What is a mystery school?
In the cosmology of the ancient mystery schools, the self was holy, the natural link to the universal holiness that contained and nurtured all life. Students were presented with wisdom and practices that awakened the senses and cognition of the soul. Trials and tribulations provided the purification that transformed psychological distortions, limiting beliefs, and blockages that inhibited the creative flow of spiritual energy. Various initiations provided direct linkage to transcendental sources of understanding, healing and grace. Life itself was their textbook, revealing the mysteries by reflecting the inner worlds through the metaphor of living, and the change of relationships. This cosmology is also true today.
The mystery schools formed the milieu out of which the great religions of the world developed. The great teachers such as Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tze, Hermes, Quetzalcoatl, Melchizadek, Rumi are examples of individuals who had merged with the universal Holiness to varying degrees. They each were part of the mystery school tradition, renewing and transforming the schools into which they were born. Each had a differing mission, some as world teachers and messiahs, others to preserve the teaching or to prepare the way.
Understanding the deeper mysteries requires a degree of preparation and development. For that reason the schools presented an inner and outer teaching. This left each lineage vulnerable to political influence. Buddhist, Hindu, and Taoist teaching, for example, retain a degree of their depth. Christianity, though profound in its inception, divested itself of its mystery school associations at the Council of Nicea in 320 A.D. This did not end the Christian mystery school. It merely split the school into a political, official church and an esoteric underground. Gnostic enclaves preserved some of the teachings.
