All Souls 2007 costume plan

finishing up my costume for the All Souls Procession this coming weekend. I didn't have time to make anything from scratch this year, so it's a mish-mosh of stuff from previous years with a few new things thrown in. I made the sleeves from scraps (still have to finish the right one). The skirt is a hoop skirt I made 2 years ago (shown here without the hoop, I have to make a new one). The bones and beads are from the train skirt I made last year, along with the belt and beads (under the corset top) made for the same costume. It's like the Frankenstein costume of All Souls past. ;)

working out my makeup for the All Souls Procession this coming weekend. The dots will be rhinestones. Hopefully I can execute it like the sketch. I never can seem to just do a skull. I try every year and I end up with something not a skull. I don't know what my innate aversion is to that. And no matter what I do it always seems to come out Asian-looking. I'm starting to just resign to it. :)

...before embracing radical self-expression, first learn how to actually express. ;) I saw the picture on the left today and was instantly reminded of the picture on the right. They were begging to be paired. for those of you who are missing the joke: the sign has only 7 words and 2 of them are misspelled. nice. yeah, uh "nobody" is one word, really. and that handy apostrophe is for contracting 2 separate words. So, you know, that's supposed to be "you're", as in "you" + "are". As opposed to the sign that says "your'e", which I guess would be the word "your" + "educationally-deficient-signmaker". Of course this is ignoring the larger issue that it shouldn't be "you're" at all, but rather "your" which denotes possession. As in "your name". *sigh*

{ full suit } Concept sketch for flight suit reconstruction (click or "view image" for larger size). My goal was to keep all the functionality of the jumpsuit, while changing the structure as much as possible. I wanted to avoid the typical I-found-an-industrial-suit look, so I was aiming more for a pit crew meets Tank Girl meets psycho cheerleader vibe. More info on my blog here: http://people.tribe.net/msdynomite/blog/d64539f0-1b77-49d5-839b-62fd8f96ab01 details: Sleeves and and legs detach to allow for all-weather wear. Extra pockets added, plus D-rings for more storage. Belt added to visually extend the front pockets, forming a faux-vest. Rear pockets added to the back for more functionality and visual interest. Matching arm warmers and over-the-knee socks. The back graphic is just a place holder. I haven't yet designed it, but it will probably be a combination of silkscreen and embroidery. Will be mixing as many different fabrics as possible within the color scheme.

{ sketch + final } Nighttime playa costume for 05. Tan & black ultrasuede jumpsuit with belt, jacket and bootcovers (both lined to match jumpsuit). Didn't get a chance to make the hat, but it's on the to-do list. Original designs, self-drafted patterns, about 60hrs of labor total.
