Rubystine, the mother of my children joined the Ancestors on July1, 2008 after a long illness. She will remain with us as long as we retain cherished memories of the good times we had together. So, in remembering her, we strengthen her. In strengthening her we ask her to strengthen us.

In my world which is deeply rooted in the Southern Black experience, there is a deep chasm between the way Black people perceive reality and the way white people see that same reality. In a curious way, the recent controversy regarding the Presidential election underscores those differences. Deep inside the Black community there remains a mistrust of the government and those who represent the institutions of government. There is ample justification for that mistrust, given the country's track record in dealing with African Americans, Native Americans, etc. and the US Foreign Policies. There will definately be changes in the national government following the next election. The fruitfulness of those changes is another matter all together. Regardless of the cosmetic changes which will occur as a result of the 2008 Presidential Election, certain aspects of how this country operates in the world will not change: The nation of Israel will continue to receive the lion's share of US foreign aid. It will continue to receive more foreign aid than will be given to the whole continent of Africa. The US will continue to meddle in the affairs of other nations. In conjunction with this, the CIA will continue to engage in covert military action using its secret army. The next President will be charged with putting a new face on the US presence in the world. I think that Barak Obama is uniquely positioned to perform that function. However, since we are living in a period without historical precedents, practically anything can happen. The only certainty is change.

Still Chewing the Fat and Wondering Out Loud

For a long time, I have heard it said that this country is not "ready" for a black President. I wonder what it means to be "ready" for a Black President. In the case of Barak Obama, it seems that the invisible forces have continually woven a racial web with which to snare him. It has worked in spite of his noble efforts to transcend racial issues and focus upon national and global concerns. The sound bites, inferences, and questioning of his readiness to be the President are not only political in nature they are attempts to define him as a man. I n his recent decision to leave his church of 20 years, it seems to me Obama is caving in to the attempts to define his spirituality. Surely leaving the church will not satisfy those who are determined to defeat him. I am wondering what direction the race to be President will take next. What will Hillary Clinton's supporters do next to defeat Obama? The difference between Clinton and McCain is becoming blurry when it comes to opposition to Obama. From the outset, I have been doubtful about Obama becoming President, not because I do not think he is capable of serving. It is just that I have never had much faith in this country electing a Black person to that position. With Obama's successes thus far, I am more hopefull - still skeptical but nervously optomistic. There truly does seem to be a new mood in the nation and a movement toward real social change on a scale which we have not seen since the 1960's. It really does seem to be time for the torch to be passed again to a new generation of leadership with a fresh new global vision for this country's place in the world. All the key leaders in the struggle of the 1960's were assassinated before the end of the decade. Clinton's recent inference concerning the assasination of Bobby Kennedy left me wondering. Is there anything the Clintons will not do to gain "power"? Also, her remarks concerning her being more electable because she has the support of working class "white" people made me go "hmmmm". Every day or two she is making new moves to secure a place for herself as the President. I am wondering - what will she will do next?

What Is Next, Hillary?

I have been thinking about Senator Clinton's remarks on April 23 concerning why she is staying in the race for nomination to be President through the month of June. Her past justifications for staying in the race have been varied and complex. At times she speaks of the numbers. At other times she speaks of her supporters encouragement. It is well known that she, her husband, and others have said rather uncomplimentary things about Obama directly and through inference. Indirect inference seems to be their tool of choice. It is hard to pinpoint the intent of an inference and where it originates. A case in point is the fact that immediately after she made the remark about the assasination of Robert Kennedy, she and others began to explain what she said. She said what she said and that is it. I have heard the remarks over and over again in the 24 hours since they were made. Some people say she made a mistake or gaffe as they say in political circles. However, she has made those same remarks on at least three other occasions. In responding to a question concerning why she was still in the race, she first made reference to how her husband had stayed in the 1992 race through June and had prevailed. She followed that remark up with one in which she mentioned that Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June of 1968. I think she paired up the remarks about her husband's triumph and the one about Bobby Kennedy's demise intentionally. The similarity between Bill Clinton's triumph and that of Bobby Kennedy rests with the fact that they both triumphed in the state of California during the month of June. She did not say that. With reference to Kennedy she just said that he was shot during the month of June. Barak Obama, like Bobby Kennedy, is an idealist, a visionary determined to change the course of the nation during difficult times. He enjoys widespread popular support. He has been the object of death threats since he first annouced his candidacy for President. So much so that he has more Secret Service protection than the current President. So, for her to utter any remarks concerning an assassination when she is likely to lose the race for President is at best disconcerting. Before she made the remarks, there was talk about how Obama has problems attracting the support of blue collar white people. There was also talk about how poplar she is among that group. When asked why she is staying in the race: Why couldn't she say she is staying i the race because it is her right to do so? Why could she not say she is staying in the race because all the states have not had their Primaries? Why could she not say that she is staying in the race because it is not over until June when a decision will be made until June? Why could she not say she is going to fight to the bitter end and after that she is going to let the chips fall where they may? I wonder. This is an intelligent and articulate woman who has had a career as a very successful attorney and senator. She has been in public life a long time. No. What she said was no mistake. It was a calculated message which can be read in a number of different ways as not to pinpoint responsibility. We just have to wait and see what happens next.

