Why I dance....

When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole, that is why I dance. --Hans Bos

about me
I'm a professional Egyptian-style soloist and full-time bellydance teacher. For three years, I directed my own troupe "The Dark Flower Gypsies", am a co-founder of "Troupe Mahasin", and belonged to Lansing's Habibi Dancers. I enjoy dancing with live musicians, as I have a degree in music myself and love the communication with musicians that happens during live performance. I've studied and danced professionally in Egypt and Morocco, and can't wait for my next trip to the Middle East to continue learning about this art form in its homeland. My specialties are drum solos, veil, zills, double sword, folkloric women's dance styles, and comedic dance routines. My goal in dance is for the audience to laugh, have a good time, to get the "feeling" of the music, and to be thoroughly entertained.

Am finished with most classes now, which is fortuitous as I've done Something Unfortunate to my foot. I wish I could say I did it whilst performing for some immensely wealthy head of state, but the sad truth is I fell down a flight of stairs. While wearing a sari. Oh, my sauve-itude knows NO BOUNDS. :) Performances are going well, though, and I'm looking forward to the shipment of a couple new costumes I've just ordered.

Well, there's been a lot going on here. Sorry I've not been posting, I've not been on the boards very much, not responded to messages... it's been a painful week in a lot of ways, and a difficult month in general. Have been learning a lot recently; not as much about bellydancing, but more about life and death, and the fact that I'm stronger than I thought I was. :}

Time to go dance, it makes me feel better. Practicing sword, cane, and candles right now... getting geared up for whatever's ... read more

Well, it's been a while since I've posted - RL caught up with me a bit. Memorial Day weekend was wonderful as always, but with the addition of my grandmother's funeral it was a very emotional and exhausting weekend. :) I'm glad to be done with it, it's been looming over my head since March (when she passed). I think she would have been very gratified by the whole event.

Since then, I've been finishing up my teaching schedule for Spring, gently refusing other requests to teach this summer s... read more
