This weekend was crazy! Friday Bonnie and I drove up to Tahoe for Allie and Kevin's wedding ceremony. I'm so glad I had Bonnie to keep me company. And she's going to be our Wedding Coordinator too! I totally had forgotten she was an event planner. Score!

After getting into Tahoe at 11pm we all headed out to the Casinos. Ok, Mont Bleu sucked! There was hardly anyone there and Club Blu had awful music. But I did win $20 on the Black Jack Tables.

So while at Club Blu, Kerry and I all of a sudden got a hankering to get tattoos. Kerry, Monica and I traipsed off to Bill's Casino where they have a tattoo parlor, but they had closed at midnight and it was now 12:30. Oh well. So we continued on to Harrah's where we ran into Kevin and the guys. We called Allie and Bonnie and they met us there too. They had this DJ playing in the casino and he was SOOOOO fucking fun! We danced like crazy and I went hoarse for yelling. There were a lot of brides and bachelorettes there too.

After leaving the casinos, all of us, sans Allie and Kevin, went in search for a diner. We ended up at Denny's where I ate something I soon regretted. We finally made it back to the condo around 5am, slept for 3 or 4 hours and it was time to get ready.

Allie looked gorgeous and I learned that I can make a veil in less than 5 minutes.

Oh and Allie, if you read this, I need all of the pictures and video from the wedding so I can make you two a little surprise!

Ok, so I redesigned my wedding dress. I drew of a sketch of it to post on a wedding related forum I'm on. I was IMing my best friend and told her about the redesign and sent her the file. Well, the following day she said that her boss wanted to hire me to do some consulting work for his firm just because of this drawing (which was seriously just a quick 5-min. sketch. My best friend is a paralegal for Patent Law Firm so they need someone to do the patent drawings for them. Now I don't need to get a part-time job because I can do this at home. Oh, and did I mention that they already sent me my first job before I had even sent them a resume and samples? And I will be getting $50/page and this first job is 5 pages!

The Northern Rockies Gray Wolf was delisted from Federal Protection by the Bush Administration. Apparently 1,500 total animals in 3 states - Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana is too many. In 88% of Wyoming they can be shot on site regardless.

So my question is this. What the fuck is the purpose of the Endangered Species Act if the animals are just brought back to it immediately after their taken off of it?

Ranchers are reimbursed for any lost livestock to wolves, and elk herds are healthier and hunters are just as successful now as they were before the wolves were reintroduced.

It makes me sad the ignorance of so many members of the human race.

Yep, I'm thinking of torturing myself and going to Law School. I just need to find a good school, that's local and accredited by the ABA.

I was thinking of becoming a vet and had started taking courses. Then I looked further into and realized a few things:
A) It's nearly impossible to get into and I just don't have the undergrad grades to pull it off
B) It's incredibly expensive and the course load is insane, which means I couldn't offset the cost by working even part time
C) After graduation I wouldn't be getting paid much more than I am now but I'd have $120k in debt to pay off...um no thank you.

I would love to be a vet, don't get me wrong, but I also want to be able to make a good living and not have to worry about paying off debt for the rest of my life. At least with being a lawyer I'll be making a substantial amount more so the school loan payments won't hurt nearly as much and I'll have an opportunity to create change in this wacky world.

Wedding "rituals"

Ok, I admit, I want to do all those typical "wedding" things even though I have no intention on utilizing any of them. Like bridal expos. I have pretty much everything figured out, but I still want to go to one just so I can experience it. Kind of like a rite of passage.

Well, this weekend I went dress "shopping" with Carly. It just so happens that, Allie, one of my bridesmaids was getting her wedding dress fitted at the exact same time at the exact same store as Carly and I. Her wedding dress is GORGEOUS btw. But it was such an awesome surprise to see her walking into the store as I'm waiting for Carly.

As for the dresses....I only tried on three. I was mostly just looking at styles. The first two were....ok. They were just poofy white dresses. Then I put on this one dress....OH MY GOD! It was gorgeous and fit me like a glove. It was a dark ivory with tons of embroidery and beading. That's the dress in the picture.

But alas, I don't want a white or ivory dress....I want COLOR! Plus the beading is all scratchy under the arms. But it's good to see what shape looked best on me.