One of the benefits of the current political season for me has been the references in the news which have been made to some individual who I admire. Having come of age during the 1950s and 1960s, much of my world view has been influenced and even shaped by prominent people of that era. It was an era of struggle and immense social change. Recently political prognosticators and news people have deemed my heroes to be racists, lunatics, or just plain nasty. The only exception being Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandella. That caused me to truly understand how out of step my way of thinking is with the "mainstream" of American thought. Here are some of my heroes from that era: Jomo Kenyatta Malcolm X Louis Farrakhan Yasir Arafat Fidel Castro Kwame Nkrumah WEB Du Bois I think that admiration of these people places me in some good company.

Anxiously Awaiting the Presidential Elections

Looking back over the past Presidential Administrations, I cannot help but think that there is a larger scheme in operation which has nothing to do with who is President. I see a hint of it in the themes which the Presidents have chosen for their Administrations. Just something to think about: The first George Bush spoke of a "NEW WORLD ORDER" Bill Clinton told us that her was going to build a "BRIDGE TO THE 21st CENTURY" The second George Bush spoke of "BENEVOLENT CONCERVITIVISM". The next thing we knew we were fighting and still fighting a "GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR BASED IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN". The ECONOMY of the United States is in a state of CRISIS due to the daily rise in the price of oil, particularly that which is coming out of the MIDDLE EAST. I am anxious to see the outcome of the Presidential Election and what will be in the next chapter of this political saga. I have not read any of Paul Wolfowitz's writings but I believe that I should.

It is no secret that I support Barak Obama for President. My rationale is that there is always a proper time to pass the torch to a new generation of leadership in any venue. As a sixty year old, I feel that the time is now for us sixty year olds to look up to the next generation and usher forth the new generation. In my feeble minded way of thinking, I feel that passing the torch to the next generation is more beneficial than passing it backwards which is what the candidacy John Mc Cain represents. Or passing it laterally which is what the candidacy of Hillary Clinton represents. McCain has too many ideas which seem to be warmed over or rehashed versions of the Bush Administration policies. I am sure he has the same think tank and strategists in place set to resume the Republican agenda which is already in place. There truly is, in my view, time for the country to turn the page and take off in a completely new direction. The problem with Hillary Clinton is that she too represents a digression into the past. I am troubled by the fact that Bill Clinton once spoke of his administration as "getting two for the price of one". Why did he make that statement? Was Hillary the "co-president" of the United States at the time? Who wanted her to be "co-president"?We must not forget also that the first Clinton Administration was sandwiched between 12 years of the Reagan- Bush Administration and 8 years of the second Bush Administration. So, the Clinton's represent a digression into the past just as much as John McCain. I wonder what was her true role in the Clinton Presidency? How much "pillow talk" influenced Bill Clinton's Presidency and will that "pillow talk" influence Hillary's Presidency? I wonder what Bill Clinton's true role in a new Clinton Presidency will be - being the husband of the President? I wonder about Bill Clinton's womanizing ways and if that says anything about her sexual appetite as well? I wonder if passing the torch laterally to the wife of a former President who is set to return to the White House in a different capacity truly is progress for the nation? Of course, I am just wondering.

