Tucson, AZ

Andrew and I went to Tucson, AZ for 4 days in March 2006. Andrew’s Friends were getting married, and we used it as a mini vacation. They were nice enough to send us a guide to Tucson, so this travelogue is dedicated to them.
Bring sunscreen, a sun hat, sunglasses and gallons of water. You will get dehydrated. Also remember to pack warm layers. Tucson in March is cold at night, and during our stay, colder and rainier than normal.

We stayed at:
Crossland Economy Studios Tucson - Butterfield Drive
www.crosslandstudios.com/
4800 S. Butterfield Dr.

It was small (we got a room with 1 double bed) but convenient. The wireless was cheap, $4 for our whole stay, and so was the hotel. It ran about $50 a night. And you could walk to Waffle House! (or Denny’s)

Where to go:
Sonora Desert Museum
www.desertmuseum.org/
520-883-2702
2021 N. Kinney Road

It is absolutely beautiful, and worth the visit. It is an indoor/outdoor zoo/garden/museum, so be prepared for weather. June – August admission is $9 for Adults and $2 for Kids 6-12. September – May admission is $12 for Adults and $4 for Kids 6-12. Children 5 and under are free!. If you go with 3 or more people, consider buying a membership. General membership is $50, and that includes two cards for unlimited annual admission for members and their children under ages 17 as well as 3 guest passes. So, for $50 you can get 5 adults and all your kids admitted to the museum.

Where to eat:

Yoshimatsu Healthy Japanese Food
2660 N. Campbell Avenue
(520) 320-1574
This place was recommended by locals, and a particular fave of mine. It was inexpensive, no MSG and delicious! They have a vegetarian menu and a regular menu. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to your table. They also sell things like Pocky and other Japanese treats.

La Parilla Suiza
5602 E. Speedway Blvd.,
520-747-4838

This was a delicious Mexican restaurant. This is a pricier restaurant ($10 – 20 per entrée), but they have a varied menu and the food is delicious. The waiter was a doll and we managed to escape before the mariachi band began to play. MAKE RESVERATIONS! It was packed the first time we tried. We tried again, made reservations, and were escorted through the hordes to our table with minimal waiting.

Frank’s Restaurant
3843 E. Pima Street
520-881-2710
Located in a purple building with Grateful Dead bears, this is a quintessential greasy spoon. Too greasy for my crappy stomach, but everyone else seemed to like it. They’ve got $1.50 breakfast special weekdays until 9am. This place turns into Francisco’s Mexican restaurant at night.

Waffle House
www.wafflehouse.com/default.asp
3565 E Irvington
(520) 790-8630

What can I say? I loves the Waffle house! If you are daring, try hash browns scattered all the way.