That I lost my phone? It's somewhere around. I suspect Jack(ass) has something to do with it's whereabouts as he likes to knock EVERYTHING onto the floor and then push it under furniture. I just don't know where it is and haven't had much time to look for it. Plus it's on silent, so I can't just call it to find it.

So if you're trying to call me, call my home phone and leave a message if noone answers as we no longer have caller ID (cutting costs everywhere we can). PM me if you need my home number.

SF Art Institute deems bludgeoning animals to death as "artistic expression."

From In Defense of Animals:

Walk into the Walter and McBean Galleries in San Francisco's posh Russian Hill neighborhood, and you may be shocked to see what passes for contemporary "art" these days. Six televisions display video images of six different animals -- a doe, a goat, a horse, an ox, a pig, and a sheep -- being bludgeoned to death with a large sledgehammer by "artist" Adel Abdessemed of Paris. Entitled "Don't Trust Me," this sick exhibit is Abdessemed's and the Institute's self-serving attempt to pass off the brutal abuse and killing of animals as legitimate artistic creation.
What such "artists" and their patrons overlook is that animals are living beings who feel and suffer just like we humans -- and we are no more justified in taking their lives at will than we have the right to kill another person. Such abuse of animals may elicit horror and disgust in viewers, but that does not qualify it as art. Far from it -- in fact, "Don't Trust Me" represents the very worst impulses of the human imagination.
It takes no artistic talent or ability to kill animals, and Abdessemed should have never been given a venue for his sickening "work" in the first place. To their great discredit, the San Francisco Art Institute agreed to sponsor this exhibit, lending it an air of credibility, but what makes matters worse are the obscene rationalizations this venerable institution of learning and culture offers in defense of the sleazy snuff films. These include pedantic claims that such killings "regularly take place...in the real world, on a regular basis," and that the installation "(makes) typical moral and cultural constraints seem beside the point."
Such statements betray not only a lack of compassion and basic human decency, but also a fundamental confusion of true artistic creation with the destruction of life. Abdessemed's work is of no artistic value, and rather than raise people's consciousness about the cruelties committed against animals every day, it will encourage them to accept animal abuse as a way of gaining attention and notoriety.
To call someone who murders animals an "artist" is an insult to every real artist who refuses to rely on violence and shallow, sensationalistic gimmicks to express his or her vision. While the work of such murderers will surely not endure, their antics may encourage and incite others to torture and kill animals, so it is crucial that people of conscience voice our outrage over this monstrous display of cruelty.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is utterly disgusting that this person has been labeled an "artist." You can go to this link and let the SF Art Institute know how you feel: http://ga0.org/campaign/sfai/wiswx364fmwdxj8?

I have programs that I want to run (Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Illustrator CS3, AutoCAD), but I don't have enough RAM to even load them. Also, Tom and I are always battling over getting on the computer. I'd keep the desktop for general use, and use the laptop for the big programs that I want to use.

for arson....
We have a new neighbor down the street. Our first run in with him was when Tom got home from work. There is a daycare two doors down and between 4 and 5pm there are lots of small children walking to their cars with parents. There are no sidewalks on our street, so they are usually walking along the side of the street. Well, Tom was getting out of his truck and he hears a car peeling out. He looks behind him to see a minivan speeding down our street. He yells at the guy to slow down. The guy stops his car and was like "oh sorry dude, I won't do that again." Tom was pretty sure the guy was drunk.
Well a couple days later on a walk with the dogs we quickly realized where he lives. Just around the corner there's a house with TONS of trash in the front yard. I mean, TONS. See this picture? This isn't his house, his is MUCH worse. Someone even wrote "CLEAN UP THE SHIT" on some of the trash. There's so much trash it overflows across the sidewalk into the gutter. I've called the county code enforcement 3 times already and nothing is picked up yet.
I might not live in the best neighborhood, but everyone takes care of their property. This is TOTALLY unacceptable. I'm starting to have fantasies of lighting the garbage on fire.

This was not how my weekend was supposed to go!

I was supposed to be going out tonight with Tom to go see his old band play. We were kid free for the weekend.
So what happens instead? I go into emergency surgery last night because I have appendicitis. How fun is that?
And what am I most worried about? That I have a presentation to finish up by Tuesday and now I can't got to work for a week. Fan-fucking-tastic.

