If you've never seen any of the illustrated tales by Edward Gorey, aka Ogred Weary, you must check this out!

His work is very dark and twisted, and supposedly was a huge influence on Tim Burton. Too bad all the details of his drawings aren't done justice here.

the melancholy death of oyster boy
yes you can see how strong gorey's influence was on burton in subtle and then some not so subtle ways. Aside from his art work which is so remenecent of his predecessor "the melancholy death of oyster boy " will always bring that home for me. My favorite work of goreys is "the curious sofa" and some day when you come by I will bust out "the chap in the cap" which is a spoof of "the cat in the cat" a la gorey style. Also, gorey was a big advocate of literacy and made several illustrations to promote his love of books, which are thankfully still commercially available as well as his memorable books. (beg the question, should I read this to my kid right before bed?)

Yeah...I love him! I've got Amphigory I and II. I've been trying to decide if The Gashlycrumb Tinies are appropriate for little Sam. Hmmmmm....