Hillary Clinton's War on Barak Obama

I have been tuning in and tuning out the recent political activity. The pundits and prognosticators are saying that Hillary Clinton's onslaught of negative campaigning against Barak Obama is meant to tear him down and pave the way for McCain. They are saying that she really has here sight set on the 2012 Presidential Election. One thing pople are talking about is the fact that Hillary Clinton was a Republican in 1964 and worked as a campaign aide for Barry Goldwater, then Senator from Arizona (McCain's home state). Everything she is saying about Reverend Wright, Obama's electibility, Obama's lack of "experience", his "elitism", etc. constitute bomb making material which the Republicans are sure to use in their carpet bombing of Obama in the very short General Election between late August and late November. That is, should Obama win the Democratic Nomination. There are surely other fronts where she is fighting the negative underhanded war on Obama. One is the deep doo doo of the Michigan and Florida Primaries. Another has to do with the decisions of the "Super" Delegates. We will just have to wait and see how the whole thing plays out. I am sure the funk will get a lot stronger by the end of the Primary season and stench will become unbearable.

I am just wondering about Senator Hillary Clinton. She has always worn the pants in her household. She was a Senior Partner in the Rose Law Firm while Bill was Governor in Arkansas, making far more money and garnering far more power and prestige in the business community. Bill always has been a whore monger and a smooth talker too. There are a lot of skeletons in their closets which will probably never be discovered because Hillary has the doors nailed shut and well guarded. The prospects of seeing Bill Clinton in the White House as a house husband just does not fit well with me. What we need now is a big sex scandal focusing on Hillary with Bill giving explicit interviews to the tabloids and filing for a divorce on the eve of the General Election. He really needs to rebuild his manhood and avoid becoming a house husband.

Mice sought violence, in fact, picking fights for no apparent reason other than the rewarding feeling. The mouse brain is thought to be analogous to the human brain in this study, which could shed light on our fascination with brutal sports as well as our own penchant for the classic bar brawl. In fact, the researcher say, humans seem to crave violence just like they do sex, food or drugs. Love to fight Scientists have known that mice and other animals are drawn to fights. Until now, they didn't know how the brain was involved. The new study, detailed online this week in the journal Psychopharmacology, reveals the same clusters of brain cells involved in other rewards are also behind the craving for violence. "Aggression occurs among virtually all vertebrates and is necessary to get and keep important resources such as mates, territory and food," said study team member Craig Kennedy, professor of special education and pediatrics at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. "We have found that the reward pathway in the brain becomes engaged in response to an aggressive event and that dopamine is involved." Mouse brawl For the experiments, the researchers placed a pair of mice, one male and one female, in a cage. Then, the female was removed and a so-called male intruder mouse entered the cage. That triggered aggressive behavior in the resident male. The tell-tale signs of aggression included tail rattle, an aggressive sideways stance, boxing and biting. After the initial scuffle ended, the resident male mouse was trained to nose-poke a target to get the intruder to return. Results showed the home mouse consistently poked the target and fought with the introduced mouse, indicating, the researchers say, that the aggressive encounter was seen as a reward. "We learned from these experiments that an individual will intentionally seek out an aggressive encounter solely because they experience a rewarding sensation from it," Kennedy said. To figure out whether the brain's reward pathway was involved, the scientists treated the home mice with a drug to block dopamine in certain parts of the brain known to be involved in rewards like food and drugs. The treated mice were less likely to instigate the intruder's entry. “This shows for the first time that aggression, on its own, is motivating, and that the well-known positive reinforcer dopamine plays a critical role," Kennedy said. Human violence Kennedy explained that the experiments have implications for humans. The reward pathway in the brains of humans and mice are very similar, he said. "Aggression is highly conserved in vertebrates in general and particularly in mammals," Kennedy told LiveScience. "Almost all mammals are aggressive in some way or another." He added, "It serves a really useful evolutionary role probably, which is you defend territory; you defend your mate; if you're a female, you defend your offspring." Even though it served a purpose for other animals, in modern human societies, Kennedy said, a propensity toward aggression is not beneficial and can be a problem. Here I am up late at night. It just occurred to me that if people want to invade this country they can do it using a number of remote control devices. The President has developed a habit of saying that "we are fighting them over there so they wont follow us home to fight us here" when speaking of the reason why this country cannot find its way out of Iraq and why it has already put in motion a plan to get in deeper doo doo by invading Iran. Those enemies are quite stupid people but they are not stupid enough to come over here in large numbers for the purpose of fighting. I do not think they all want to go on a suicide mission. If they did, who would be left to fight. They have already sent their troops by remote control. They are whipping the living daylight out of us, one by one, by sucking every penny we can rake and scrape out of our pockets. Just as soon as the weather changes - we get an annoucement that heating oil will soon rise. At the same time, the price of gasoline goes up to an average of 3.00 per gal. The speculation is that it will eventually go much, much , much higher. And they wonder why people are going on strike. The reasons for the escalating gas prices are becoming more and more convoluted and complicated each time one is given. We need do what people did in many of the Middle Eastern and Latin American countries did long ago - Nationalize the oil countries. They are killing us with the prices and loving every minute of it. The enemy has arrived. Let's go git em boys!