I saved a dog's life today. Sanity, you should appreciate this. We were just taking Tom's son back to his mom's. Totally seemed like your average day. We're cruising along at 75mph on Hwy 780 when I spot a medium sized black dog on the shoulder. I tell Tom to pull over. As he's backing up along the shoulder I'm praying that this dog is friendly and that she doesn't run onto the freeway where cars are zooming past. She's a momma. She just had babies and we can't find them. She's super friendly and VERY sweet. We had Tom's pickup so he wrapped her up in his sweatshirt, picked her up and she rode on his lap while I drove to the next off ramp. We stopped at a shopping center where I ran into to get a collar, a leash, a small bowl and a bottle of water. She had no collar or tags. We called 911, which apparently several other people did, but they decided to just leave her on the freeway to get hit. They put us in touch with Vallejo Humane who told us they couldn't take her because it was a Sunday. CRAP!

We can't take her home because our two mutts aren't real fond of other dogs. So then we called Solano Animal Control...same deal, they can't take her. We didn't want to take her to Contra Costa, which we knew took in animals on Sunday because they only give dogs 3 days to be found by owners and then 3 days to be adopted before they are put down. At least with the Solano Shelter I knew they will keep dogs until they get adopted, but of course, that's not an option.

So we finally got a hold of Benicia Humane, who gladly said they'd take her even though they were closed for the day. We met a police officer at the shelter and put her in a kennel. He obviously had a soft heart for dogs (he was a K-9 unit) and said he'd go back to where we found her and search more for her puppies.

She was such a sweet dog. As we were driving she looked up at Tom, gave him a lick and then snuggled into his chest. She just couldn't get close enough to him. In just the 15 minutes we had her we were already getting attached. We knew we couldn't take her though. We can't afford any more animals. Well, we could if we didn't care what quality of food we fed them, but that's not an option in our household.

So if anyone is interested in a medium 35lb lab mix with a heart of gold, I know where you can find her.

I've wanted to go to Santorini Greece for a long time. Tom hasn't been so keen on it. For our honeymoon he was thinking we should go to Mexico. I wanted to go somewhere further. My mom is getting us our plane tickets from her Frequent Flyer Miles (she's got an obscene amount like 400K, which I don't envy because traveling as much as she does to not so great places for work would kill me). Why not take full advantage of them? Well, Giada's got a show on Food Network all about Santorini. Now Tom wants to go. I found a nice "hostel" with private rooms for $31/night. We are so on it!!!

I LOVE thunder!!! Lightning is even better, but I'll live with just thunder. One of my coworkers and I was discussing how we wished this storm would bring some. And it did!!! A full 34 seconds straight. That was the longest thunder "clap" I've ever heard. It just rumbled on and on and on.

You know me. I have a cousin, Ron Brinkerhoff, who has worked with Ron Howard, who directed Apollo 13, which Kevin Bacon was in.

LOL.

There goes the neighborhood....

There are some neighborhoods that you just don't fuck with. Apparently, my parent's neighborhood is one of them.

I found out yesterday that in the last 2 months there have been multiple shootings involving two specific rental properties in their neighborhood. Now previously there was another rental property two doors down from my parent's house where the kid was selling drugs (crack, not pot) from. So the neighborhood banded together and started a lawsuit against the owner for allowing those people to live there. Needless to say they got evicted because the owner didn't want to lose the house.

Now the same thing is happening with these two other rentals. The neighborhood is NOT going to allow thugs to live there and destroy it. Everyone there is politically active in the community and they all know each other. Wrong neighborhood to fuck with.

Wedding Gift Peeves

So a friend of mine very recently got married. I still need to get her a gift. She registered at two places, one being more posh and the other more run-of-the-mill. So I went to check them both out and I couldn't believe it! There is not a single item on either list under $130. She had two different shower curtains on there that were both $149 each. $149 for shower curtains?! You've got to be kidding me.

With our two new vehicle purchases and saving up for my own wedding, I can't really afford anything on her registry right now.

My registry will have a wide range of prices to suit everyone. Most of the prices will be under the $50 mark. I don't need the most expensive of anything.

And if you really can't afford anything, I totally won't be butt hurt. Just because I'm getting married doesn't mean people should feel obligated to get us anything. It's really not anyone else's responsibility to buy us stuff that we need just because we're getting married.

I just got news yesterday that another company has gone belly up due to the housing slump. It was the company where I got my start. I interned for them all through college and worked for them briefly after college. Friday was their last day and no one there has a backup job. I heard from a coworker who I used to work with there also.
