 seconds break inbetween. very intense. i dialated from i cm to 4 in about an hour, then from 4 to 10 in about another hour or so... the pushing was surprisingly easy, that only took about 30 minutes, and i delivered kaya at 2:10 pm, after 4 hrs and 10 minutes of labor, start to finish. she weighed only 5lbs. 8 oz. and was 18.5 inches long, and SO BEAUTIFUL. it was the coolest thing i've ever experienced. she's so tiny and so cute! i can't wait to show her off to everyone!