Why did they execute the tree? They cut the tree down and hawled it away. Where did they take it and what did they do with the wood? The tree never called anyone "nigger". Perhaps execution of the tree was the ultimate sin. The tree was just there doing what trees do, receiving nourishment from the atmosphere and th soil, going through the seasonal changes, providing shade for whoever or whatever decides to rest in the shade of its branches, using carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen simultaneously. So, I wonder why was the tree made to suffer? Human beings designated it a "white tree". Human beings decided that no Black people should sit under the shade of the "white tree". Human beings decided to hang nooses from the branches of the "white tree" after Black youths sat in its shade. The case of the Jena Six has been all over the news lately including that of a huge rally where people from all over the nation convened in the little town of Jena, Louisiana to march and rally in support of the six black boys who beat and kicked a white boy unconscious because the white boy had called one of the Blacks a "nigger". He is one of the white youths responsible for hanging nooses on the tree. The case is both a source of amusement and sorrow for me. We all know that white people learned long ago that it was not in their interest to refer to Black people as niggers in public or at least in the presence of Black people. Perhaps, that reality is not communicated very well to some white youth. Black people will never really know what many white people continue to teach their children and talk about at home and among their friends and family members. Perhaps, the consequences of using the term "nigger" is not communicated very well by white parents to their children. At the same time, many Black parents are guilty of not providing their children with the emotional armor they need to confront the realities of living in a racially divisive and white oriented society. Being called a "nigger" by a white person will be the least of their problems as they grow older and struggle to advance in the society. One thing which will never be in their best interest is beating the living daylights of everybody who hurls insults of any kind at them. Sometimes, people will insult you just to see you squirm. As you squirm, they will order refreshments.

When I think about what is happening in the country today. I think that the United States is yearning for increased hedonism in its outlook on the world. The citizenry is not convinced that we are living in a world of enemies out to get us. The government knows that our foreign policy has garnered us more than our fair share of enemies but it will not admit it. It does, however know that we have more than enough fire power to match and defeat any enemy which we confront. Whether or not our moral resolve can match that of the rest of the world is another question. So, as a nation we are in a quagmire both in the Middle East and at home. The more we wiggle it seems the deeper we sink. It is an awful dilemma to face. It has been said that time will heal all wounds. I certainly hope so. It will take more than the current level of thinking to get us past the current national myopia which seems to cloud our judgment and divide us into liberals and conservative. A very sobering paradigm shifting is in order in all sectors of society. I prefer to spend my time admiring women such as Bea.

Musings About A Dangerous World

As we approach the anniversary of the 911 hijacking, the Iraq violence rages on and the body count continues to rise. I can remember the President declaring that there was an "axis of evil" in the world and that those in the world who were not with us were against us in waging war. Iraq was considered part of the axis of evil. A radio personality in Memphis, Tennessee declared that "somebody is going to have to pay" (for the 911 hijackings and crashings of planes into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and field in rural Pennsylvania). Eventually someone was selected to pay for those deeds. It was Saddam Hussein and his country of Iraq. He was considered a friend of terrorism although no Iraqis were among the 911 hijackers. He was the weakest link in the axis of evil (easiest to defeat with few casualties on the part of the US military), most enemies, etc.) and the most likely candidate for the wrath of the around the clock US airstrikes. Iraq was literally bombed into submission before the invasion of ground troops. The actual mission really was accomplished in the bombing followed by the invasion. What has happened since that time is interesting grounds for well founded speculation and conspiracy theories. I could not help but stop and think about the current political climate in the United States upon hearing the most recent news regarding the so called war in Iraq. I can remember quite clearly the political climate when the so called war started. It was an invasion to disarm the Saddam Regime of weapons of mass destruction. The key to understanding what has happened in the intervening years is an awareness of the foreign policy of the country and how it evolves. It is a smoke and mirrors magic trick. You have to watch all aspects of the magicians movements and the props he uses as well as those of his assistants. During the course of the invasion, the entire infrastructure of the country was destroyed. The first realization for the public in the United States following the invasion was that the weapons of mass destruction could not be found nor could anyone account for what actually happened to them. How could that be? The question remains to be answered. The next thing we knew was that the President landed a jet on an aircraft carrier and stood in front of a banner with the words MISSION ACCOMPLISHED declaring victory in the invasion. The war raged on. As days, months, and years passed the mission justifying the war morphed into something totally different from the one used when it started. The next justification was that Saddam Hussein was the most evil dictator on earth and the whole planet as better off without him. So, the US captured him after he survived 40 days of bombing and oversaw his execution. That mission accomplished, the search was on for another justification for the US presence in Iraq. At some point President Bush said that the so called war on terror would go on for the forseeable future. That being said and given the link which had already been made between Iraq and the war on terror, it is conceivable that the US had planned to be in Iraq for a long time. There was no public outcry over the President's statement concerning the length of time he anticipated the US would be waging war on terror. Eventually the situation morphed into one where we are in a "war" to fight an enemy over there so we wont have to fight them over here. Now that is the justification they were searching for all along. That justification arouses the fear of a lot more US citizens than one involving terror or Al Quiada or even Bin Laden himself. Interestingly, it seems as though we are in an open ended "war" with no real fronts, no identifiable sides, and most importantly, no consensus concerning why the war is being fought in the first place. In order to understand the nature of the conflict and the US role in it, I am paying very close attention to what the Presidential candidates are saying, the continuing evolution of US foreign policy, as well as the international developments.

ERIC Digest. Young Black males in contemporary American society face major challenges to their development and well-being. Social and economic indicators of Black male development provide a profile of an individual whose quality of life is in serious jeopardy. Significantly, the literature in recent years has referred to the young Black male as an endangered species (Gibbs, 1988). From an early age, it has become increasingly apparent that Black males are confronted with a series of obstacles in their attempts to attain academic, career and personal-social success. THE BLACK MALE IN AMERICA'S SCHOOLS Black male youth face formidable challenges to their educational development. Statistics on educational attainment would suggest that many Black youth are at-risk in the nation's schools. However, a closer examination of the data indicates that Black males are at greatest risk. According to Reed (1988): 1. The overall mean achievement scores for Black male students are below those of other groups in the basic subject areas. 2. Black males are much more likely to be placed in classes for the educable mentally retarded and for students with learning disabilities than in gifted and talented classes. 3. Black males are far more likely to be placed in general education and vocational high school curricular tracks than in an academic track. 4. Black males are suspended from school more frequently and for longer periods of time than other student groups. 5. Black females complete high school at higher rates than Black males. Such data are compounded by the fact that Black males are frequently the victims of negative attitudes and lowered expectations from teachers, counselors, and administrators. Educators may expect to encounter academic and social problems from Black males, which often leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy (Washington & Lee, 1982). Frustration, underachievement or ultimate failure, therefore, often comprise the contemporary educational reality for scores of Black male youth. It is evident that Black males from kindergarten through high school tend to experience significant alienation from America's schools. The consequences of this are major limitations on socioeconomic mobility, ultimately leading to high rates of unemployment, crime, and incarceration for massive numbers of young Black men. PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG BLACK MALES Theorists such as Erikson (1950) have suggested that major aspects of human development unfold in a series of life stages. As individuals progress through the life stages, they must achieve a series of developmental tasks. The achievement of these tasks at one stage of life influences success with tasks in succeeding stages. When considering the psychosocial development of young Black males, it is important to note that social, cultural and economic forces throughout American history have combined to keep Black males from assuming traditional masculine roles (Staples, 1982). The historical persistence of these forces and limited access to masculine status have generally resulted in significant social disadvantage for Black males. In many cases, this disadvantage has prevented them from mastering crucial developmental tasks in childhood and adolescence, which in turn negatively influences their academic, career, and social success in later stages of life. AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE: ITS IMPORTANCE TO BLACK MALE SOCIALIZATION Empowerment interventions for young Black males must take into account African/African American culture and its crucial role in fostering socialization. An examination of core Black culture (i.e., those attitudes, values and behaviors which have developed in homogeneous Black communities where rudimentary Afrocentric ways have been preserved in relatively large measure), will reveal that many Black boys are socialized within a cultural tradition that places a high premium on group-centered cooperation and fosters development through cognitive, affective, and behavioral expressiveness (Nobles, 1980; Pasteur & Toldson, 1982). The cultural dimensions of Black male socialization can often be seen in peer group interactions among boys. Within these groups young boys often develop unique and expressive styles of behavior sometimes referred to as "cool pose" (Majors, 1986). "Cool pose" has a significant relationship with optimal mental health and well-being for young Black males. Observing Black male youth, the dimensions associated with "cool pose" are readily apparent in such phenomena as the expressiveness of rap music or athletic prowess. EMPOWERMENT INTERVENTIONS: GUIDELINES FOR ACTION The academic and social challenges which confront Black male youth in the school setting suggest a pressing need for programmed intervention on the part of educators. Counselors committed to the cause of Black male empowerment can play an active role in promoting developmental initiatives at both the elementary and secondary level. Such initiatives must focus on helping Black male youth develop attitudes, behaviors, and values necessary to function at optimal levels at school and in the world. Young Black males need specific guidance to master educational challenges. Such guidance might be provided through culture-specific developmental group counseling experiences in the elementary or secondary school setting. These empowerment experiences should develop the attitudes and skills necessary for academic achievement, foster positive and responsible behavior, provide opportunities to critically analyze the image of Black men, expose participants to Black male role models, and develop a sense of cultural and historical pride in the accomplishments of Black men. Four general guidelines are suggested for the development of any school-based empowerment strategies: Empowerment strategies should be developmental in nature. Far too often, the only guidance young Black males receive comes after they have committed an offense against the social order. Generally the goal of such guidance is not development, but rather punishment. Concerned counselors should act in a proactive manner to help empower Black male youth to meet challenges that often lead to problems in school and beyond. Empowerment strategies should provide for competent adult Black male leaders. This is important for two reasons. First, only a Black man can teach a Black boy how to be a man. By virtue of attaining adult status as Black and male, he alone has the gender and cultural perspective to accurately address the developmental challenges facing Black boys. While Black women and individuals of both sexes from other ethnic backgrounds can play a significant role in helping to empower young Black males, it is only a Black man who can model the attitudes and behaviors of successful Black manhood. Second, there is a paucity of Black male educators in American schools. It is not unusual for a Black boy to go through an entire school career and have little or no interaction with a Black male teacher, counselor, or administrator. When necessary, therefore, efforts should be made to actively recruit, train, and support competent Black men who can serve as leaders or role models in empowerment interventions. Empowerment strategies should incorporate African/African American culture. Counselors should find ways to incorporate African American (Black) cultural dimensions into the empowerment process for young Black males. Culture-specific approaches to counseling intervention transform basic aspects of Black life, generally ignored or perceived as negative in the traditional educational framework, into positive developmental experiences. For example, Black art forms (e.g., music, poetry) and culture-specific curriculum materials might be incorporated into empowerment interventions as counseling or educational aids. Empowerment strategies should include some type of "Rites-of-Passage" ceremony. Unlike the traditions of African culture where great significance was attached to the transition from boyhood to manhood, there is little ceremony in Black American culture for the formal acknowledgement of life transitions for young boys. It is important, therefore, that at the completion of any empowerment experience for Black boys there is some ceremonial acknowledgement of their accomplishment. Parents and men from the community should be encouraged to participate in such "rites-of-passage" ceremonies. EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY FOR BLACK MALE STUDENTS As previously mentioned, the academic and social problems confronting Black male students are often exacerbated by the attitudes and practices of educators, which often suggest a lack of sensitivity or understanding of Black culture and the dynamics of male development. Counselors committed to Black male empowerment, therefore, may need to assume the role of educational advocate. Educational advocacy involves consultation activities initiated by counselors to help their fellow educators better understand the dynamics of male development from a Black perspective and make the teaching-learning process more relevant to Black male realities. The following are guidelines for such consultation activities: Educator attitudes and behavior. It is an educator's unalterable responsibility to challenge and to change any attitudes or behaviors which may be detrimental to the welfare of Black male students. Educational advocates, therefore, should help school personnel: (1) examine the incidence of discipline in the classroom to ensure that Black males are not receiving a disproportionate share of reprimands or negative feedback; (2) delineate and challenge stereotypes they may have acquired about Black boys and their expectations of them; and (3) develop an understanding of gender and cultural diversity. Curriculum content and methods. Optimal learning occurs when a Black male perceives that he and his unique view of the world is appreciated. Educational advocates, therefore, should help school personnel: (1) find ways to integrate the accomplishments of Black men into the existing curriculum structure, and (2) continuously examine the curriculum to ensure that Black males are included in primary and nonstereotyped roles. Ensuring role model presence. In addition to increasing the number of Black male educators, strategies must be aimed at compensating for role model absence in the school setting. Educational advocates, therefore, should help school personnel: (1) find ways to ensure the inclusion of Black males in classroom activities as tutors, educational assistants, storytellers, "room fathers," and field trip escorts; (2) find ways to encourage the participation of Black males in Parent-Teacher Associations and other school organizations; and (3) acknowledge the importance of non-educational personnel (e.g., Black male custodians and lunchroom staff) as valid mentors/role models and find ways to use them in the educational process wherever possible. A Ghost From The Past

This is a view of the Paramount, the largest movie theater in Clarksdale, that Black people saw whenever they wanted to see a movie which was showing there when I was a child. Children paid ten cents and adults paid twenty five cents. We had to enter the theater by first buying a ticket at the window on the left (now boarded up) and then climbing the fire escape and entering through a balcony door. The ticket taker also sold snacks just inside the door. The audience was segregated with white people sitting on the lower level. After the theater was intergrated in the late 1960s I can remember continuing to see movies by buying the ten cents tickets in the alley rather going to the front of the theater where admission for children was twenty five cents. Most of the time I went to the Tyson Theater on South Edwards Street or the New Roxy Theater on Issaquena Avenue which catered to an exclusively Black audience just a few blocks away.

The Power of Now

I was reading a friend's blog concerning her regrets about choices she made in her life and how she probes the possibility of doing things over again. I commented on her musings with some of my own views. I had completely forgotten these words but decided to place them here because they seem so relevant to my train of thought today: The Power of Now I suppose I see life as an epic saga with a beginning , a middle, and an ending. This is the only world I know and I am afraid of hedging my bets on doing it all over again if I don't get it right this time. I believe in the profound nature of the saying that we all fall short of the grace of God. All humans, therefore are imperfect and prone to errors and mistakes. I view life through a sports analogy - life is like a football game, you run a play - if you do not succeed - you regroup and try, and try again. It is all one big struggle. One key is being careful with whom you surround yourself. Surround yourself with people who can help you win - physically, psychologically, and spiritually. I believe in the necessity of making the most of the Power of Now. Now is all we will ever have.

The Intrinsic Value of Michael Vick

I have been listening to the sports pundits lately speculating, calculating, and betting on the future of Michael Vick. I admit that I was saddened at the news of his demise in the court of public opinion as revelations of the criminal case against him unfolded. His guilt or innocence and the outcome of his case is a matter of how kind the legal system treats him. I was saddened at how quickly such a talented athlete has become a statistic. Most Black men in this country can expect to have some trouble with the law at least once in their lifetime. Most Young Black males today are either serving time, on probation, on parole, in custoday, or scheduled to go to trial. That is a fact of Black life in this country. Each time I look into his face as he is accompanied to court by the deputies, I think of my son. My son has found himself in custody like Michael Vick for different reasons. People speculate concerning how Michael Vick got himself into such serious trouble. I wondered briefly the same thing about my own son. How could he? My son's role models in his home obeyed the law, were ambitious, hard working people with a bright view of his future. My son was taught the difference between right and wrong. He was chastised when he did wrong as a child and praised whenever he did the right things. We tried to instill those values in him. His mother and I always did our best to provide for him when he was a child and cautioned him about his choice of friends as he came of age. I am sure somewhere along the way, Michael Vick received tuteledge similar to that which my son received. A lot of speculation has been floating around lately concerning Michael Vick’s future. How much jail time will he face? What will happen to him after he has been released. Michael Vick’s future is up to him. He can either sink into a world filled with criminal activity and spend his life behind bars or he can shun that world altogether and live a fruitful and meaningful life. Certainly, I think that Michael Vick’s intrinsic value in society has to extend beyond his ability to play football. His current predicament has to be brewing up inside him yearnings to fulfill himself in terms of his cognitive strengths away from the sports playing field. I wish him well and hopes that he takes the criminal case as a lesson learned and go on living a productive life.

Philosopher/Soldier's Suicide in Iraq Interesting, albeit tragic, story here; an excerpt: One hot, dusty day in June, Col. Ted Westhusing was found dead in a trailer at a military base near the Baghdad airport, a single gunshot wound to the head. The Army would conclude that he committed suicide with his service pistol. At the time, he was the highest-ranking officer to die in Iraq.... Col. Westhusing was no ordinary officer. He was one of the Army's leading scholars of military ethics, a full professor at West Point who volunteered to serve in Iraq to be able to better teach his students. He had a doctorate in philosophy; his dissertation was an extended meditation on the meaning of honor. So it was only natural that Westhusing acted when he learned of possible corruption by U.S. contractors in Iraq. A few weeks before he died, Westhusing received an anonymous complaint that a private security company he oversaw had cheated the U.S. government and committed human rights violations. Westhusing confronted the contractor and reported the concerns to superiors, who launched an investigation. In e-mails to his family, Westhusing seemed especially upset by one conclusion he had reached: that traditional military values such as duty, honor and country had been replaced by profit motives in Iraq, where the U.S. had come to rely heavily on contractors for jobs once done by the military.... In his 352-page dissertation, Westhusing discussed the ethics of war, focusing on examples of military honor from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to the Israeli army. It is a dense, searching and sometimes personal effort to define what, exactly, constitutes virtuous conduct in the context of the modern U.S. military. "Born to be a warrior, I desire these answers not just for philosophical reasons, but for self-knowledge," he wrote in the opening pages.... In January, Westhusing began work on what the Pentagon considered the most important mission in Iraq: training Iraqi forces to take over security duties from U.S. troops. Westhusing's task was to oversee a private security company, Virginia-based USIS, which had contracts worth $79 million to train a corps of Iraqi police to conduct special operations. In March, Gen. David Petraeus, commanding officer of the Iraqi training mission, praised Westhusing's performance, saying he had exceeded "lofty expectations." "Thanks much, sir, but we can do much better and will," Westhusing wrote back, according to a copy of the Army investigation of his death that was obtained by The Times. In April, his mood seemed to have darkened. He worried over delays in training one of the police battalions. Then, in May, Westhusing received an anonymous four-page letter that contained detailed allegations of wrongdoing by USIS. The writer accused USIS of deliberately shorting the government on the number of trainers to increase its profit margin. More seriously, the writer detailed two incidents in which USIS contractors allegedly had witnessed or participated in the killing of Iraqis. A USIS contractor accompanied Iraqi police trainees during the assault on Fallouja last November and later boasted about the number of insurgents he had killed, the letter says. Private security contractors are not allowed to conduct offensive operations. In a second incident, the letter says, a USIS employee saw Iraqi police trainees kill two innocent Iraqi civilians, then covered it up. A USIS manager "did not want it reported because he thought it would put his contract at risk." Westhusing reported the allegations to his superiors but told one of them, Gen. Joseph Fil, that he believed USIS was complying with the terms of its contract. U.S. officials investigated and found "no contractual violations," an Army spokesman said. Bill Winter, a USIS spokesman, said the investigation "found these allegations to be unfounded." However, several U.S. officials said inquiries on USIS were ongoing. One U.S. military official, who, like others, requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case, said the inquiries had turned up problems, but nothing to support the more serious charges of human rights violations.... The letter shook Westhusing, who felt personally implicated by accusations that he was too friendly with USIS management, according to an e-mail in the report.... The colonel began to complain to colleagues about "his dislike of the contractors," who, he said, "were paid too much money by the government," according to one captain.... Most of the [suicide] letter is a wrenching account of a struggle for honor in a strange land. "I cannot support a msn [mission] that leads to corruption, human rights abuse and liars. I am sullied," it says. "I came to serve honorably and feel dishonored. "Death before being dishonored any more." A psychologist reviewed Westhusing's e-mails and interviewed colleagues. She concluded that the anonymous letter had been the "most difficult and probably most painful stressor." She said that Westhusing had placed too much pressure on himself to succeed and that he was unusually rigid in his thinking. Westhusing struggled with the idea that monetary values could outweigh moral ones in war. This, she said, was a flaw. "Despite his intelligence, his ability to grasp the idea that profit is an important goal for people working in the private sector was surprisingly limited," wrote Lt. Col. Lisa Breitenbach. "He could not shift his mind-set from the military notion of completing a mission irrespective of cost, nor could he change his belief that doing the right thing because it was the right thing to do should be the sole motivator for businesses."
